FYI, Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters is now streaming on Netflix (although it's just titled "Godzilla Part 1" for some reason)

    It's two movies I guess.

Though this first one might as well be called "Humans are dumb we barely see Godzilla it's been like 50 minutes god damn it"

I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.

    THREE movies, I hear.

    Which is pretty fucking padding

Yeah I just watched it. Still going with my assumption that the creator was getting no traction with his anime concept so he stuck Godzilla into it.
I'd hoped when a couple other classic Godzilla monsters showed up in the opening montage we'd see more of em and then all you get is generic melty dragon things.

More of those CG anime studios need to be taking cues from the folks who do the new Guilt Gear games, or the folks who did Houseki no Kuni

Those are the two studios I can think of right now that do full CG anime which actually look good in practice

This was OK. Not bad, not good. Just OK. I love the concept! And that final reveal
that the real Godzilla was there all along
    was *chef’s kiss*

I got used to the animation pretty quick, honestly. The problem is that the art direction is kinda same-y.

The entire post title sequence has nothing to do with Godzilla it's 15 minutes long then it cuts to the word Godzilla and I was like "Oooh no"

It was alright, the animation wasn’t great but I liked some of the concepts
the alien invaders come to defeat/control godzilla get punked too and have to leave with the humans was neat. Going to call it now, the second bigger godzilla isn’t the final godzilla, and it will turn out godzilla is the earth or some nonsense. I too am a little sad it seems to be a world of godzilla spins offs instead of like an ecosystem is different Kaiju species

I'm bringing this thread back from the dead because a) Pacific Rim sequel is out (though I haven't seen it yet) and b) I just found out I could watch all the Showa-era Godzilla and Gamera films online through my local library, so I watched Destroy All Monsters! yesterday. It's bad??? Like, dang. I thought this was one of the highlights of the Showa era but aside from the climactic throwdown at Mt. Fuji and the destruction of Tokyo, it was exceptionally goofy. Half the monsters didn't even do anything!!!

Anyway, when do you think we'll hear something about Godzilla 2? I was doing some digging around and found some leaked, maybe fake but who knows, 3D images of a King Ghidorah model. Looked kinda cool if you want to go track it down.

Destroy All Monsters did have a bit of "let's squeeze every single monster suit we can in even if there's no time for them to do anything". My favorite is Varan who appears once in the last minute or so of the movie just to fly away.

Definitely one of my favorites though, plenty of good monster rampage scenes and the big pile on King Ghidorah is excellent.

Ghidorah getting curb-stomped in the most brutal fashion is excellent, you're right

Not sure why Kumonga and Mothra decide to shower everyone with jizz afterwards but what do I know

After 2021, we're thinking of a potential strategy that [releases] Godzilla movies uninterrupted at a rate of every 2 years, although there is a preference for a yearly pace as well. The future of the series and its forwarding developments are very conscious of the method of "shared universe". Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah, etc. could all share a single world view much like a Marvel movie where Iron Man and the Hulk can crossover with each other.

...Shin Godzilla was a huge hit, but instead of thinking of doing the obvious idea of making a Shin Godzilla 2, instead think about a world that can be used for a long time. I'd rather make a World of Godzilla.

Isn’t that how the films operated already......?

  • Options
    BlankZoeBlankZoe Registered User regular
    Yes and no

Rodan, Mothra and the others all came from their own movies but were mostly rebooted when they joined the Godzilla franchise

And Mothra's later solo franchise was standalone from the Godzilla stuff

I'm assuming this means they're gonna try and do other monster movies again (ie a Mothra flick, a Rodan flick, etc.) which I am very down for

Yeah I knew all that, guess I still considered vaguely similar to how a shared universe operates anyway

Definitely makes sense that they're not gonna directly follow up on Shin, the ending didn't really leave a lot of room for a sequel that didn't immediately diminish a lot of the threat.

Shin Godzilla was one of the most, well, monstrous versions I have ever seen. I am sure the other monsters would be equally terrifying.

Yeah, I’ve looked that place up before. The way it works is you buy six tickets for like $40, each ticket is good for one game a few minutes long, and you can only use certain tickets on certain games. Pretty expensive for an arcade.
