Yeah, I was thinking similar, but it looks like it's actually more just based around the archaic meaning of the word drift as "to drive" (which comes from Dutch, it appears)
Etymonline lists the specific meaning we're discussing as dating to the 1520s, but it doesn't cite that, so the earliest I could readily find was the Hamlet quote

All right, time to rant about bras.
I've posted this link before and I'll happily do so again. Reeaaaaaaad it. Believe in it.
The U.S. in particular sucks for bras. Really sucks. I mean it. Even if you can find larger cup sizes they tend to fit weirdly. The few places that don't suck, like Nordstrom and select boutiques, tend to import their bras. Nordstrom stocks a lot of UK brands and if you want a country-wide place to go, Nordstrom's is it, pretty much.
The UK is perhaps the only country in the world to really have its shit together re. bras and I'm not just saying that because I'm British, I swear. Even then it's hard to find a wide range of sizes on the high street and places like M&S still measure you incorrectly.
Anyway, the first thing to understand is that a D cup is actually pretty fucking small, although here I note that cup size is dependent upon your frame. If you're slender or have an athletic frame a D-cup's going to look considerably bigger on you than on a larger, less athletic frame.
This isn't boasting, or bragging. Every time I try and spread this information around there's someone who feels that claiming to be a D+ cup size is claiming to have enormous boobs and definitely NOT them and they end up sizing up in the band instead and ending up with an uncomfortably fitting bra and shit, SO many people in the U.S. (and elsewhere, I assume) are wearing completely the wrong size bra.
A D cup means that if you take your chest measurement around the fullest part of your boobs, it's just 4 inches larger than under your bust. 4 inches. It's not a lot. That doesn't mean your boobs are projecting 4 inches forward - that's around the whole chest.
Your favourite 'DD!!!' porn star is probably at least a G/H cup, to be honest.
Anyway, wearing a good bra is important! Yes, there was a French study that showed that wearing no bra was better for you but it focused only on people aged 18-35, and the author of the study himself has said that it's only evidence that people should not necessarily start wearing bras; a person accustomed to wearing a bra is not likely to benefit from suddenly ditching it. I also read elsewhere that the study largely focused on smaller-framed, smaller-boobed people.
A well-fitting bra is not uncomfortable. Personally I feel more comfortable wearing a bra than not wearing one.
U.S. companies are shit and I've not found anything proving otherwise. Yes, I've been getting those adverts for Third Love on Facebook, too. They're pretty convincing. But they don't stock anything above an E cup and that instantly makes me suspicious; they also have a sucky variety and at least one of my friends has had to try on at least three of their bras, even after consulting them over video. HMM.
But D+ bras are sooo uggggly and expensive. NO! There's DOZENS of brands that sell beautiful and colorful D+ bras out there! Let me point you right now to my favourite site, brastop.com. (NSFW for obvious reasons). They also have regular sales. I just bought 4 bras for $140 including a full-priced sports bra, not bad!
If you're not convinced of your size, Nordstrom has free returns! They're a lot pricier than brastop and similar sites but you can at least try on several sizes until you find what fits.
This post inspired by yet another friend swearing they're not a D+ cup and going with Third Love despite my advice.

I still order my bras from M&S because when I lived there I found a line that's cheap, comfortable, and cute, and the amount of time saved by just clicking a button instead of heaving myself to a mall and trying a bunch of shit on is inconceivable.
Panache is highly regarded and it's probably one of the best known bigger bra brands, but they don't fit me quite right. They're a 'good-enough' fit, and I can see why they're highly regarded, but I personally do best with Fantasie. Luckily the subReddit linked to by that tumblr post have a lot of info on what bra brand might be best for your shape. A good bra site, too, will allow you to filter by bra style.
However, the good brands are reasonably consistent with sizes, so if something's mostly right, your size is probably right, you probably just want a different style bra. I've tried 5-6 well-reviewed brands in my size and they all do the job in a pinch. The only well-reviewed brand where I was like 'WTF is this garbage' was Curvy Kate, so I'm most wary of recommending that, but perhaps it was just the one bra of theirs I tried that was odd.

Alternatively I have a very difficult time finding bras because the fashion industry seems to think women my size all want massively padded bras. That used to make me so insecure, fuck you fashion industry!

Since cup size is relative to your band size, if you have a small band size, the difference is going to be more marked. A 4" difference on a slender 28" frame is going to look a lot larger than on a plus-size 38" frame.
If you're broader and taller, too, that's also going to make a difference in appearance.
