Despite his condition and age, Hawking is one of those people I had never considered could actually die. He was such a permanent fixture of popular culture and scientific discourse that it was easy to forget that he wouldn't be around forever.

Someone find a Hawking hole so we can go back and save him.

I really only knew of his because of his various appearances on TV shows, by all the same I feel this loss. It sucks.

We've lost one of the great minds of our age. He will be sorely missed.

Above and beyond being a very important intellect, and all his work promoting and popularizing science, he seemed like a genuinely good dude.

he lived a long, incredible life, and certainly lived longer than anyone ever dared expect, and this still feels like a huge loss to all.

I took some drafting classes from a guy who worked as an engineer at Hanford. They were doing some crazy high end physics experiments deep deep under the earth and Professor Hawking visited once. They had to design a custom clean room entry vehicle for him, and when it arrived on the track it was washed down by a couple of the scientists there, and apparently he jokingly made some dirty comments about getting it all soapy and wet.

I like that he was one of the most incredible minds humanity ever produced and was still capable of being a light-hearted horndog once in a while.

Stephen Hawking was not afraid to let people know he didn't like them. He ran over Prince Charles (well, his feet I think), and expressed regret at not being able to do the same to Margaret Thatcher. I love that so much.

    Also this:

    Yeah that’s my favorite part.

Just this dirty Speak-And-Spell sounding voice coming from inside this weird high tech pod, slowly uttering “mmmmmm. Yeah. Baby. Get. It. Nice. And. Soapy. For. Me.”

One of my profs in my undergrad was a grad student of Stephen Hawking's, and was also his roommate. He was a pretty eccentric dude (my prof, not Hawking).

hawking was part of my first hard introduction into astrophysics as a kid (I was, like, maybe 9 or something at the time?)

like, I've known about him as long as I've known about theories of the duality of matter/dark matter and black holes and shit

dude was a fundamental influence for one of my lifetime interests

gonna have a drink in his honor when I next imbibe

Also just saw a comment that Hawkings was born on the 300th anniversary of Galileo’s death and today, 3.14, pi day, is also Einstein’s birthday.

Just got linked to his interview with John Oliver, and it's brilliant:

    5:35 is particularly brutal.

I don't know why he stuck with science instead of doing comedy full time.
