A question concerning 360 HD-DVD drive region encoding

I'm curious: is the Region Encoding for the HD-DVD drive encoded in the drive itself, or is that part of the console? Could you, for example, connect a HD-DVD drive purchased in the US to a UK/EUR 360 and watch Region 1 HD-DVDs?

As far as I remember HD-DVD's in particular have no region encoding lockout. The drives themselves would probably have the coding though for future use.

Ah yes, you appear to be correct there. Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, says "There is no Region Coding in the existing HD DVD specification, which means that titles from any country can be played in players in any other country." Whoo.
