Well damn, it looks like there's a lot of smoke to the VR rumors. They've been teasing a "W/ARE" headset thingy in their ARG, and Sean Murray tweeted out "Morpheus" (the dev name for the PSVR) in hex code before deleting it. The W/ARE logo also appears in the teaser trailer.

Summer can't come soon enough! It's kind of amazing that all of that marketing may be leading them to spend lots of money on making an enormous VR walking simulator, but god damn that is right up my alley.

I haven't played this game since just after launch. I keep falling victim to the same problem as with Minecraft, and XCOM 2 mods, and Skyrim/Fallout mods: "Ooooh, that's a nice update. I'd like to play with those toys. But...what if the next update is even cooler? I should probably wait and see."

That said...*looks over various post-launch updates*...I'd like to play with these toys.

Everytime I go back I hit the same wall. I start, have fun then when I start wanting a ship with more slots you have to grind money. Even if you find a crashed ship that's a huge upgrade you have to pay into the upgrade slot by slot. The money part of NMS is a bit grindy and feels like you can't luck into better stuff.

Following the story basically just dumped a whole "okay now build a base" chain on me, so there was no need to stop and do that on my own. It may have even given me some stuff for free (not sure since I haven't tried it from scratch).

And now that I'm building a base, my enjoyment of the game has skyrocketed. There's now short-term, immediate goals I can reach, which gives all my efforts real weight. Also the planet they sent me to for the base is really colorful and pretty. It has mild toxic rain, but I have a toxic suppressor module installed, so I have a pretty easy time exploring at leisure. Tons of caves, too.

I can advance the story farther now if I want, but I do not want. I want to keep doing these base quest chains instead, getting more specialists, etc. One current quest requires me to add Haz-mat Gauntlets to my exosuit, which seems like a great idea. Only I'm out of technology slots. I guess I could ditch my heat/cold suppressor module for now and add it back later? I went wandering around to a dozen or two of those question mark locales, but none of them offered an exosuit upgrade. I got quite a few early on, but they've just stopped showing up for quite awhile. I'm really needing the extra inventory space with the increasing complexity of the crafting.

Got better at dogfighting, too. Thanks for the advice! This is definitely a game where enjoyment ramps up as your personal competence builds.

I think if you build a... beacon? whatever the thing is that lets you run a scan (fake edit: signal booster), you can use it to look for a drop pod. I think there are some sort of limitations on it if you've already found a bunch, but if you're desperate for additional suit slots it's worth a shot.

Actual multiplayer confirmed by Murray for NEXT update on Inside XBox. July 24 release.

Co-op described as "more Battlestar Galactica" and "intense" compared to normal game. PvP pirating also confirmed.

XB1 box art strongly hints at ringed planets.

I hope there's more to the big update than multiplayer. That doesn't really do anything for me... Fingers crossed there will be an option to opt out of multiplayer entirely. The way he describes MP is interesting, though. If it's as he says, that has to mean space and planetside are being revamped with more interesting things to do/enemies to fight.

I love the game as it is now, but just adding MP to it isn't going to make it suddenly chaotic and wacky.

Considering multiplayer was literally nonexistent in the original game (in the actual software, if not in the game's press statements), I'd be really surprised if there wasn't an in-game switch simply to flip.

So this is definitely the game they would've released had their offices not flooded a year before release on the PlayStation. I'm guessing they had to start over from scratch developing the game which is why we were given something so barebones. That said I liked the game a lot at release so I'm kinda a huge fanboy when it comes to defending the game

At a AAA studio they would have charged people $20-$30 for each of the free updates that they've released so far.

I know! It;s like a complete overhaul of the mechanics whilst keeping the core dfeeling the same. Honestly, most AAA studios would've just released it and left it to die.

An AAA studio wouldn't have said, "Oh yeah, we have multiplayer! But the universe is so big, you know...things..." And then not had multiplayer at all. I'm trying, but I can't think of a case where a major publisher would've claimed there was a core function in the game, with the hope that the players just...wouldn't notice its absence, I suppose. At a certain point, someone would've figured out that Sean Murray should not have been allowed to talk to anyone.

(The universe wasn't that big either. It's big, but it's no Space Engine.)

Peter Molyneux was pretty close to that.

True. Though "persistence for every individual blade of grass" still isn't at the level of core game design as "playing with other people." I blame lack of landscaping middleware from Nvidia (where is LawnWorks?), but multiplayer? Pretty big deal in gaming, pretty normal thing to have even. It's even going to be in the game two years later.

I still don't really understand why people like multiplayer unless it's only with people you know, and totally exclusionary of PvP options.

But then again I've really always preferred single player or couch co-op as the only two options for a game?

If all of this had been included at launch, this game would have been a serious goty contender. Instead any new games from the developer will be viewed with severe skepticism, and given how front loaded game sales are that could be disastrous. I swore them off for good after the game launched but given the amount of care and polish they have put into the game since I will probably buy their next game new. Not at launch price, but on sale is a real possibility.

Oh, they had backups, they didn't lose any work, it just ate into their development time quite a bit getting a new office set up, IIRC.
I can't remember whether they were insured or not, though.

Yeah I bought it digitally and am planning on coming back to it for the platinum trophy eventually. I am looking forward to playing a much more fully realized and complete game, I think it looks like a lot of fun and would actually recommend it to my friends in its current form. Unfortunately after it came out, and I was the only one who bought it, and I told them all how much of a waste of money it was at great length, I doubt I can convince them now.

So I started playing this again. Just went right back to my old file because why not. Updates can make things a little screwy but mostly it's no big deal.

Still no idea how to get enough money for a freighter. Been working on base missions, and I started the Artemis quest which has been interesting.

So, anyway I finally got a new ship! I've been using the same ship for the vast majority of my 100+ hours on this save file, so this is huge. It has less inventory than my old one but it's S Class with mad bonuses and I've never seen anything like it so I had to go for it.

As soon as I saw it i knew I had to call it "Look to Squidward"

My hype has been tempered a lot with no news of the heavily teased VR stuff, and the only info being multiplayer which I'm not suuuper interested in as of now. But it seems like they're keeping a fair amount of it under wraps until release, so we'll see what happens!

  • Big ClassyBig Classy Registered User regular
I think multiplayer was the big thing a lot of people were (rightfully) complaining about when it came to the games initial release way back then so there focusing on that for marketing but there's a lot more changed in this than just that.

Every update brings about big UI and mechanical changes so I would be shocked if this wasn't the same, especially since its touted as their biggest update.
