So I've been playing FE Awakening on Hard/Casual and I'm at the final map. It is not going well...
On most of my characters, say about 10, I leveled them to max in their base class then max in a master class. I had no problem with any of the previous maps, but this last map is like an entirely different game suddenly. All the enemy troops 1 shot all my guys. No one can damage Grima except Chrom and even then Chrom does around 20 damage, 34 on a critical. Sometimes Grima just instantly kills Chrom. Either way I can't kill him in one turn and then everyone dies the next so I don't see a way to win because of that.

Any advice other than grinding? I really don't want to grind, so if that is the only option I'll probably just drop the game.

Kid units are a fair bit stronger than parents. Second seal for more skills and levels makes people stronger as well. I'm surprised you can't bait anything out? On hard you're expected to be breaking the game somewhat though.

Yeah that's what I had read after googling about it. I didn't really like most of the kid units so I didn't use them at all, I just used the characters I liked best through the whole game. I only chose hard difficulty because normal felt so easy that I didn't have to think or use any tactics at all. Until this mission I felt hard was challenging but relatively fair and required me to play tactically. I enjoyed the tactical challenge but I realized I don't care at all about leveling my characters in FE (this being my first).

Is there a way to drop the difficulty after a game has started in Awakening and/or Fates? I started both of those games on Normal with permadeath, because those are the way the games are "supposed" to be played, so I wanted a true experience. But I've also discovered that a true experience is not fun for me, and losing awesome dudes makes me hate the game.

Actually, I'll probably need to restart both of them anyway, so that I don't have lost dudes.

In Fates, at least, it's possible to lower the difficulty, but not possible to raise it. But Normal is already the lowest difficulty setting, so...

Haven't found a way to switch off permadeath, though.

In Fates you can change the difficulty and permadeath settings from the world map (only down, not up).

And if it helps, permadeath is absolutely not how Fates is "supposed" to be played, it's definitely designed around Casual mode.

So today, Fire Emblem Warriors got its Awakening DLC and a big new update.

Importantly, there's now a Blessing that allows you to reset a character's level in exchange for materials specific to that character. I haven't tried it myself yet, but according to Serenes, you get a silver material for every 5 levels and a gold material for every 10 levels. So, for example, if Xander is at level 50 (or level 50-54) and you reset his levels, you'll get 10 Xander's Shields and 5 Xander's Plate Armors.

So... replay Story Chapter 20 a bunch or repeatedly dump money into a character whose materials you want?

    Anyway, trailers.

While I haven't had a chance to play it much past the landslide, I just have to let everyone know that Echoes exceeds all expectations.

Back when Echoes came out I played it through to the story's end, and then put it aside with the intent to do the Epilogue the next time I had a Fire Emblem itch. I had a lot of fun, I liked the cast a lot, the story was solid, and I loved a lot of the new/updated mechanics (mainly spending HP to activate Combat Arts instead of RNG triggered Skills, but also things like Magic costing HP, traditional Staff uses being spells (so I actually used the more exotic ones), Archers with longer range, three levels of promotion, etc.). I also loved Mila's Turnwheel, and hope something similar is present in games going forward (though keep the uses far more limited. Once or twice a level keeps you on your toes while being forgiving of the odd mistake or bad play. Twelve uses trivialises things).

On the other hand, the game misses the mark in a couple places pretty hard. While more thought has been put into the story, I think it would have benefited greatly from Rudolf being more present in the build-up to the climax. Game design wise, the individual maps hew too closely to the original. This is the big one. Mostly it means that the levels are bland or awful - both in layout and enemies present. (And dungeons, while neat, get pretty tedious with fighting the same skirmishes over and over.) There are some good battles too, but... it's the core of the game, and it's sub-par overall. They put so much into everything else, but the map design stops me from calling this a great game. (If Echoes had Conquest map-design it'd probably be my favourite in the series.)

Anyway, I've now re-engaged and started in on the Epilogue, as well as deciding to check out the DLC. The first few fights left me thinking, “ugh, and I had managed to forget about the Celica-route's boat maps...” but then you get to the last one and I had a moment of shock when I checked the map. That was a fun one, and luckily I love things in this game that screw with enemy movement, so I had four Long Bow-equipped, Entrapment capable Bow Knights able to lock down the big nasties, while Sonya used Entrap to pull in enemies for others to murder. (I have the tendency to mumble Scorpion's “Get over here!” every time she does it...)

Also for that level I actually equipped Alm with a bow for the first time, and my god, he's deadly. I know all the official art shows him with various swords, but give him a Killer Bow and he's more or less guaranteed to crit. He's also turned out to be very handy with a Long Bow, as the 2-4 range handicap (ie. unable to counter at a range of 1) gets ignored because Alm can pull out a generic sword and defend himself.

Thabes Labyrinth so far seems fun (I've gone into it a couple times, explored to the midpoint). I was spoiled on what waits at the bottom pre-release, but even knowing that, the markers on each level that are slowly telling a story are appropriately creepy. And it's nice battling opponents that yield enough silver that I can experiment more with forging.

Now a note on the DLC. First up, I bought the Cipher Companions pack. This includes two maps, which after beating you are able to recruit the four original characters from the Japan-only TCG FE0:Cipher. I believe this is the debut of those characters in anything English, and their shtick seems to be that they're traveling through various FE worlds chasing after something-or-other.

The maps themselves are reused from the main game, with different scenarios. The first one involves Emma, a young Falcon Knight who is big on training, and Randal, a who-you-calling-scruffy-lookin' Paladin. Randal had cheated the local village ruffians at dice the night before, and when he and Emma try to flee Randal is hobbled (luckily on a Supplies tile, with walls on three sides). Emma asks you to help them, and once you take care of the Archers she'll also join in. The other map involves a vampy Saint named Shade, and a sword-master Priestess named Yuzu who are trying to reunite with Emma and Randal. Shade gets possessed, and Yuzu asks you to help free her (by dealing damage without killing her). Both had potential to be fun, but they let you take your team and don't scale to your story progress, so they were both trivial to complete for me in the post game (ie. Celica can just use the Blessed Sofia's Subdue art and leave Shade at 1 HP).

As for the characters themselves, they're alright. Emma is chipper and another Falcon Knight never hurts. She comes with a Training Lance – a weak, light lance that has a Combat Art that lets you attack three times consecutively (eat your heart out, Astra). Randal is charmingly scummy and his signature lance has terrible accuracy and high crit rate. Shade I was excited about when she got the spell Freeze (like I said, I love enemy movement control) and was considering adding her into my A-team. But it has a poor accuracy, and her attack is so low that it had a relatively small range. Character wise, she's obviously sexualised in the Tharja/Camilla mold, but not obnoxiously so. Yuzu suffers from them deciding not to make female models for Dread Fighters – she doesn't seem right as a Priestess but I guess it's the only way in this game for a woman to wield a blade. She's kind of crap stat wise, compared to the others, but comes with a nice sword.

Emma and Randal have support conversations, as well as Yuzu and Shade, and they all offer passive supports to each other. The conversations, like most in the game, are cute but ultimately nothing amazing. I'd say if you do get this, it'd probably be best to play and recruit them around... the beginning of Act 4, I guess? Or maybe Act 3? It's hard to say at what point the maps would be impossibly hard to do, and at what time they become too easy. There's also a question of who to do them as, as Alm could use another Falcon Knight, but doesn't need the Paladin, and Shade would be useful for Celica but the last thing she needs is another Priestess. Conversely, Randal could be good with Celica but she already has the Pegasus sisters, and Alm has less need of another Saint (Silque, Tatiana, and sometimes Faye). The cost is around ten bucks Canadian, which is... a little excessive.

The other main pack is the Rise of the Deliverance. The name makes it sound like a coherent story, but it's actually four stand-alone maps set before the start of the story. And... they're the best designed missions in the game. They take place on existing maps, but all with interesting scenarios. For example, one tells the story of the fall of the Southern Outpost. You control Lukas, Forsyth, and Python (at preset levels/equipment) and have to defeat enemies to reach your allies in the Outpost, talk to them (after which they will “retreat” and disappear), and then fall back to the beginning tiles to escape while fighting off enemy reinforcements. Other missions include a “defend the location for 9 turns”, a “relieve an ally and escort him to safety”, and an “escape from a crypt full of terrors and mages with two units, one with a blessed lance, the other with a +40 Resisitance ring”.

They are all great levels, and I wish the main game had played like them. Beating each of them will give you an item (Fernand's Lance, Python's Bow, Clair's Lance, Clive's Lance, and Lukas' Shield) all of which are good but in no way over-powered. You also get a couple new interesting Memory Prisms, and Support Conversations for Clair with Mathilda, and Forsyth and Python with Clive and Lukas (which are all nice to have and... honestly, feel like they should have been in the base game). And now the problem: this all costs about twenty dollars CAD! The game is only fifty! It's a shame, because if this was reasonably priced I'd be shouting from the rooftops as it's purchase being a necessity. As it is, it's great if you've got money to spend, but... the price rankles me a lot.

I also looked into the Overclass DLC (providing an additional promotion to each class once they've maxed out. ie. a level 20 Bow Knight can now become an Oliphantier, gaining a new model, animations, and an additional point of range). Then I saw that again they were asking over twenty for all ten and pfffft. Plus, I doubt I'm going to take many units all the way to level twenty in their top-class anyway, (and if I do, I probably won't play much beyond that). And I have the three FLC Villager Forks and the Dread Fighter-Villager cycle to use on anyone that does get capped.

The two exceptions were Alm and Celica, who were both around level 18 by the time I got to Thabes and who I wanted to keep using. So for six dollars I picked up the Conqueror and Rigain Overclasses for them. Looks wise, Alm is pretty nice (essentially the same as the Hero, but... more) while I prefer Celica's look as a Princess. I like the ceremonial horns both of them wear – reminiscent of their eventual descendant in Awakening, the Valmese Emperor Walhart.

    tumblr_ox4i3tDrjQ1vk4syxo1_500.png

Play wise, Conqueror gets an additional point of range for Alm's bows (just confirming that he's the series first Archer-Lord at heart). This is pretty useful for him. Celica gets access to Aura, which... is almost pointless, as she already has fantastic spell coverage. I wish the Rigain had given her an extra point of movement instead. As it is, Celica needs to have the Boots used on her to be able to get at enemies (or have a Mage Ring equipped. Or both). I've also noticed that it appears the two Overclasses get experience at a greatly inflated rate compared to my other units.

tl;dr: the DLC is all pretty great, to the point where I wish the base game was more like it, but it's all at a price point that makes me reluctant to actually recommend it.

I think Echoes' story also has two big problems, one in Alm's route, one in Celica's.

Celica's route is all about how the Goddess Mila is missing and, as a result, the land is dying, the crops are failing, famine looms. Bit of a problem.
So Celica comes across the Jedah, the High Priest of Duma, who informs her that Mila has sadly been slain by Rudolf, but Duma is still very much alive. Unfortunately insane, but alive. He has a simple offer: if Celica offers her soul to Duma, Duma will be restored to sanity and he'll make the land fertile again and people won't starve. No need to make a decision right away, think it over, he'll see Celica again at the Tower of Duma.

And from there, every battle until you reach the Tower are Duma worshipers trying to murder Celica. I guess technically they want to capture her, but really, it's not a good look, is it? Jedah wants Celica to get to the Tower and he wants her to accept his villainous offer. Antagonizing her by murdering all her friends is not really in his best interests at that point in the story.

It really should have been Rigelian forces loyal to Rudolf trying to stop Celica because they don't want her anywhere near Duma.

And then we come to Alm's story. It's basically all about class division. The bad guys are all nobles who believe nobles are better by virtue of being born nobles and peasants are all terrible lower class people because they were born peasants. And Alm and friends believe that anyone can have talent, anyone can have skill, anyone can be anything!

    But...
No. That's not the case. Alm's royal blood really does just make him better than everyone else. Alm gets to wield the super-special royal sword because he's of royal blood. Alm gets to open the secret vault because he's of royal blood. Alm gets to finally slay Duma because his royal blood allows him to wield the sword capable of doing so.

Alm's nobility means he's just better than everyone else around him. If he was just some simply farm boy with great fighting and leadership skills, everybody would have died. Alm saves the day only because of the strength of his imperial blood.

So... yeah. That was a thing. Probably a result of this being an update of an NES game with little plot.

Still, I did really like the story of Echoes, mostly. It just kind of obviously dropped the ball a few times.
Oh, and then there's the very end where Celica is upset the two Divine Dragons who have nurtured (or 'nurtured') the land for all these centuries are dead and now the land may die and perhaps we'll all starve.

And Alm is like, nah, if the soil really does dry up, we'll just have to farm even harder.

Dude, that's not how agriculture works. But I guess I'll just chalk that one up to typical shonen anime protagonist optimism.

    This is extremely cool:

I very much like that there's a nice FE Awakening easter egg in there (given that game takes place in the same world as Shadow Dragon and Shadows of Valentia)

I don't know if 'shipped' is the exact same thing as sold, but that's still not a bad number, considering Warriors wasn't exactly the hugest title and had the misfortune of coming out around the time of Odyssey.

I'd like a sequel. But if I'm honest, I also wouldn't mind some more DLC - though a DLC that's not Shadow Dragon, Awakening or Fates. Since Lyn and Celica are already in the base game, a non-main 3 FEs-DLC isn't too much to hope for, is it?

I'd hope the DLC had a bit more substantial content than the ones we've been getting. Maybe a short story mode with new characters in addition to more history maps.

    And more new movesets, please.

I think the developers' original plan was to focus on just those three games, leaving Radiant Dawn/Paths, Sacred Stones, Genealogy, and such for a prospective second game. I would include Binding/Blazing Blade, but Lyn kind of scuppers that... though: Celica and Lyn were announced late, after the backlash to the initial roster, so maybe their inclusion was forced? (Actually, I just did some googling to double check this, and saw an interview where the developers didn't even want to include Lucina but IS pushed them to.)

Also, today Nintendo put out a new launch schedule (for investors) which lists Fire Emblem Switch as 2018 for all regions. The titles that don't have fixed dates seem like they might be listed chronologically, in which case it looks like Fire Emblem Switch could be planned for Septemeber/October, with Smash Bros. being the big holiday release. (Also a reminder that there's a theory floating in the fandom that Cipher Series 14, which should release in September, hasn't had info released about it as normal because it will feature the Switch cast.)

That is good on Warriors. I still wish I would have liked it as much as Hyrule Warriors though. I feel like they missed so many opportunities for something awesome with the weird way they designed it (with a bunch of characters being basically identical and having such a weird roster).

Edit: Side note, I think I have gone down a rabbit hole with these Cipher cards. Haha. I keep seeing cards with gorgeous artwork and I can't help but buy them :P Biggest splurge so far is this card for $15... I mean, look at this thing...

I've been buying them from a few places. eBay is one of them (trying to save money by either combining shipping on a few cards or looking for cheap listings - sometimes they are not a ripoff). Another one I've been using a lot is tcgrepublic.com (which is where I got that Titania card from). People on Serene's Forest were saying their prices are not good but I've found them at least usually better than ebay and they have free shipping (free priority shipping if you spend $80+ also). I probably bought most of my cards through them, though they have not arrived yet since I bought them so recently (and I think they are actually shipping them from Japan). The people there seemed really friendly though - they noticed one of the cards I ordered had the wrong image on the listing and contacted me to make sure I was getting the one I really wanted.

For boxes and packs and stuff, I ordered a box of set 8 and upcoming set 13 from amiami.com which probably has the best prices. Set 8 is Awakening so I like most of the characters in that game (it's also Genealogy children which I don't know most of... but I mean, I guess Seliph and Julia from Heroes? :/). Set 13 is gonna be Blazing Blade and Shadow Dragon, so I am expecting some awesome Lyn/Eliwood/Hector stuff :D

Serene's Forest recommended amenitydream.com also for individual cards with better prices, but the issue there is it's an entirely japanese site so you need a proxy shipping place. So I've kinda been intimidated to try it :P

Edit: For sleeves the only real good place I've found is ebay. amiami looked like they carried a bunch but every one I looked at was sold out. tcgrepublic has some but the price was pretty high.

Also I'd say do not use tcgrepublic for normal non-rare cards (N/HN) as the price actually did not seem very good (~$3 each). I've seen so many listings on ebay that are like "Pick 10 N cards from this lot for $1" and stuff which are way better value.

Edit 2: Side note, I'm still super sad this card is so expensive ($30+). I want it so bad :(
    167270.jpg

Edit 3: Oh, I should probably also mention the rarity system for anyone thinking of getting any that is not familiar with it since it confused me at first:

    N - common cards
HN - "High Normal" - uncommon cards which are basically a promoted version of a N card character (ex: like N would be Tactician Robin and HN would be Grandmaster Robin)
R - Rare. These are always foil
R+ - Rare+. These are a better version of a R card which are foil with some other effect like maybe a starburst pattern or gold lettering or a signature. Sometimes they have the same art as the equivalent R card and sometimes it's different art.
SR - Special Rare (or Secret Rare?). Generally cooler cards than just rare. Also foil
SR+ - Like R+, these are better versions of SR cards. I think most have signatures.
PR - Promotional cards. I don't think most of us these are foil, but maybe some are? I'm not sure.
R+X - Hidden Rare? Not sure what it stands for. But usually a real fancy foil card that is unrelated to the overall theme of the set.

I got back into Fire Emblem Warriors over the weekend. Still haven't completed Chapter 12, which I was stuck on. But I also didn't try.

I went into that Historical Battles thing and was working on those. Many months ago, when this game was new, I don't think I ever went in there and looked at them. Those seem like a great place to farm mats and find rare drops.

But man, those difficulties are all over the place. I guess these Historical events are meant to be played along-side the campaign? And you just play them here and there? Since I've never looked at them until now, I'm finding this whole wealth of extra missions

When I eventually do circle back and hit chapter 12 again, I'm gonna be way stronger. Of course, I don't think strength was my problem originally. I think I was just playing the map wrong.

Okay. Just decided that I'm ready for a proper FE on Switch. Fates didn't click with me in quite the same way as Awakening, which is possibly in my top 10 games of all time, and I needed a bit of a break (Heroes was a refreshing reminder, for a little while, as to what FE does so well). But now I'm clamoring for some new FE.

I would also accept a Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE port.

Fates just wasn't a very good game (and the localization was garbage - Corrin was the most boring, lifeless protagonist ever). But Echoes assured me that they still know what they're doing, so I'm optimistic.

    Huh.

I really liked Fates. And I thought it was an interesting story. Granted, I never finished it, so my opinion is only based on playing about 40% of Birthright (never played Conquest or Revelations) but I really liked what I did play of it.

And the character designs in Fates are top notch in my opinion.

(Of course, I do like Awakening more. Shepherds are the best!)

That's honestly about all I played of it too before I kind of lost interest. I'd actually like to go back and finish at some point. At the very least I'd like to try out Conquest and see if I liked it better, or see if the story actually gets better in Revelations. (I still need to get off my ass and finish Echoes first though - that one I am so close to the end I'm pretty sure... I just haven't gotten around to beating it... if anything the only thing really holding me back there was how ridiculous and stupid cantors were... reminds me of FEH Rival Domains/Grand Conquest :P).

Character design was good, character writing was not. Most of the characters were very boring and/or one dimensional. Takumi was just kind of an ass the whole time. The support conversations which are supposed to bring out a lot of their personality were just kind of... there.. There wasn't much to them. Corrin was boring as hell like I said. It was all just kind of a let down for me - especially going from an avatar character who basically became my favorite character in the franchise to... Corrin... and a game that was so good it got me into the franchise to one that kind of let me down.

The weird thing is the designs are so strong that I actually do like a lot of the characters despite that. I've really grown fond of Hinoka for example just based on my playtime with her in Fire Emblem Heroes. That's kind of the reason I want to give the game another shot - at least to see the story and who some of these characters are that I haven't really met (i.e. a lot of the Nohr side) but keep showing up in Heroes. I also feel like in general I've just gotten better at understanding how to play the Fire Emblem games, so it would be nice to come at this from a more informed perspective (i.e. it was kind of a breath of fresh air in Echoes actually turning on the enemy movement grid, properly understanding the strengths and weaknesses of different classes and their stats, etc)

I never finished Echoes either. I got burned out on how long battles were starting to take. Anytime it has enemies who can summon, those battles end up taking FOREVER to clear. The ones where they spawn 3-4 summons at once are the worst. And it seems like on Celica's side of the map that's all you fight are summoners.

Oh. That's the other thing. I found the story absolutely wonderful in that game, and the dungeon diving and stuff was an unexpected but welcome surprise. But switching back and forth between Celica and Alm... My Celica army is super awesome, has tons of great gear, and they generally can handle any challenge the game throws at them (even if it takes for fuckin' ever because of all the summoners.) On the other side, I dread playing as Alm's army because they suck. Their gear is all awful, and they're basically all just boring old physical dudes. I've got knights and mercenaries and archers galore, but I don't have any of the really cool units on that side of the map.

So I find Alm's battles to be way less entertaining, and also way more difficult.

Haha yes, cantors were the freaking worst. I think that was one area where it probably helped that I had gotten a bit better at Fire Emblem games because I was able to push passed them despite how much they sucked. I kinda agree about the armies too - Celica's is way more fun. I actually (AFAIK) beat her side and I'm on the very last part of Alm's path. I probably have like four missions and a dungeon to go or something. Then I assume it'll do something to wrap up the story after that (I can't imagine there's another Act though unless it's like a "Final Act" - I'm at the top of the map). Last time I tried to pick it back up the Alm mission I was on absolutely kicked my ass. I've been playing on Hard, but Casual (because I'd rather just ignore the permadeath mechanic than save scum or miss out on stuff due to dead characters :P)

Actually been thinking recently I might want to try again though. Been on a bit of a Fire Emblem kick so I've been craving more Fire Emblem overall :D Even been going back and watching the Gamexplain let's play of Fire Emblem: Blazing Blade (which is a lot more entertaining when I actually recognize a lot of the characters from Heroes)

    Ooooh. That's a good idea.

I might also see if they did a Let's Play of Shadow Dragon, because that's the game Marth is from, and I honestly have no idea anything at all about Marth.

I should check on that too for Shadow Dragon. I did dig up the Fire Emblem anime (which covers Shadow Dragon) on youtube, but it ends kind of abruptly with no resolution to the story. Still was a bit entertaining to see how cheesy it was :D

Man. I don't get this stupid chapter 12 mission at all in FEW. Like. At all.

    "Xander is in serious trouble!"
    "Ryoma has fallen to Xander!"

    ... what?

This mission doesn't make any sense at all. I'm pushing the map equally. I get it down to two forts remaining -- one on each side. Yellow has one fort, and Red has one fort. And then someone ALWAYS keels over and dies. Usually Ryoma. He seems to suck really bad at staying alive.

I've restarted this mission probably 20 times by now. This is the mission that made me quit FEW the first time. But now I'm back. And powered up quite a bit from the History Missions. Power isn't the problem. The problem is that the loss condition on this map is not made clear at all. I don't know how to fucking balance the map anymore than I already am. If the sides are equal and the base count is the same, why are they dying? It isn't even like it's hard. I can plow through. And then an invisible loss condition is triggered. And Ryoma always dies.

Side note: My dudes go absolutely retarded when I'm not controlling them. Why do they always fall back as soon as I switch who I'm controlling. Example: I'm controlling Cordelia and I take a red base on the right side of the map. Then I switch to Lyssa and take a yellow base on the left side of the map. And while I'm controlling Lyssa, Cordelia falls back to some other random position or changes direction completely while I'm not controlling her. It's super annoying.

Side note 2: My dudes going the wrong direction is not the cause of me failing this mission. I'm micro-managing it enough that I am overcoming the retarded AI. I simply would prefer to not have to micro it so closely.

    Nevermind. I just cleared it.

Didn't really change my strategy, but I did change the dudes I brought with me to battle. Not sure why that helped, but it did. I brought Takumi (archer) instead of Frederick, and I brought Chrom instead of the girl twin. I want to say Rowena, but I know that's wrong because surely the twins aren't Rowan and Rowena. But since I can't remember her actual name, she's now Rowena.

Silque and Genny both learn expel, which can help with that. (I often just sent someone forward with Silque's Warp to snipe the Cantor (all of their summons will disappear when they're dead) and then had (Cleric) Faye Rescue them, but that's not really viable if your Faye isn't a Cleric.)

On Fates: all three routes have terrible stories. I actually found Birthright's to be the best. Conquest... results in Corrin making constantly terrible choices to the detriment of everyone on the planet, and Revelations is straight up nonsensical. On the other hand, Conquest has some of the most fun maps in the entire series, and the classic low-gold/no grinding means you have to really weigh your decisions. So I'd recommend giving it a spin. And Revelations can be fun in an extremely extravagant way (sixty-six units available, plus ten capturable unique ones). For example, in my Revelations run Rinkah's friendship with Charlotte let her class change into a Berserker (after getting the Death Blow skill from Oni Chieftan), so with a Killer Axe and the Berserker's inherent crit boost she was attacking with a near 100% critical hit chance. Which was fun.

Personally, after finishing Echoes I've decided to go back and do another playthrough of Awakening (my first Fire Emblem). I had a lot of fun on my second playthroughs of Conquest and Birthright by doing No-Paralogues/No-Grinding/No-Kids so I'm doing that again. I'm also playing with the default Robin as I found Fates' stories seemed to be more enjoyable when I played as F!Corrin (than as a personal avatar). I've also decided to pretend that pair-up works like it does in Fates, so I'm using it to ferry people and hide wounded and weak units in trouble, but not just defaulting to sticking everybody together like I did when I first played it.

So far I've just finished up the first arc of the story and it's fun. Man though, some of those chapters are hard. This is around the time that I remember the story losing steam, but hopefully if I'm not being distracted by the children things will flow better.

I'm also trying to use more units that I ended up benching the first time through (though it's been a bit tricky - the game gives you a lot more units then you can field in those early missions). Stahl is one of my MVPs so far. I didn't use him at all originally, but he's been amazing. Lon'qu too. Though he's become a liability to bait with - I'll set things up so that he takes a hit and holds a point, only for him to crit multiple opponents and get worn down. Man, I miss Mila's Turnwheel. (I'm not save scumming, but I'm glad I'm playing Casual and saving every once and awhile 'cause I don't think I could put up with those enemy spawns that attack right away otherwise.)

I'm also noticing that I've progressed a lot as a player. Thanks to Echoes I'm keeping to cover and actually utilising the support staves (like Rescue, which I used to stick in my inventory and be afraid to use in case I needed it "later"). And thanks to Heroes I actually pay attention to the weapons triangle.

My favourite moment so far came in the one map where there are four Thieves at the start with drop-able items, who will all run to exit the map. I'm pretty sure when I first played this I had high level Chrom+Cordelia and Robin+Sumia just fly around and kill them no problem. But this time I actually had to think about who I wanted to go after (the guy with the Master Seal and the guy with the Gold) and just let the others escape. The one with the Master Seal got run down by my one team, but the Gold guy was outpacing the rest of my forces so I had to send Sumia and Cordelia forward unsupported. They were in range to take the Thief the next turn, but then some Wyvern Riders spawned and severely hurt Cordelia. So on my turn she had to hide by pairing with Sumia, who flew forward at the Thief. I could have speared him, but that would have left them exposed to a number of opponents so I stayed on a ridge and javelined him instead. On the enemy turn, a Barbarian steps up and knocks Sumia to about a third of her health. The other ground units cluster behind. And then the Wyverns come swooping in. Sumia dodges a hand axe from the first, and then the second. Exhale. They fly back towards my lines and Maribelle completes Operation Pay-The-Man by Rescuing them both behind friendly units (and out of range of those nasty Wyverns).

Ok I picked Echoes back up tonight. OK, remember why I had trouble with this mission. Jesus. Screw you stupid witch and you Medusa spell.. also your area being surrounded by a most that only infantry can cross one square at a time.

Finally beat it though with judicious turnwheel abuse.. haha.. I think I'll stop there for now, but getting closer...

So there’s been no word on anymore updates to FE Warriors?

Because the skills screen is left with four spots for the three villain mages and Darius.

I'm drawing near to the end of the game. I'm ready to begin chapter 20.

But I keep getting distracted by History Mode. Gotta get more mats!
I mostly just want to unlock Celica at this point. I've got a TON of mats stockpiled for her.

That’s really annoying. Four spaces left for personal skills, four characters left, but we’re not getting them?

I wasn’t expecting a DLC pack with a new history mode map but just a “btw villains now playable fyi” update like Hyrule Warriors got.

I'm not sure you want them. I'm pretty sure as they are in game right now, all 3 wizards are Robin clones and Darius is a Rowan/Lianna clone

Frankly I'm a little annoyed with how they handled DLC and character selection. I recall them saying they didn't include popular characters (ex: Ike, Roy, etc) because they pretty assumed they were going to make a sequel and wanted to save them. I think that's why all the DLC was somewhat boring choices too (a bunch of which were already in the game, just not playable). On top of which everyone just played the same as each other. Real shame after how amazing Hyrule Warriors was in terms of character diversity and movesets.

On an unrelated noted, the Cipher box I ordered from amiami finally arrives today! I'm super hyped to see what cards I get :3
