Y’all done talking about cost of living and what is a reasonable salary?

No it was how much money buys happiness

All of the moneys! To a point!

I find the answer is always 20-25% more than you are currently making

that would not nearly be enough

It’s basically infinite money. There is always a desire to be doing a little bit better than you were before and I am convinced that the feeling does not abate even as the fear of being poor or homeless subsides.

If you're making over 75k a year, then you're getting the most happiness out of money.

    https://content.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,2019628,00.html
People say money doesn't buy happiness. Except, according to a new study from Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School, it sort of does — up to about $75,000 a year. The lower a person's annual income falls below that benchmark, the unhappier he or she feels. But no matter how much more than $75,000 people make, they don't report any greater degree of happiness.

I make about half this, so I'm presumably 50% miserable.

Oh, okay, that's the article I read as well. I dunno why my brain said $88,000.

    Anyway.

I had this conversation with a group of people where I made probably less than the median and definitely much less than the average, and people were generally pleased with their compensation.

...and I have to say, it made me sort of displeased with my compensation, and made me think about going into finance to earn some real fuck you money (this one friend keeps telling me I'd like it, and then gave some numbers--those numbers being 250K first year and 425K second year, WHAT THE FUCK)

Valve should be cleaning house. They should have a person who's job is to try to install a game and play 30 minutes in, and if it can't do either of those tasks successfully, it gets boots anyone who bought it gets a refund.

If during that 30 minute period the game is garbage, give them a chance to prove it isn't and move on. 3 strikes and your company is banned.

Time is also super important. The guy making 150k a year pulling 60-80 weeks is not making 150k a year at his job, he's make 70k a year at his two jobs. Which are still good salaries, but your losing out on about 50k in overtime.

Jesus. Miss me with that shit. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hedonic_treadmill
The hedonic treadmill, also known as hedonic adaptation, is the observed tendency of humans to quickly return to a relatively stable level of happiness despite major positive or negative events or life changes.[1] According to this theory, as a person makes more money, expectations and desires rise in tandem, which results in no permanent gain in happiness. Brickman and Campbell coined the term in their essay "Hedonic Relativism and Planning the Good Society" (1971).[2] During the late 1990s, the concept was modified by Michael Eysenck, a British psychologist, to become the current "hedonic treadmill theory" which compares the pursuit of happiness to a person on a treadmill, who has to keep walking just to stay in the same place.[citation needed] The concept dates back centuries, to such writers as St. Augustine, cited in Robert Burton's 1621 Anatomy of Melancholy: "A true saying it is, Desire hath no rest, is infinite in itself, endless, and as one calls it, a perpetual rack, or horse-mill."[improper synthesis?]

All happiness and sadness is temporary, unless you're actually suffering from a mental disorder (in which case seek help).

So chasing happiness is pointless. Let the little things in life give you joy, or laugh at the futility of it all.

So what you are saying is I can have permanent happiness if I just get the right mental disorder.

    I enjoy working. A lot.

I also enjoy playing videogames, sleeping, eating good food, making love to a beautiful woman, and getting good and drunk in fun places far from home.

My problem is not work, it is that there isn't enough time in my life to do it all, and if I dont work I cant do a lot of those other things... and since I like working anyways...

I remain convinced that the point where money can't buy more happiness is somewhere in the neighbourhood of "can buy all the countries you want"

The world is not enough for me.
