Triangle Strategy coming 2022. It's a working title, but so was octopath.

Octopath Traveler OP:

"Eight heroes. Eight stories to discover."

A turn based JRPG from some of the minds behind the Bravely Default series. What more do you need to know?

Alright fine. Pick one of eight characters, each one starting in a different area of the world and their own origin story. Switch between them as you move through, and perhaps, eventually get all eight together. Each character has their own skills and combat style (fighter, thief, cleric, etc), but also has Path Actions that they can use on the field. These open up new possibilities and give some flexibility on how you tackle different puzzles in the game. Do you want to challenge a guy to get the map you need? Sure, but he might not miss it if you just pick his pocket. Or maybe you want to try and buy it from him instead, keeping the peace? There's a bit of flexibility there, and it makes for some fun stories.

In combat, the Bravely heritage really starts to shine through, but with almost a bit of Grandia mixed in. Above the battlefield is an initiative meter showing the turn order. Enemies have weaknesses, whether elemental or damage type (slash, pierce, blunt), and if you hit the enemy with their weakness you have a chance to break them, costing them their next turn. This also opens them up to far greater damage. Also, as you attack and take damage, you build up a meter that you can use to produce an even bigger attack. That little flame spell just became a battlefield engulfing wall of fire!

70t0lqildaln.jpg

The game is also strikingly beautiful. Square Enix is calling it "HD-2D" and the screens show why. The characters are simple sprites on what I'd describe as an artfully pixelated background, and the in-combat enemy models are just gorgeous.

I've been drooling over this game since the first trailer last year. It releases on 13July which cannot come soon enough. There's a demo up on the eShop which will let you play for up to three hours with any of the characters, and that progress will transfer to the full game. Definitely worth a look.

Turns out that boosting the ability doesn't just give you more chances it also changes the possible outcomes and their likelyhood. JP * 100 and EXP * 100 both require a full boost and are a 0.1% chance.

I already played Olberic and Primrose in the first demo, so I started with Cyrus this time. He's great! The voice actor sounds like a Shakespearean play actor, but not in a bad way. Think I'm going to do Therion or H'aanit tonight.

I started the demo today. First character I'm trying is H'aanit, and she's kind of insufferable because of the faux Ye Olde Englishe speak. Like I said, I had to parse the word "Witnessedst" and them using "Doe, Doen, and Don" instead of "do"

Has anyone figured out yet if you have total freedom in where you can go once you finish chapter 1? I'd like to pick up certain characters earlier than others, but maybe some roads are blocked off or something.

Specifically, I'd like to start with Primrose and work my way clockwise around the map.

This is from the bravely default crew? For some reason I keep getting a Saga offshoot vibe from the preview stuff. Hype levels intensifying.

Yeah this game screams of SNES era Saga games. It is crazy.

I assume there will be a more linear overall path than Saga games though. Maybe more like the originals on the GB.

Do you get to play everybody's path from the very start in a single playthrough if you want to? I can't find a lot of info about how exactly the octopath works.

I think to get people to join your party you need to play through their prologue anyway, so you basically won't miss anything in a single playthrough.

Finished Therion and Cyrus' first chapters. I liked Therion's story hook better, but I prefer Cyrus as a character overall.

So now it's down to either Primrose or Cyrus as my starting character once the full game is out.

Yes, you can. Rather, you start a new game and overwrite the already-completed file. That's what I'm doing; I'm replaying the demo, knocking out 2 prologues per playthrough (all there's time for, if you watch the cutscenes), and restarting to play different prologues. I've only got Primrose and Olberic left, since I've seen theirs from the last demo.

At some point I'm gonna try to skip all the cutscenes and see if it's possible to recruit all 8 people in 3 hours, and see how much time is left over for the orange side quests after that. If that's not possible, then at the very least we'll all be able to choose which 1 or 2 characters to get a head start with when the game comes out proper.

XBL, PSN, and NNID: "ConnConnor" for all three.

Played through primrose in the original demo and then Tessa and Cyrus in the new demo. I dig it. I went ahead and pre-ordered it for the prime discount. I like the path mechanic meaning there is more than one way to finish a side quest, I like the voice acting and the story so far is interesting, and I think the shield system is interesting as well. I haven't really played many jrpgs like this since well, FF VI probably, so I like that it's different but not TOO complicated.

A couple of things bother me.
    - I hope the main characters actually interact more after the prologue chapters, but I'm aware they may not. I assume something is going to tie these stories more together down the line though, so maybe!
    - it feels odd that there are so many townspeople you just can't interact with at all.
    - I wish during Tessa's purchase path action you could see how a weapon or armor's stats compare to what you're wearing, like when you go to the actual merchants, but this is just a minor quibble and probably part of the the path - I mean, you're just getting side deals, it's not a formal setting, and it's supposed to be a gamble (like I've noticed the prices vary from merchants, sometimes more and sometimes less).

Edit: forgot to add. Does anyone know if the first character you pick has any influence on the main game? I know you can do all the stories in a single play through, so I hope who you pick first makes no difference. But I guess in the demo, if you go crazy fast and get more than four, you can't switch your first character out of your team.

I started with the thief, and...
Many years ago, my husband ran a Call of Cthulu game (short-lived). The PCs were investigating a mansion where there was weird stuff. In our attempts to escape, we tried to go out an upstairs window. The upstairs servant--a rickety old man--got in our way. My husband intended for this butler to just slow us down slightly. However, sometimes the Dice Know and this butler appeared to be some kind of ex-commando badass of evasion and precision. He nearly downed the whole party.

Last night, I turned the Switch to my husband and said "I'm retconning Old Butler's name to be Heathcote,"

Maybe it was a reddit or something, but I remember seeing a spreadsheet document of the kinds of things you can get to drop from people you fight in Olberic's Chapter when the first demo was around. Some of those items were drop-only, as in, you would not see that equipment in a store and it was the best equipment at the time.

If there isn't a strategy guide put out at the same time of this game's release, I both relish and despise that knowing me, I'll be beholden to have the best 100% file in one playthrough, and it's going to necessitate that level of detail and making sure I don't miss out on any rare item that might actually be missable because game progression might lock out a zone or path.

Also I'm not sure I understand the play here: Do we try out each character, then delete and speed through x numbers of prologue to carry over?

Maybe I haven't gotten far enough in one yet, but is there a point where it will say "cleric unlocked" or something?

No joke, one of the guys on a FB gamer group I help mod is all "I was all on board to play Bravely Default, but as soon as I heard you could IAP in it, they lost a sale from me."

SP Potions is probably one of the least intrusive and not-noticable things in that game, unless you abuse the Bravely Second mechanic all the time. I guess, good on him for sticking to a principle of just avoiding any game with microtransactions, but it feels like a really silly thing to draw a line in the sand over.

i don't think even that moment requires you to have any SP. if I remember correctly, the story advances as soon as you hit the stop-time button. You only spend SP if you then perform an action in the frozen time; stopping time costs nothing.

Hmm, possible. I so rarely used the mechanic that I didn't notice.

I found the whole bit amusingly clever too though. And far better than the first game's antics.
