I've been catching up on the last few eps of Nathan for you since I saw it on hulu and I'm on the last episode now. The stuff with the escort is fucking killing me. I'm dead.

I got a pretty heavily liberal vibe from Sorkin with The Newsroom, more than The West Wing.

Newsroom still wasn't without it's problems, though.

The Newsroom pilot had the heroic lead speaking truth to power by calling young people the "Worst period generation period ever period."

Which is fucking RICH coming from a Boomer

There is nothing more conservative than blaming problems on the young and powerless, which was Newsroom's whole fuckin' m.o.

Also Sorkin can only write "tough women who can hang in a Boomer's vision of a 'man's world'" or "women who do not exist in reality"

There have been few scenes that turned me around more on a creator than that fucking self-satisfied bullshit rant from the Newsroom

A trap is for fish: when you've got the fish, you can forget the trap. A snare is for rabbits: when you've got the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words are for meaning: when you've got the meaning, you can forget the words.

You people are not wrong about that rant in episode 1, it does come off in a self-satisfied way... but as you go through the show it does change a bit. The point of the rant was to show that Will is a bit of an ass. He's self-loathing and frustrated with the way the news is being run, while also being part of the problem. On top of this, he isn't all there mentally, to the point where he isn't sure if Emily Mortimer's character is a hallucination or not. The show also comes around on blaming the younger generation. It turns out the sorority girl that asked the question that sparked the rant, was the real reason America is the greatest nation in the world all along.

but who are also kind of ditzy in a very particular 40s rom-com kind of way.
basically you could probably cast Jane Russell in any Sorkin-written female role.

If you think he hasn't been mailing the MTV head offices letters demanding Next be brought back since the day they cancelled it (oh and also envelopes full of poop, but that's related to a different matter), then you think wrong!

my only casting suggestion for new Daria would be Zendaya as Jane, but given the reboot is called Daria & Jodie, I suspect there is no more Jane Lane

I wonder if the change was done so it's not 2 white girls commenting on everything, but rather a POC that can have a perspective that maybe Daria doesn't consider.

At first I was bummed it was going to be "Daria and Jodie" because it felt like they were tacking Jodie on, but the more I thought about it, the more I think it could have really interesting and smart commentary from both characters interacting and not being from the same place.

I'll watch whatever they give me but yeah, the show worked before because both characters were on the same page

I would be very interested in a version of Jodie who wasn't an honor student and one of the cool kids

I think Jodie and Daria were typically on the same page, but they did have differing opinions when it came to race and "playing the game" when it came to extra curriculars and college.

Some of the best Daria moments were when she wasn't necessarily 100% right, and learnedfrom it.

Ahh I'd forgotten Jodie was already a character, thought at first they were making a new character for the best friend - that does seem like it could be an interesting dynamic, and they may drop Jodie from popular kid to 'Daria but slightly less cynical'.

I liked that Jodie and Mack (daddy) were in the popular crowd but also recognized the superficiality of that group. They were a good bridge that allowed Daria and Jane to naturally interact with that group.

I always liked the development her sister (Quinn?) got.

For that matter the mom and dad became way more supportive and accepting of who Daria was.

And I loved the episode where Daria writes a short story and it's pretty much a glimpse into their future.

Man..that show was more optimistic than I originally remember it to be.

quinn's arc is pretty good, yeah

I also think I'm one of the dozen or so people who actually liked Tom

not like...as a person, he's just kind of dull for the most part, but I do like how he actually pushed back on Daria when she got shitty

I finished season 3 of Fargo a few days ago and... I'm not quite sure how I feel about it.
The showrunners really put the series though some huge tonal changes as they progressed the seasons. Where season 1 felt hopeful, and its villains had interesting quirks, season 3 felt bleak and nihilistic and season 2 split the difference.

    My Very Official Fargo Rankings: Movie > S1 > S2 > S3

I think the Tom fight and the fight about Jane joining the track team and getting special treatment for it were the only things they ever had serious fights about

Trent's smirk and comment of "you guys are weird" was absolutely perfect.

Trent was such a good character in that show.
