Yo I've been going through SU from the beginning and just thought you all might find it interesting that the thing Lapis finds in the last two episodes makes an appearance in "It could have been great".
Feeling kinda spoilery with that last one but maybe its a huge mislead.
Seems its 22 minutes so its probably not a Rising tides/Crashing skies situation

Having finally gotten around to watching the last few episodes this weekend, I'm still kind of blown away by the reveal. Pink/Rose started her own uprising, against herself, because she thought that was the only/best way to convince Homeworld to leave the planet alone.
But think about it. That means for every single battle that occurred during the war, she was at least indirectly in charge of both sides. She was ultimately responsible for every single gem that gets popped, bubbled, or shattered, on either side. One imagines that the only reason the Crystal Gems managed so much success during the war was because Pink/Rose had inside information about where to strike, when, who would be there, and could control counter-attacks and intelligence. Every time she fought, she fought for both sides.
And then, at the end of the war. I am 99% sure that Yellow Diamond knows exactly what happened and is responsible for the nuke. We know Pink had complained to the other Diamonds about the planet. She was closest to Yellow, seeing her as a mentor/older sister. Knowing how fond Pink was of making bad decisions, she likely told Yellow her thoughts on gems being independent and free to grow, and Yellow of course shut her down, maybe humoring her since she was so young. But when Pink was "shattered," I'm guessing Yellow was smart enough to put 2 and 2 together. There's a good chance that there's not a weapon on earth (or Earth) that can actually shatter a Diamond. Yellow would realize this, and realized Pink had pulled off the ultimate gamble. Yellow can't admit that Pink faked it, because that would suggest that a Diamond was anything less than a perfect aspect of Homeworld. For a (flawed) gem to rebel is one thing, but a Diamond is unthinkable. Pulling out was the only thing left to save face without revealing Pink's secret. But as a last measure of spite, Yellow nukes the planet, turning every gem there into a monster. Pink/Rose was all about letting gems grow, defining their own actions and becoming more than they were, and the devolving nuke made sure not a single gem left (save those directly protected by Pink/Rose) would ever have that opportunity again. It would also explain Yellow's actions, both during the trial (poofing the lawyer when he comes a bit too close to the truth) and in her "consoling" of Blue, which always came across as shallow.

Everything about the show indicates that Yellow 100% buys into Pink's death and blames Rose for it.
The show also has stated that the other diamonds (at least Blue) was on Earth during the rebellion and taking charge.
Rose thinks the diamonds don't love her or care for her, so if she dies they'll just give up on Earth. Is ready to do this after the breaking point is revealed to her and she doesn't want any 'real casualties.'
And then whoops turns out the Diamonds care.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Pink Diamond was dead for most of the war is my impression. Her death was effectively the start of it.
Although it's not quite clear when some events are happening. The main one I'm thinking of is in The Answer. Pink Diamond is not mentioned iirc but the war is also fairly low key, so I guess she's alive at that point, if she was dead it would probably be a more pressing issue than the mild annoyance that they're portrayed as. Checking the wiki it seems that "the Crystal Gems" might have been literally just Rose and Pearl at that (pre-death) point. I don't think they mention that Rose's Pearl is Pink Diamond's Pearl in the episode. Though I guess all Pearls look alike.

That doesnt mesh with Jaspers origin.
Beta kindergarten was established late in the war when the Crystal gems were winning and Jasper was there when Pink diamond was "killed"

The War chronology is confusing and what we have been shown has been contradictory. Which is good for an ongoing narrative but I'm worried that there's going to be a few loose threads at the end of it.

I was always under the impression that
Pink Diamond's "death" was the end of the war as that's when the diamonds unleashed the corruption and peaced out.

Keep in mind, we are hearing and seeing the stories as different people tell those stories to Steven.
Everyone remembers what happened differently, and to them key moments might have happened at different points in their memory.
Pink Diamond gets sick of being treated as a 'lesser' diamond, finally gets a colony, earth
Finds out that part of creating a gem colony would entail eliminating all other sentient life in the planet, she’s not okay with this, assumes the dual identity of rose quartz, and absconds with her Pearl to fight against the gems.
Becomes kind of a good guy Palpatine, controlling both sides, and ensuring that the rebellion is able to grow.
Petitions the other diamonds to just leave earth be, and that the rebellion is just too much of a bother for one colony. It doesn’t work, and they insist she end the rebellion post-haste
Realizes that the only way they would be convinced to leave earth, would be her own death. So she uses Pearl to do the deed. But the diamonds react more strongly than she anticipated, and when leaving, also opt for a scorched earth campaign

One minor quibble
Pink probably knew exactly what making a colony entailed. Colonizers and slavers are often told the cost of their social order in a general sense. They dont care. Why would they? Youre told that for Gems to continue and grow some lesser beings are muscled out whats the big deal?
Its a very different thing when those being have faces and names though.
Rewatching old episodes before the new round. Forgot early in "Joking Hazard" Sadie just casually mentions that someone straight up died in "the accident" at the doughnut.

After rewatching season 4 on bluray I have come to the conclusion that Onion Gang is indeed the worst episode, and season 4 is by far the weakest season where nothing really happens.
The only character changed by the events in this season is Amethyst. And barely.
Bring on these next episodes and the true conclusion to the original third season and maybe things will balance out.
Cant disagree more. Its possible there are more low class episodes then previous seasons(although I like the onion gang and could think of four or five episodes I dislike way more) and I think the highs are some of the best stuff the show every did. Both trips out to space were big highlights to me. Also I feel that a big exception to the character growth complaint is steven himself. He deals with a lot that season and has a lot he works through.
Season four ends at I am my Mom.
It is not so much a finale as it is an ending.
Steven keeps all his conflict and development to himself. He never actually voices any of his concerns to the others.
He finds out about pink diamonds fate at the end of season 3 and only asks Greg about it 10 episodes later.
It's all bottled up inside and boils over right at the end of I am my Mom. It's good stuff but all of this is from last season. Nothing in season 4 causes him to change his perspective.
The trial would be a way better season finale and cliffhanger.
I really liked how this episode recontextualized Garnet's meeting with Rose. And it added a bit more to the line where she told Garnet to never question this; it was as much a statement to herself and to Pearl, that this is right.
It was also nice to clarify stuff about Rose's war and the zoo and her general motivations. Yes, fighting a shadow war effectively against herself was dangerous, possibly foolish, and definitely at least a bit selfish, but she felt she had no other options, since attempting to reason with the other Diamonds or abdicate didn't work.
I like the concept of Garnet giving Rose an example to follow, without even really realizing it.

Although pacing (even outside of the whole thing with Steven Bombs) is probably my most consistent criticism with this show.
Oh and apropros of nothing but OK KO's second season has started off strong.
Lord Cowboy Darrell is really good.
