I don't have any room for growth in my current position, so I really do need to find a better job, but the first two places to show interest are a nosql bank position, and sysadmin in the medical industry. Beggars can't be choosers, but damn. I don't want to turn into Bowen.

I'm the on-call escalation this week, and my primary hasn't been answering his phone all fucking week long. I got called at 3 AM today. I'm out for blood.

ilu Bowen, I just don't want your job
Medical is a really solid field with good job safety, outside of my boss being annoying.
Nosql in a bank is lol, stay away from that situation jesus
not a doctor, not a lawyer, examples I use may not be fully researched so don't take out of context plz, don't @ me
If someone is interested now someone who is more in line with what you want to do will be interested later.
True. I'll interview with everyone though, just so I can do some interviewing myself. It's possible this job is better than I'm expecting. If I don't go, I'll never know.
They bought a new ESXi server, the seller came in and did the initial set up. And now... I'm admin on it?
Day 1. Google: how 2 Vsphere.
I suggest taking an old PC, putting the free version of ESXi on it, and just, y'know, fuck with it a lot
Reminder that VMWare have a fucking shitload of Hands On Labs you can access for free.
Yeah, I did the first one yesterday. From the web interface I can make a VM. Turn it into a template, and make clones from that template. I played around with making permission profiles and got it to talk to AD.
The only thing I had trouble with was when I went to upload an .ISO so I could do some OS installs on the VMs, I kept getting security certificate errors. Even after I added the site to every trust thingy I could find. So I'm just gonna do that with PowerCLI.

Also "the medical industry" is a pretty broad term.
If it's in a 24/7/365 bigass hospital, that would be maybe... erf..
If it's like a modest specialist clinic or something that has normal hours and doesn't have in-patient care or emergency calls or something, that's basically any other job plus HIPPA.

It's with a centralized IT center that handles IT for several hospitals in the state, but the job isn't in a hospital itself.

That.
Sounds.
Awesome.
Well good news? I did the interview today at 1, and they just emailed me an offer.
I had a friend who has a job like that for the VA and he loves it. He hates that they keep cutting staff, but he loves it.
The people I interviewed with are hiring because they're expanding. They used to only handle the big hospital in town; the folding in of the other hospitals has them on a hiring spree.

If they're hiring a lot of people at once that might be a really good sign that they aren't stupid!
The thing I would always look out for with banks is how much Fiserv software they use.
Is it a lot? Then expect that 95% of your decisions regarding your network will be made for you, and they'll be really really fuckin' dumb.
Thing with financial core software is there's really no solution where this isn't true. That's the dirty secret. They all fucking suck. The grass isn't greener on the other side of the fence. The grass is fucking brown. Everywhere. All financial core grass is fucking brown.
The one question that matters is if their core software is hosted or on prem.
If it's hosted, it'll merely be annoying. If it's on prem, it's shitty brown dead grass. Period.

Yeah, this is a great place to be. The infrastructure is all there already, and you're being brought in as a warm body to help expand the support. Once that expanded stuff is all going pretty smoothly, you can start implementing new stuff to make the old stuff better to show off what you can do.

These people are hungry for hires. If you didn't tell them what salary range you were looking for, and you haven't accepted yet, ask them for 5k more than they offered. They'll meet it easily.

I can.
I mean my terminal is set to green on black.
You say thiis like it would be a bad thing.

I mean, if your servers are set up to allow you to telnet into them you have some problems.
I mean fair.
I could probably find a work around for that.
Hook up a raspi to it and use the raspi as a translation box to ssh.
Done.

the "no true scotch man" fallacy.
it's going okay
Nobody is using it yet, so it's not really live exactly.
I just found out what it going to be used for.
Notes for day 2: google how 2 powercli.
Make the company pay for it and give you an older box.
Call it your dev sandbox.

You meant VMUG, right?
the "no true scotch man" fallacy.
Sure. I knew of the program but had forgotten the name.
Part of the disadvantage of mostly just being on my phone.

At least until Devops just sort of found me and said "This is where you live now"

I don't know for sure. Because the job listing mentioned Mongo experience, I assume it was Mongo. I didn't contact them.
