I still have this sitting here unplayed since launch.

Should I go beat Nier first? Are there any callbacks or story points that tie Automata to the first one?

Minor easter eggs, for the most part

You get some context for some stuff too, but you don't need it for the main thrust of the story to have its impact

    Just play it

I mean, plenty of people played it after playing Nier but not Drakengard 1 or 3, when there's lots of references to those in Automata as well.

What are the problems with it?

In fullscreen mode it has some issues with actually running at the resolution you select. This can be bypassed by running windowed and using Borderless Gaming.

Well that shouldn't be a problem for me since I'm running it at low settings anyway.

The mod, FAR fixes it all, apparently. I played on PS4 Pro so I didn't have any of those issues myself.

Hmm actually looking into FAR it seems like there are some pretty nice improvements there. I'll pick that up.

Not doubting you - just wondering was there anything beyond
I think Accord is mentioned in one of the weapons or shops?

I'm gonna disagree with most of the people here and say that there is a segment of the game that was very clearly intended for you to already know what happened in Nier 1 and I spent basically all of it completely lost, which ultimately detracted from my experience with the game.
    Route C.

    What?

The only thing relevant to C from Nier is more backstory for Devola and Popola, which isn't that big a deal

    It's mostly 1.
There's fun cameos like the Dragoon Lance, and your already mentioned Accord reference.

There's also the Cult of the Watchers symbol popping up on Eve. Then in Patch C you have the Red Eye Disease, a curse from The Watchers that turns people berserk, everywhere which was originally supposed to only effect humans mutating into an android affecting disease. And the Terminal is clearly modeled after Manah and has the same goal of destroying humanity (or the remnants of) as the Watchers.

The machines have become a continuation of the Cult of the Watchers.

It's subtle stuff, but it shows the games are all connected and the real big bads are still out there.

Also, people should play NieR because it's good, not because they feel forced to for some reason to get more out of Automata.

I know I saw a lot of people who played Nier 1 talk about
Screaming at the TV when Devola and Popola show up

I kinda wish I could’ve had that reaction.

I'd like to play Nier, but I'm hoping for a Nier remaster on PS4, maybe with both versions included. Seems like the kind of thing that could happen.

I would say if you're playing Automata WITHOUT playing NieR first, DO NOT read a summary of NieR.

You can absolutely get 90% of everything out of Automata without NieR knowledge, and by reading things you'll rob yourself of some really cool moments if you do go back and play the first one.

I think seeing some things in Automata and being confused, or not knowing that it's a big deal, is just as fun in reverse.

I would go with Lunar Tear.

It seems to pop up in every game and is nice to look at, as opposed to Emil's face.

I haven't played this game in a few months

I started route C, and the jump in enemy level was so massive that I couldn't play anymore

I'd have to grind levels and that sounds really tedious

Is there a good way to do that?

About this spoiler, because it’s THE BEST.
If you know who they are, it’s fucking PERFECT, because Yoko fucking trolls you with them being in the backround at the hub for, at the time, LITERALLY NO REASON.

Can’t talk to em or nothin.

It’s even better because both of them should be dead.

    It was AMAZING

I never played Nier, but I did watch the 2BFPlay LP of Nier and seeing them just... standing back there made me go "Wait, why are they here?"

Bigger spoiler follows for accidental clickers
And then later when the troll gets super huge and you expect a zig and get a zag. Yeah, that's a cool moment. Not a super essential callback (because really, every other android in that route has been trying to fight you, so you're almost expecting to Boss Fight them at that point), but a super cool one.

If the whole Gestalt Project isn't the backstory for the Tower then that's kind of worse, because then there's no logic sequence to lead to what happens in Route C with some understanding of what's happening. Everything's moving along in an understandable progression up until the boxes appear and then what the fuck is even going on anymore.

Trying to tie Nier and Nier: Automata together should be handled the same way as KotOR 1 and A New Hope.

    You don't and can't and shouldn't.

    Nah

The things that tie the two are supplemental. Not entirely necessary to enjoy the core conceit of either of them, but are merely there to enhance the experience of either. There are neat things there and going back read up on the connections only made me love the product more.

Welp, the recent release and visual upgrade for the Xbox One X allowed me to finally play this (sold my PS4 a while back) after eyeing it for a while when it first came out.

First Taro game. Got endings A through E.

Honestly, I feel drained. Like, I can't even pick a other game to play. It's been two days and I haven't touched anything.
