It seems fairly out of character for Scrooge to mock the power of bouncing.

It gives humans super strength. Clearly antropomorphic animals, like ducks, gain bounce.

That video clearly features an older and wiser mcduck that has learned to respect the power of bouncing.

An older McDuck who has mastered the use of his cane.

This Webbigail iteration is a bit too one-note for me, but compared to the previous one she is fantastic.

I expect she'll get more development once she's adapted out of being horribly isolated.

The fact you could actually hear him exasperated in the background sold it for me.

Also, this latest episode made me very happy because what would have been a sight gag in any other show they just went nuts with in the best possible way. I'm all for integrating the entire Disney Afternoon into the new Ducktales.

    Only small quibble
No pogo cane? For shame Professor Von Drake!

The Avengers and Prisoner references were pretty choice as well though.

I'm really surprised people have this impression of her. To me, Webby is the furthest from "one-note" on the show and I don't get how she gets that description- because she's "wacky?" So are Glomgold and Launchpad, and neither of them have had multiple episodes exploring their emotional range and insecurities, or scenes that so clearly flesh out her all-but-screaming for acceptance from multiple people.

This version of Webby has spent her entire life growing up around Scrooge McDuck while not actually being part of his life, and she so clearly wants to be. The show's done a far better job exploring that so far than the side story of the boys' mom.

I think I just have difficulties resonating with characters that are very very very into something. It's the main reason a lot of sports/martial arts cartoons and anime bore me rigid.

This was a fantastic episode but it really just cements the notion that they really don't know what to do with Donald.

Only the original DuckTales cartoon downplayed Donald (he was only in two of the many episodes and was purposefully left out of the rest via his naval deployment). He was a main part of the comics. And he's in the majority of the title sequence of the new show, unlike Launchpad and Beakley (both of whom have had about as much, if not more, screentime than Donald at this point).

I agree they shouldn't overuse anyone or shoehorn any character that doesn't fit into the plot, but man, for a main character he hasn't been used much.

Honestly, I regard Donald as being used in much the same manner as the old Uncle Scrooge comics, which is to say that he commonly crops up in the sidelines unless the story calls for his particular comedic style.

I think this is for the best. Too much Donald could easily become grating very quickly. On the other hand a random episode here and there with him playing a bigger role, such as the episodes with Storkules or the casino, are gold.

Donald was used the perfect amount in this last episode. He was also in the Episode where he fights the Beagles just the right amount. Like, a little goes a long way.

I don't disagree, but it would be nice if the creators had thought of that before featuring him so prominently.

Yeah, Donald is better in small spurts. I mean, he IS the character that we generally know the most about, considering his age as a property, and they've stuck pretty much to a T as to what makes him Donald.

Meanwhile, Scrooge, the nephews, Beakly, Webby, et al have a considerable amount of ground to cover because they've been changed to a greater or lesser degree.

Disney's role is to reorder the episodes' airing order at random, stop showing the show for months, then change the channel it airs on completely before continuing. They leave the writing to the writers.

Well to their credit this isnt a CN kill the show move its just that Disney XD was a mess and they had to basically relaunch the show on the home network which lead to the delays and such

...no, they don't. Like every network, they require advance look at scripts and can at the very least offer notes or mandate changes. Now, going by King Riptor's assumption that Disney is insistent enough to announce Donald as part of the show at the announcement and feature him prominently in the title sequence over the wishes of the show runners, why would they suddenly stop caring when they get script after script of no Donald or a quick joke of "oh, Donald's not here because he's stuck in a broom closet?" Especially when he's one of the company's most popular characters and Disney has famously been pretty protective of the Mickey Mouse gang?

No, it's much more likely that the creative team got permission to use Donald, earned Disney's trust enough to use one of their most treasured assets, and then realized after the fact that he's hard to shoehorn into most episodes.

I mean he has about 3 focused episodes so far and in two of them he is basically in a Donald duck short for the bulk of it( seriously the self suffcient boat and Gladstone race are basically shorts). This was the case in his classic DT cameos too. He generally got split up from the cast and shit happened to him.
Donald tends to dominate when given focus so I think they scaled him back purposefully then justified it in the story ( he doesnt want to adventure)

....so you're pretty much agreeing with me, other than when in the process he was scaled back.

Though I'd argue he was really only the focus in the Gladstone and Greek episodes... the entire cast featured prominently in the premiere, and in the rest of the episodes he was part of the B-plot or just had a cameo. Edit: come to think of it, other than those two episodes and the premiere, Donald's only been in the B-plot ONCE, in the Fun Zone episode. Man, they really haven't used Donald much.

(Also Donald was purposefully excluded from nearly the entire Duck Tales show other than exactly two of the many, many episodes)

If you're talking about Donald, he wasn't in the Egypt episode at all. Plus outside of the Pilot, Fun Zone, Gladstone and Greece episodes he literally only has a few seconds of screen time in all of the other episodes he appears in.

    Donald appearances that I remember

    Pilot
    Atlantis
    Fun Zone
    Casino
    Storkules

He also briefly appears in the Money Shark episode, I think. They steal his boat. There are probably a couple more like that, he's mentioned in the most recent episode and screams from behind a door but I don't think you can count that as an "appearance".

  • cloudeaglecloudeagle Registered User regular
Atlantis is part of the pilot. :P

I do like the cameos by characters that aren't really part of the a or b plots -- Webby and Beakley were well used to set up the McDuck Mansion Murder Mystery, for instance.
