Oh hey, I didn't see you there, got so excited by the first post. Congrats!

This will be the first Pax where I am hitting all the Omegathon events religiously. I didn't get a ticket for Monday, but that may need to change! So happy to cheer you guys on!

As a past omeganaut, here's the #1 piece of advice:

Practice the games! I have won so many rounds by the skin of my teeth because i played the game before hand, and had strats in mind.

Also, join the facebook group if you wanna talk to us old timers.

Haha, is PAX not where we go to make fools of ourselves?

None has made a larger self-fooling than me! I can't play mario for beans

However, for some, the crowd and the potential for winning is the true foe! Nerves and stage fright cause more losses than you think.

Yuppppp!!! I didn't realize Omegathon is twice a day! Does it last an hour each time? Two?

the times should be on the panel schedule, but generally each round is a little over an hour. Budget yourself a solid two though because you need to be there about 15 minutes before it starts, minimum, and you might want to decompress after :)

  • anifirebirdanifirebird Registered User regular
Yes definitely. :) I hadn't clicked on each individual listing, but when I do is where it shows 12:30-1:30 and such. I plan to be around that area by 12 and in the room by 12:15.

Also, IMNSHO, it's a cool show of solidarity to show up for the Omegathon events even if/after you've been eliminated.

more than that if it's VR. Just ask travis what a headache getting it set up correctly is.

    Anyone else been practicing?

not as much as I likely should, but at least a little nightly of all of them.

Same. I just fired up Burnout 3 last night. I forgot just how strong those original Xbox triggers are.

  • ClannMorganClannMorgan Registered User regular
Yeah, I haven’t had much time to commit to practice. Ugh!

Yeah, I haven’t had much time to commit to practice. Ugh!

Put enough time into each game to get a solid understanding of the fundamentals of the game. How to get higher scores, break the system, or otherwise maximize your effort.
When we were playing Robo Recall, other players did not do well because they didn't move to collect the chips/took damage, which reduced their score. Knowing you get bonus points for grabbing a dude and blowing his skull off with a shotgun was how Steve took 1st that game. I took second(?) by knowing that movement, grappling, and hand to hand are better at score builds.
Knowing things like this about the games you're playing will give you the edge you need to avoid the cut.

Here's what I got for your games:

Taboo - Know quick word associations. It's really the only way you're going to get the other player to say what you need. EX: if the word is cat, but you can't say meow or whiskers, try nya, bag, "villain from rescue rangers" or felix the ___

Starwhal - It's deceptively difficult to protect yourself in this game. focus instead on keeping momentum and never staying still. Aim for the exposed bellies of those who cannot keep moving, and try to keep your heart against the ground. Wedging under someone slower than you can sometimes get you a nick on their heartspot. (i recommend practice of this, the game is super floaty. Not in a good way)

Gang beasts - the environment here is ultra dangerous. Keep off of floors that are tiled, and know that breaking cords and walls is possible. To toss someone, hold punch, and then hold Y to lift them. Spin in place and release. Try to avoid fighting early on if possible, as your knockouts get longer the more you get hit.

Burnout - Highly likely to be crash score mode. I always found that obstructing both lanes of traffic got the most damage points, but there's often side areas full of canisters or high value things to explode. Cuase a chain reaction, and use your explosion after touch to bring the chain to those areas if possible.

Mario tennis aces - I haven't played this, but I'm told you can win by killing your opponent.

Final round - your true opponent is freaking out on the main stage. Be chill. I was defeated by my own neurosis twice.

It looks like only Starwhal, Burnout, Aces, and the final will be streamed.

Starwhal is going to be so entertaining to have streamed as its such a gong-show!
