I liked... Black? Where you had a rival from home who chased your shadow and also you had a different rival who was like "Pokemon fighting is bad... I will prove it to you via the method of Pokemon fighting." Hau seems likes a silly goober, but I suppose some would prefer that. To me, I like the sneering "smell ya later" type who will make me happy to crush him. Beating Hau in that first fight was like kicking a puppy (or a kitty, since he got the fire starter).

Is it bad that I kinda miss the days when the weekly list of new Switch games was short? I would look up each one to see if it was something worth checking out. Now the list is always so long, so I just assume all the games are shit and move on.

The exact boat I'm on. Anything that's actually good will likely get talked about in the forums but I'm sure there's probably a few hidden gems that would have done better if they weren't surrounded by all-but-literal garbage.
In my mind, Hardway Party involves two professional wrestlers taking turns punching each other in the head, and the first one to draw blood wins. I'm just going to be preemptively disappointed since the actual game is never going to live up to that expectation.
So, proper mahjong - not mahjong solitaire, which is the tile matching game most people think of when they hear the word - is a game sort of like gin rummy, normally played with four people and at least 16 hands per game. Each player starts with a fixed number of points, usually 25000, and wins and losses result in the points getting passed around the table. At the end of the game, the person with the highest number of points wins. There are a couple of 4-player mahjong games already on the Japanese eShop.
4-player mahjong games that can last for an hour or more don't translate well to an arcade format, where the operator wants some way to keep getting 100-yen coins out of you every few minutes, so arcade mahjong is a 2-player version, you vs. the CPU (almost invariably a cute girl), where CPU losses generally involve them removing clothing one piece at a time and player losses result in losing points until you drop below 0 and the game ends. If you somehow manage to run the CPU completely out of points, they take off any clothing they have left.
The stripping (mostly) went away once the Japanese PTA went on a puritanical tear about how video games were corrupting the youth of Japan in the mid-90s, after which point most of the games are just making the CPU players dress up in embarrassing outfits. The last console mahjong game I remember actually having nudity in it was a neogeo pocket game.
This is played for laughs in a lot of newer games. In "Idol Janshi Suchie-Pai IV", which was a PS2 game from 2007 or so, you meet a character from one of the original games, beat her at mahjong, and she starts to take off her clothes, at which point the other characters rush in and stop her, explaining that we don't do that kind of thing any more.
They're also generally played for "wins" rather than points, so you can do well at arcade mahjong even with really low-score winning hands. Though... since they are arcade games and really want to get more money out of the player, the CPU generally starts cheating like mad after a while and pulling just impossibly-high-scoring hands to run you out of points.
Anyway. I've been a fan of arcade mahjong since the Saturn and I am astonished that we're actually getting a console release of this game in this country.
The other eShop game I bought today was Kemono Friends Picross.
Kemono Friends is a very low-budget show that I'm pretty sure was originally designed as an educational show for kids. It's about a young girl wandering across a post-apocalyptic nature preserve, meeting anthropomorphized versions of all sorts of wild animals and befriending them as she tries to figure out exactly what kind of animal SHE is (they've never seen a human before and she has no memory from before waking up in the park). The story frequently cuts away to zoo personnel explaining the real-world characteristics of the animal she has just encountered, so it reminded me a lot of an animated version of those animal collectible cards that all the kids I knew growing up had. Every episode has a few moral lessons or safety lessons, it's pretty preachy if you look at it with a cynical eye.
It took on a life beyond the confines of a kids educational program and is quite popular, probably mostly because the character designs for the "Friends" are infinitely marketable.
The other eShop game I bought today was Kemono Friends Picross.

I've only done a half-dozen or so puzzles (out of 300), but it's a lot of fun. I probably wouldn't have bought a full game of just Picross if I wasn't fond of the license, mind you.
It looks like the biggest puzzles are 20x15 and I imagine those are going to take a while.
I'm really liking the sorts of things that are starting to show up on the eShop, there really is a diverse selection of games that I haven't seen on a Nintendo console since the original DS. I'm up to 24 games so far and I imagine that comparing it to any other person's Switch would be like looking at one of those charts where you have two huge circles with a tiny overlap in the middle.

Not THAT long, but yeah. Basically, the Kemono people commissioned an anime to promote their mobile game. But while the anime was in planning stages, the game crashed and burned. But the anime was still contracted, so it was made - it just had basically a few coins they found behind the couch for a budget because it was evidently born dead.
And then the anime, to everyone's surprise, became popular despite the animation being terrible, the models being samey (because they couldn't afford to have many character models, so every character in the series is one of like three models with added accessories), and the franchise being dead. From what my friends who have watched it tell me, it just has a simple earnestness to it that made it fun to watch despite being technically atrocious, adorable without being saccharine. It became a meme, and so now we have more games for the series instead of it being 100% dead.
So of course the parent company that owns the franchise did the obvious thing: fire the guys that made the anime that made people like the series and commission another anime by more famous, "proper" names. Multiple people in my friend circles are still real annoyed about that.

I played Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and thought it was just OK. Is it worth my time to check out the original or just skip it?
The main difference in the original is that it's not divided into chapters/missions so it's more focused on exploring. If you liked the original Resident Evil games it's kind of like those (running into locked doors and backtracking for keys) but the actual gameplay is pretty similar to Dark Moon.

4-player mahjong games that can last for an hour or more don't translate well to an arcade format, where the operator wants some way to keep getting 100-yen coins out of you every few minutes, so arcade mahjong is a 2-player version, you vs. the CPU (almost invariably a cute girl), where CPU losses generally involve them removing clothing one piece at a time and player losses result in losing points until you drop below 0 and the game ends. If you somehow manage to run the CPU completely out of points, they take off any clothing they have left.
The stripping (mostly) went away once the Japanese PTA went on a puritanical tear about how video games were corrupting the youth of Japan in the mid-90s, after which point most of the games are just making the CPU players dress up in embarrassing outfits. The last console mahjong game I remember actually having nudity in it was a neogeo pocket game.
They're also generally played for "wins" rather than points, so you can do well at arcade mahjong even with really low-score winning hands. Though... since they are arcade games and really want to get more money out of the player, the CPU generally starts cheating like mad after a while and pulling just impossibly-high-scoring hands to run you out of points.
Anyway. I've been a fan of arcade mahjong since the Saturn and I am astonished that we're actually getting a console release of this game in this country.
Kemono Friends is a very low-budget show that I'm pretty sure was originally designed as an educational show for kids. It's about a young girl wandering across a post-apocalyptic nature preserve, meeting anthropomorphized versions of all sorts of wild animals and befriending them as she tries to figure out exactly what kind of animal SHE is (they've never seen a human before and she has no memory from before waking up in the park). The story frequently cuts away to zoo personnel explaining the real-world characteristics of the animal she has just encountered, so it reminded me a lot of an animated version of those animal collectible cards that all the kids I knew growing up had. Every episode has a few moral lessons or safety lessons, it's pretty preachy if you look at it with a cynical eye.
It took on a life beyond the confines of a kids educational program and is quite popular, probably mostly because the character designs for the "Friends" are infinitely marketable.
Anyway. This game is that, only in Picross form.

I've only done a half-dozen or so puzzles (out of 300), but it's a lot of fun. I probably wouldn't have bought a full game of just Picross if I wasn't fond of the license, mind you.
It looks like the biggest puzzles are 20x15 and I imagine those are going to take a while.
I'm really liking the sorts of things that are starting to show up on the eShop, there really is a diverse selection of games that I haven't seen on a Nintendo console since the original DS. I'm up to 24 games so far and I imagine that comparing it to any other person's Switch would be like looking at one of those charts where you have two huge circles with a tiny overlap in the middle.

Not THAT long, but yeah. Basically, the Kemono people commissioned an anime to promote their mobile game. But while the anime was in planning stages, the game crashed and burned. But the anime was still contracted, so it was made - it just had basically a few coins they found behind the couch for a budget because it was evidently born dead.
And then the anime, to everyone's surprise, became popular despite the animation being terrible, the models being samey (because they couldn't afford to have many character models, so every character in the series is one of like three models with added accessories), and the franchise being dead. From what my friends who have watched it tell me, it just has a simple earnestness to it that made it fun to watch despite being technically atrocious, adorable without being saccharine. It became a meme, and so now we have more games for the series instead of it being 100% dead.
So of course the parent company that owns the franchise did the obvious thing: fire the guys that made the anime that made people like the series and commission another anime by more famous, "proper" names. Multiple people in my friend circles are still real annoyed about that.

The main difference in the original is that it's not divided into chapters/missions so it's more focused on exploring. If you liked the original Resident Evil games it's kind of like those (running into locked doors and backtracking for keys) but the actual gameplay is pretty similar to Dark Moon.
