What will be really tough is providing interesting interactions for exterminators, devouring swarms, purifiers, etc.
The military side is fun but a little shallow; it would be really neat if you could use espionage mechanics to disrupt alliances, have more complex ways to threaten, extort, or subordinate other empires, set up proxy wars to weaken enemies for your attack, etc.
Purifiers could still have internal politics to deal with, and I'm sure there are some interesting internal problems for hive minds and machines (drones gaining sentience and rebelling because of some disruption to the hive mind, a telepathic disease or system corruption when the network grows too large, tailored midgame or endgame crisis stuff)
No diplomatic options for purifiers, exterminators, assimilators and swarms is a feature, not a bug.
I feel like it's the same for internal politics for hive minds and machine empires, but I really do hope these change make the internal *management* of those kinda of empiresmore unique as well.

I could see diplomacy in the form of espionage and propaganda. Wear a representative of the alien species like a meatsuit and pretend that you are reasonable. Buy off alien leaders via proxies to weaken their willingness to go to war with you. Infiltrate governments and militaries with drones. Create a cult that worships you as gods and causes a civil war. Pull all the shit the Tyrranids do in WH40K.
One of my favorite Stellaris playthroughs was as the Fanatic Egalitarian/Materialist Socialist States of Earth. They even had to the robo-hammer-'n'-sickle logo on a completely red background.
And I guess I'm gonna take 'em out for a spin again once the patch drops (with a few tweaks).
They confirmed on FB the console version would launch at 1.7 with the Utopia, Leviathans and Plantoids DLC.
Thats... odd. Given the massive changes in 2.0 I'd figure they would start there.
Yeah, there's a bit of complaining that they're going to drop them in on 1.7, then quickly push in the 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2 changes and it's just going to be too much too fast. Paradox said they had to start somewhere and settled on 1.7, which mostly tells me the development on this started in earnest back then, then they stuck with a static 1.7 for development reasons while the PC game progressed quickly beyond it.
EDIT: Man, this update is just starting to feel like they're getting way too granular with this stuff. Especially given I didn't have huge issues with the planetary population stuff that already exists. (Like, there's other areas I'd MUCH rather have them work on.)

It still seems like good groundwork for more intricate diplo/espionage stuff. Like that strata thing.
Disabling a "ruler" sector would now have a knock on effect of unemploying those entitled jerks, who will then plot treasonously until they're forced to accept work below their station; presenting further opportunities to encourage revolution.
And since police now exist, so exists a system where you could pay off the local constabulary to look the other way, or actively support you. Looking forward to more on social dynamics next week. (Stability, Happiness, and Crime)

I think it's great. The domestic side has always been kind of tedious and different types of empires didn't feel very distinct.
While racing light mechs, your Urbanmech comes in second place, but only because it ran out of ammo.
So, I got this game a few days ago thanks to this thread. I love it. It's everything I wanted out of games like Sins of a Solar Empire and Homeworld.
I like the new planetary system. Right now it's micro-heavy, but none of the choices have real impact.
Politics Wishlist:
1. Different kinds of federations/alliances. We should be able to change the rules of a federation. Like, how often the leadership changes (or if it changes at all), or restricting membership to certain ethics. Also, there should be a way to combine a federation into one polity the same as integrating a protectorate/vassal. This should take a lot of influence/etc, but it'd be cool to forge actual supernations to rival Fallen Empires or Crises.
2. Espionage. Imagine spying on another empire to steal technology, funneling resources to slave rebellions, or encouraging political factions who are in line with your goals. Conversely, imagine event chains/research quests to hunt spies. This should also directly impact diplomacy- a huge malus if your spies are discovered, a huge bonus if they uncover something the other side desperately wants.
3. Factions that respond to what your empire encounters. If you start of as a militaristic xenophobe, but the first aliens you encounter are spiritualist fanatic pacifists, that should be reflected in your internal politics. There should also be a regional element to it. Using the projected changes in Le Guin, it makes sense that a research-focused city world would have entirely different politics than an agri-world with one town.
Warfare Wishlist:
1. Espionage. We should be able to do stuff like sabotaging a citadel ahead of an invasion fleet, or uncovering plans to build a colossus.
2. Piracy. Right now, pirates are just an annoyance. It'd be cool if we could hire them to harass enemy trade. There should also be a political element to it as well- nobody's going to have kind things to say about a government that can't keep them safe.
3. Revamping combat to encourage divergent tactics. The rock-paper-scissors element to weapons is cool, but it means that every empire fights in the same way. Maybe there could be military traits that gave bonuses to specific ship types or fighting styles. Like, a hive-mind would naturally tend towards zerg rushing, while others might favor carriers supported by point defense cruisers.
Anyway, thanks for introducing me to this amazing game!

Is there a way to ensure a particular empire gets populated into your game? (Like if, say, you wanted a nemesis empire)

There's an icon you can click basically any time next to custom empires to make it so they never, sometimes, or always appear. You can't use it for default empires, though.

Oh rad! I'll have to remember that.
Kinda want to make some Autobot and Decepticon factions.
Reading reviews on steam for this is odd. Downvotes with huge reviews based entirely on upcoming changes...that no one has played. There's a lot of these.
A player who plays as a war monger...who hated the game because that impacted his social interactions with other factions. And got him ganged up and defeated every time.

Not uncommon. Apocalypse had massive negative reviews for what they did with 2.0. Lots of people were upset enough to try to tank the expansions sales as though that would bring back pre-2.0.
Stellaris community is passionate, I'll give it that.

I doubt they are playing a legal version of the game then, or if they refund does your profile track the hours played before the refund? hmm.. I see a lot of that too, some people don't take enough time to understand the game
you are only allowed 2hrs before you cant return a game on steam. most games anymore sink that with an incredible learning curve or a character(empire) creator, and stellaris has both.
With the starport and hyperspace changes now, you can do a warmonger empire and not be ganged up on immediately. But you have to setup really defensive.

Short version: Dystopian empires where the masses live in horrific conditions kept under control by an authoritarian police state where the higher classes live in opulence are now possible.

I just came back to this game and it’s almost unrecognizable from the last time I played it, which was still like 6 months out from the base release.
It’s a bit jarring but kudos to them for trying new stuff and trying to keep a single player game fresh well after its release.
I’m trying something a bit different for me, a race of warmongering religious fanatic lizards. With horns. It’s a bit weird being aggressive when you’re confined to pretty specific hyperspace routes.

Should I restart and be way more aggressive?

Stellaris coming to PS4/XBOne
Hopefully it results in a bunch of late-game performance fixes getting backported to the PC version, because the console CPUs are craaaaaaap.
Ah yes, the midgame.
Shit, man.
It'll be interesting to see if curated mod support makes it to Xbox. Or even Playstation.
Wonder if this is what 2.2 is leading towards, or if we're getting new content on PC's as well.

Cool... but let's see if we can top "Agri-world"
I vote for "Space Gulag."

"Planet Monsanto"
Made me wonder: Will these be per-empire custom name sets, I hope?
