I'm so silly. I'm too used to the registration button being next to the Log In button.

Wouldn't putting in one of those "Inert the characters in that picture into this field: " things help reduce spam-bots?

One of the major issues was that in the first Britney Porn thread, it had, like, two or three pages of posts, yet not one person had bothered to PM a mod. Maybe there wasn't anyone from G&T on, but I guarantee you that at least one of us was on, and not one of the wankers who posted in it bothered to PM us. So, yeah, that was one of the things that brought around this rule; not only were they not directing mods to it, but they were keeping it at the top of the page, with a pornographic image in it.

    That is the harm.
I agree entirely; I want to make that clear. My only concern is that I hope that the mods realise that the example you cited (the Britney porn thread) wasn't entirely perpetrated by G&Ters. There were plenty of people from other subforums whom came in to "join the fun", so to speak. I just hope that this one incident isn't viewed as "G&T acting like douches" and resulting in G&T being punished for it. I'd rather it be a case of "Random people acting like douches". :)

Apparently, we should change the title of this sub-forum to "we can't integrate any of the php anti-spammer scripts into the forums as they are now because of the way it's patched together."

That might be a little long, though.

Y'know, when K said that stuff about not posting off-topic shit below the line, he didn't mean just on the rest of that page.

If you guys are wondering why we can never seriously talk about anything having to do with G&T, that's the reason, right there.

    Next off-topic post gets a temp-ban.

Frankly I think the reason that we can never seriously talk about anything having to do with G&T is because the mods circle the wagons and turn into raging assholes whenever anyone questions anything they do, with a few notable exceptions.

Well, I don't know about the rest of the mods, but I don't "turn into" anything when people question what I/we do. I'm pretty much a full-time raging asshole.

However, if you have questions that you feel have not been answered, please, feel free to ask them in a constructive fashion, and I will endeavor to give you the best answer I am able.

It might be because this is a touchy subject with a lot of us, so we joke about it.

But on the topic at hand, threads like the Britney Porn thread SHOULD be punished for no one PMing a mod. That kind of shit is against the rules of ANY forum not dedicated to porn 9 times outta 10.

But any old thread? Why just declare it "Stillborn" and keep posting? That leaves the opportunity for someone to post in it 6 months down and bump it to the first page for kicks, or whatever.

I don't see the harm in posting in stillborn/spam threads. They are going to be locked eventually anyway, right?

Most likely. However, repeatedly bumping them to the top isn't doing anyone any favors. And I don't see why someone would hunt through page 18 six months down the line in order to post in a retarded thread.

No one would do that, right? Or am I setting too high a bar, here?

It's one of the fundamental points ethics and morals, period. Regardless of enforcement, people should do good things, and shouldn't do bad things. Without enforcement, do they? Not generally.

Anyhow, that is more off-topic than I'd like to be. Does anyone have anything constructive and/or pertinent to add?

What about that image-check thing other sites use as an anti-spam countermeasure? Would it be possible to implement that into the registration process?

It is entirely possible that the reason we have so many spammers in G&T is that they have some kind of automated system which works out targets based on how many replies spam threads get. I don't think this is outside the bounds of possibility, certainly.

And if this is indeed the case, then all you fuckers with no goddamn self-restraint are the CAUSE of all this shit.

unless they have some way of getting into PA's servers, I doubt that is anywhere close to "possible", unless you count sitting bob from accounting down to watch the replies wrack up.

They have a piece of software that can navigate the registration process and then make an almost-coherent post. I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility that it keeps an eye on the "replies" and "views" counters on the forum page.

I understand the whole "captcha scripts are too complex" thing, but how hard would it be to add a checkbox to the bottom of of the registration screen saying "I AM A SPAMBOT, PLEASE DELETE THIS APPLICATION (Legit users uncheck this)", have it checked by default and have anything submitted while this is ticked be ignored? I mean, I know it'd be easy to work around, but if we're the only forum on the net using it, how likely is it that the widely-used bot programs will be coded to uncheck it any time soon?

To use common sense and to be respectful? That it's better to follow rules that exist for the good of the community than not? I have no idea, but I have a feeling that it's a "fundamental point" behind lots of shit.

If people would follow rules without any enforcement, there wouldn't be any rules in the first place. The mere existence of the rules proves that people won't follow them.

This has turned into some Debate and Discourse right here.
As a long time G&Ter I must say it always bothered me when people bumped threads which really, really didn't have any purpose being in G&T. It is one thing to bump a bad thread by informing the poster the thread is a duplicate, pointing them to another thread with the information, or asking them to clean up the OP but it is another case all together when people are bumping spam threads, especially ones with porn in them. Don't do it! You know you shouldn't, there isn't any reason to do it. Everyone bitches about how much they hate spam but then they post in those same threads which guarantees they will stay towards the top of the forum until a mod comes in and locks it. It reminds me of kids who scratch at mosquito bites.
