Having flash backs to playing a necromunda campaign. My one close combat dude lost a leg in the first fight (I remodeled him to be using a crutch) and spent the next few months hobbling toward the enemy until his side won or bottled out.

edit- I think the same dude also got horribly scarred, meaning he caused fear. As soon as he (finally) got close to the enemy they'd get frightened and run away

I had a similar thing happen in Gorkamorka.

I had a dude that lost an eye. Sent him to the Mad Doc, ol Bonesaw must have got distracted and instead of giving him a cool bionik eye he swapped out his legs for mechanical ones.

Ok, fuck it, let's roll with it. Next fight he dives off a truck to tackle a Nob and gets his arm ripped off. Back to the mad doc and he not only replaces the missing arm with a big blade but swaps out the other one with a power klaw. At this point he's more metal than Ork, and I decided he was going to challenge da Boss to be the new Nob. Gorkamorka had rules for that, you literally had to do an arena fight.

Second round of the brawl, he gets his head ripped off by the Boss.

Bonesaw didn't quite have much he could do about that one, unfortunately.

I only kind of half pay attention to this stuff but as I understand it they have a new CEO who's trying mightily to turn the ship around. They're bringing out new versions of all their beloved old boardgames, they've gone from never licensing video games to lending their IP to any developer with two nickels and a copy of Unity, they're advancing the metaplot of 40K for the first time in, like, decades.

As I say, I'm only half-paying attention to this, so someone might come along and be like "but Jacob, none of that excuses the fact that they still feed women and interns to the giant snake god at their corporate HQ", but at a casual level it sure seems like there's a lot more excitement around 40K and GW in general than I've seen in years and years.

That makes me really happy to hear. I've had a fondness for Warhammer Fantasy and 40K for, oh my god more than 20 years now what happened, but I always found the properties and the company kind of intimidating (let alone the fanbase which can be kind of ... yikes sometimes). Very cool to see the efforts paying off for them.

I would be excited about Kill Team if I could have people to play it with regularly. Being able to play with only a small squad of my Chaos Pretty Marines would be satisfying in the Necromunda way I think.

This is, as far as I'm concerned, one of the five or ten very best RPGs ever made and possibly the best RPG adaptation of a fictional property. Every page drips with theme. If you play this and aren't bodily transported to a world of hairy feet and adventure I'll give you your money back.

    Good news!

The gladiator died! But luckily, having rolled 8, they instead woke up after the fight with a gnarly scar, indebted to two tricky fey spirits.

Previously on Glory Hearts, the rebels, joined by the Bowatchese, become lost deep in the heart of a sandstorm and spot a figure hovering in the air!

It turns out to be a Crownag! A kind of shape-shifting person, who found and mended a "Gigan", an huge clockwork machine. This one can create tremendous winds!

The archer's arrows kept getting blown away, and as the rebels advance they are ambushed by golems made of sand and stone. Some are quick and slink back into the sand, others are huge with seemingly impenetrable hides.

Above the Crownag would attack with a sling between changing form from man to monster to a swift bird, darting between the heroes, mocking them all the while. The thief got a good hit in, and the golems momentarily dropped prone. The thief called for everyone to focus their attack on the sneaky bugger, and soon had them retreating to the Gigan.

Standing behind a shielded platform on the Gigan, then directed it to blow the party away. In a display of fantastic athletes the gladiator lept from rock golem to rock golem, using them as cover from the wind, and eventually clawed their way to the leg of the Gigan.

The gladiator tore the ancient machines leg off and fell back, the full weight of the Gigan smashing into her, trapping her underneath! (with a barbarian move "Spend courage to: topple and shatter—rip from the earth—grasp by the horns.")

The direction of the wind changed with the fall, and the rebels used this time to sprint to the Crownag. The astrologer knocked them out with a flying kick to the head.

Still unconscious, the Crownag changed into a bird again. It such a weak state, and one mysteriously convenient for being carried, they decide to take them back to the city for questioning.

It turns out the ex-bandit has a knack with mechanics, and before they leave they shut down the Gigan, and he reports that it was running on a weird fuel he's never seen before, and its about to run out.

Okay, I'll snip the return journey, but needless to say they're back in the city, and next up is a rematch against the very people they've just fought alongside. Should be tense!

After that they're to find out why the crow bro was trying to harm the city, and just why shape-shifters are so rare...

I would like some help shaping my barbarian's personality a little better.

I've been basically playing him like tormund giantsbane so far, except maybe a little more self centered and a little more cunning/deceptive maybe even a tad conceited given my bonkers high stats and the chaotic neutral alignment. he's really only interested in making sure that his tribes name (name TBD) goes down in history forever by doing amazing feats.

    Anyone got any more ideas?

Oh I also imagine his battle stance is basically frieza's, daring the enemy to attack, which is good because when I get his heroforge mini I have him in that pose basically. (though the arms are not as far back.)

If he wants to make sure his tribes name goes down in history I would start trying to think of things that define the clan as unique. Customary greetings, superstitions around luck, how to treat guests, strangers, etc. Have him act within the accordance of the tradition of his tribe, which he values if he wants their name to become known.

    Something like that.

I'd lean towards making them all about strength and the recognition of it I guess. but I don't want to run into the trap of making them basically klingon or some kinda proto fascists. he's just kinda a dick, not evil for one, and the warrior people thing seems a bit played.

I guess it could be a broader definition of strength? about the tribe nurturing individual talent so that everyone can contribute in a way that's unique and personal?

Still he's the last of his tribe. with the setting being at the early emergence of personal firearms I figure maybe desire for minerals to make gunpowder drove some neighboring kingdom to displace and destroy their way of life. I guess he just wants to prove to any other surviving tribes that though they are being supplanted by civilization they don't have to give up all of their identity.

I dunno about the other minor details though.

I mean, they've been bringing back all of their other specialist game lines, including ones which don't overlap with other miniature lines. They brought back Blood Bowl, and there have been rumors they would bring back Titanicus and now Titanicus has been released, so the rumors about BFG are at least not unreasonable. BFG was also always very popular. Some rumors I've heard is that it'll be Horus Heresy era this time, and there will be base stuff from GW with upgrades from Forgeworld like Necromunda which... I am less enthused about. I'd want an up to date setting to start with and I'm dubious of forgeworld given their incredibly high prices.

Cultural identity is often tied to language (hence why imperialists and colonisers always seek to suppress/demean native languages). Have them be very proud of their mother tongue, to the point of constantly using and trying to teach the rest of the party words that don't have a common analogue (eg. schadenfreude).

That way you can reflect their tribe's unique point of view and play up what is important in their culture.

I think players can construct certain kinds of conflict intentionally and make it work, but in practice it’s usually just the person next to you fucking with you incessantly while going “hey it’s what my chaotic evil kender cleric’s religion would tell them to do”

And you’re like why am I even bothering

Also if players are constructing a conflict I would want have a sense of where it’s going — is there an end state or resolution pending at some logical point

This is a good idea, maybe I can figure out how to make it work, I dunno how yet though.

I know he's a human who speaks common and elvish, maybe I can ask the dm about also having some kind of tribal language that shares roots with both common and elvish. Could also say his tribe had close relationships with tribes of wood elves and even some intermarriage. So maybe the tribe are usually living around creek beds in forested areas.

As far as his individual personality goes, again I think he's kinda a self important dink, and maybe being off on his own on a counter attack raid against the invaders is why he is the only known survivor of the final massacre of his people by their neighboring kingdom. He feels really guilty about it maybe, and is trying to make it up to them in spirit by inspiring others to recognize their culture and his talents through honestly reckless feats (or die trying) along the lines of the labors of Heracles.

I want my character's perception of the world to get darker, like it suddenly turning to dusk, and for him to see the roots, weeds, ect.. start pulling his spirit out of his body towards the ground.

I also want him to spot an arch-fey who will be inviting him to dance eternally in the Twilight Forest, for failing to pay back his debt.

My experience is that it's typically a result of a player who doesn't understand how to capture spotlight time organically or they're only really interested in conflict as their avenue to role-playing. Sometimes it's both because they've gone years in that rut and no longer have any interest in changing.

It's a cheap and easy way to snag the spotlight; I have a player who will do it whenever he feels like his particular story lines are being ignored. Which is frequently because he's really awful at setting goals that are party-friendly.

I couldn't sleep yesterday and read through my backer copy of Scion 2E.

Scion 2E is pretty cool! One really neat thing that they did was offer different origins for PCs.

So you can be Born, which is the classic child of a god story.

You can also be Created, formed by the will of a god, Chosen by a god to be their scion regardless of parentage, or Incarnated, an avatar of a god that was sundered when the god was killed, or a reincarnated Hero or Demigod seeking to reclaim their power.

And there's even support for just playing a straight up mythical creature, in case you wanna be a centaur or some shit.

It's very very cool, and way better researched, less racist, and MUCH less sexist than the original books. Highly recommend.

Mechanically it's stripped down, very light compared to other Story games, with an emphasis on narrative engagement mechanics. It plays well.

The primary issue it has is that those narrative engagement mechanics are going to trip your players up. My players took almost three months to figure out how to set deeds I can actually address more than one at a time. (After I actually took time to talk about it and explained how I was looking for linkage in their deeds.)
