Star Wars: The Mini... ing.
Probably all of us have seen the movies. Maybe we owned some action figures and still have them. A few of us play roleplaying games or wait in long lines. And a scant number of us are lost souls wandering through comic book shops and gaming stores... we have devolved into complete product whores. Thankfully, for those of us who have such a burning need for tiny plastic things, there is Wizards of the Coast... the pimps of our perverse addiction.
I probably use them more in association with the roleplaying game, but the minatures game itself is a good way to blow a few spare minutes... rather than talk to your friends, who you secretly detest. Search your feelings, you know it to be true.
Now, to anyone who puts minis together and paints them by hand, these all probably look like crap. They're molded plastic and the paint jobs aren't great... but speaking for myself, I probably couldn't make them look as good as this. I will probably try my hand at painting them one of these days but they're good enough for me right now. Someday I will go shithouse crazy and start cutting them up, customizing them and repainting them, but for now I shall merely collect and patiently await the erosion of my sanity.
Rules are a simplified version of regular d20. Positioning is important, because cover and distance and that sort of thing apply. The "mook" above costs 7 points to put in your squad. He can only hit something adjacent to him. His attack is 1d20+7, if it hits it does 10 damage. His defense (versus any kind of attack) is 15, and he has a measly 20 hit points. More advanced units can have force powers, command auras that grant other members of the squad additional abilities, that kinda thing.
The Revenge of the Sith starter set is pretty good and still easy enough to find. Probably what I like most about it is that the map is a fold-out board instead of just paper, and all my Saga Edition books fit into it perfectly! Truly I am a miserable and pathetic creature.
Another starter set out right now is a lot cheaper to get into and has Rebels and Imperials instead of Republic and Separatists. I also own this one because my soul is so corrupt.
There are several different sets of minis. The new one out is called "The Force Unleashed", pictured above. I mean, wow... a videogame, tabletop adventure path, miniatures and god-knows-what-else tie-in. Magnificent bastards, I tells ya.
All sets have a total of 60 different figures of different design and rarity. Try and get some very rare figures... go ahead and try! Well, you don't really have to wear your fingers down to the bone emptying pack after wallet-draining pack: Ebay is a pretty good resource for filling out a set or opportunistically picking up a large mixed set in the aftermath of someone else's tear-jerking intervention.
So, discuss or ask questions or post trades or whatever, guys. Or just mock those of us who participate in this horrific pastime.

I don't like randomized miniatures.
I am extra serious in my agreement about this.
I would play games like this if they weren't CCG's in miniature form.
At least the little fellows look neat enough, though.
I was considering doing exactly that when I first starting reading up on Saga, but the idea fell through a crack in my brians. Is eBay a good bet or do you have a site you'd recommend?
I, too, would like to know if there's anywhere aside from eBay one could pick up loads of commons on the cheap.
Does anyone know whether they've released any female Twi-Leks in the vein of Mission Vao? ie. Not a dancing girl or jedi and more scoundrelly? I'm having a hard time finding figs for my Sagas group. This and the lack of Ithorians is a big hindrance to us using characters that actually represent the players, and I'm anal like that.
can you slaughter bothans to gain information or just because?
This is why at some point I'm going to get into repainting and customizing... because a lot of them don't quite do it. If anyone has any advice for what kinda materials to use I'd be grateful.
Hope this helps:
Twi'Lek Bodyguard - Rebel Storm #58, Ithorian Scout - Rebel Storm #49, and Ithorian Commander - Alliance & Empire #10
If I was going to make a custom Twi'Lek female scoundrel, I'd probably start with:
Zabrak Fringer - Return of the Sith #55 or Iktotchi Tech Specialist - Return of the Sith #47
The Iktotchi already has two horns... someone who knew how to work with minis could probably make her look more like a Twi'Lek.
