Thought I added this musician to my spotify but it seems like I didn't! Found this song originally on PA but I didn't comment on it because I was catching up on a thread. Can't even remember what thread.
It was folk/singer songwriter, male. It was a love/mourning song for a boat. It was a tale about an explorer going north into the ice with the boat and it was lost or was destroyed maybe?

didn't think there would be others? Heck, there are others just by that artist. This one is too old for your criteria, but it's super good and makes me cry every single time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fhop5VuLDIQ
I don't know who wrote it, but there's a whole album in a similar style to Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald about the ships that sank on the Great Lakes in the Storm of 1913. I haven't heard them in years, though. Not as old as Fitzgerald, but probably still older than the criteria.
my personal music library is almost embarrassingly Ritter-rich
though in my defense, most of his albums are very distinct from each other!
Same. I celebrate his entire collection and have seen him in concert so many times. He is like the only person I go to see at this point. Amazing live.
Since someone brought up his darker stuff I am gonna throw out my theory on sermon on the rocks.
It's totally about a serial killer/fsmilly member of a killer. It gets told from perspective of the killer, relatives and victims

Song I'm trying to remember is modern, I would think sometime since 2010, but at the very least post 2000

edit: I may have been the person who posted it before, come to think of it.
I spent a good portion of today trying to figure out the right terms to Google to find that

Also really liked this one - seems I like his 'darker' songs or story songs

He's also super fucking good.
Sermon on the mountain rocks is one of my favorite records.

One of my favourite songs.
Sermon on the Rocks is making it's way up into one of my favorite albums ever
edit: he reminds me of a more upbeat Justin Townes Earle (musically if not lyrically)
edit2: like if Justin Townes Earle and Paul Simon had a baby
