I'm loving the little dances the party members do, if they get dazzled. Doing the Carlton makes perfect sense for the Hero.

Oh I'm well aware that it's been a thing in the history of the game. It's just a thing that I've never liked.

Here's a mob that has a 1/1000 chance to spawn. Each turn it takes is another 25% chance to flee.

    Good luck!

Well, it's also a monster with a boatload of exp, and just 2 or 3 kills will ratchet you ahead a significant amount on the leveling curve. So I'm ok with the gamble mechanic there.

It got bad in IX when some quests required metal slime kills. Or worse, metal slime kills using unorthodox abilities.

But if you only see one in a thousand fights.... You would already be overleveled by a significant amount.

In the middle of the Gallopolis main story right now, about to head off to face the Slayer of the Sands. The local sidequests kind of seem like a pain and the rewards don't look amazing so I'm putting them off for now.

Gallopolis's sidequests suck butts, but so far every other sidequest has been... generally okay?

I recommend revisiting Gallopolis's later. The Golden Globe one in particular is ANNOYING because it comes down to RNG whether or not it actually spawns, AAAAND it... has an OHKO spell that it may or may not cast, which may or may not hit. But on the plus side, guaranteed drop if you kill it. Definitely come back when you're stronger.

The other one is just a standard Pep Power one, Zoom back later once you've got the required party members in Pep then activate Wild Side and have Erik kill the Spitzfire, ez.

You'll get a bunch more of the "kill x, get drop" quests, but thankfully most of them won't require a rare spawn encounter. I think one involves killing a monster that only appears during rainy weather, though, so that's a little tricky.

When you're approaching Yggdrasil, there is a kill quest that involves a rare spawn appearing with its cousin type again. Thankfully, this area is also a potential hotbed of liquid metal slimes, so it makes grinding out the quest not so bad if you luck out a kill or three of those.

I'm pleasantly surprised by Veronica. I usually don't like the "kid" characters in JRPGs, and what they did with that trope was cool.

It's Serena I don't care about, she's boring. "Hi, I'm the nice healer girl!"

Maybe she gets better later, I'm only at the point where you gotta get Birdsong Nectar from the cave.

    Fffffffuuuuu...

There's a bullshit quest when you get to the 2nd Casino.

Win a jackpot at the Roulette table.

You not only have to succeed at getting the one correct number out of 36, it also has to be the one highlighted by the Jackpot marker at the top of the wheel.

EDIT: Did it. Won it. Only took about an hour. :p

Okay, Sylvando's growing on me. Between him being secretly the most mature person in the room and the fun he had in the MMA town, especially.

And I somehow got onto a slime quest slot machine that let me kill six bosses in a row, so the casino is managable.

Best way to Casino that I've seen so far has been:

    - Buy 200 Tokens or so to start
    - Play Poker, Double or Nothing a few times, stop at 800 to be safe
    - Get a few thousand Tokens, zone in/out to autosave, and then go dump into Slots (not Slime Quest)

Basically you either spend all your Tokens and reload your autosave, or you'll win big big big. I ended up going from ~5000 to 20000 or so.

Slime Quest seems pretty inefficient. Poker might be better than Slots once you have access to the 100 Token table.

Slime Quest seems pretty inefficient. Poker might be better than Slots once you have access to the 100 Token table.

Slime Quest can do the job, but requires you spend tokens going the full distance to get into Slime Time, where you'll finally come out ahead unless you get lucky with the skill slot stops. Even when I think I'm timing my button presses right, it's like the game knows I'm tapping a fraction of a second too early and will push the 7 or gem slime out of the visible area anyway. Even with Slime Time though, I didn't hit big jackpots like the kind you see with 6+ rounds of double or nothing, or about half an hour with regular slots.

Once you get the 100 token table access, Poker will edge out over Slots, but that's only if you like to really press your luck. Slots is still the brain dead way to achieve 100k+ tokens.

    2nd Casino spoilers:
When you first get to the casino, it's rigged. The token shop sells a lot of ?????? items at exorbitant prices, and they're really all just medical herbs, cypress sticks, and horse manures. I did one single spin at the 100 slots and it forced Metal Time on me. So I did 10 spins of that and hit 77777 jackpots 3 times. Once you go upstairs to the VIP area where the roulette table is, you'll trigger the event sequence that turns the casino back into a proper gambling establishment, and any of those tokens you earned when the games were rigged will disappear.

Roulette has a 200 token table, and it's actually really easy to win and come out ahead. If you're smart about your play, you can make good bank with a 33% win rate, and if you lose too many times, you can reset to your last autosave. There is a quest here that mandates you win a jackpot on a roulette table, which you might as well do at the 200 table because it guarantees you'll get 1 million tokens. Just put 200 on every number, including every vertical line between the numbers (but not the horizontal lines), and put 200 on the treasure chest (which serves as the 00) and one each on the 3 lines at the end. You should spend about 14600 tokens per play, but any win that isn't 1, 2, 3, 34, 35, 36 or the chest will see you get 15000 in return, so you always come out ahead and keep trying for the Jackpot.

It's time consuming, but worth it in the end as the 2nd casino has new items to buy, including the Gingham Whip at 750,000 tokens.

Yep, I just assumed they wouldn't be dual wield-able and I was already planning on using them. Now that I know this it is definitely my focus to get him set up with 2 because that is god damn awesome.

Also that makes him very interesting build wise because even if you want him to focus on boomerangs he will want skills from all of his trees. DW is in daggers and the improved DW is in swords.

Dual-wield in this game is a huge deal. Sacrificing the defense is worth it. Dual-wielding Falcon Blades has been all my MC has done since I've had the ability which makes him a single-target monster, but also, with a second weapon in hand, skills like Dragon Slash and even Gigaslash have a second hit component to them at 50% damage of the main hand. They seem to have taken a D&D approach to this though, and the 2nd hit is only the base attack, with no modifiers.

Like, if Gigaslash does 1.75x damage, and I normally do 100 damage against an enemy with my mainhand damage, then I'll do 175 for the first hit, but only 50 for the second.

2H weapons won't outpace dual-wielding Falcon Blades/Falcon-Knife Earrings until you get deep into the MC's Greatsword line. Erik is built to be the dual-wield king no matter which weapon type, so just go with what you like. Sylvando is flexible, but his best moves seem to be his Showmanship line, which don't benefit from dual-wielding (no extra hit for carrying an off-hand). Whips seems to be a good line for him once you get the best whip in the game because it upgrades from hitting a group of enemies to all enemies like boomerangs.
Hendrik can be a sword or greatsword/axe user. I haven't gone deep enough into his GS/Axe lines. His Sword line is great with his ability to use a shield. Tanking is what he seems to be intended for, but you can flex him into muscle if you want. His Sword line not only has Falcon Slash (2-hit), but Gyrfalcon Slash (4-hit) and another 6-hit slash move. Oomphle him and that's an easy 600-700 damage per skill use. He doesn't have a lot of MP to sustain that level of output for long though.

Is there any sort of taunt or provoke ability? I might try to build the MC as a tank if there's away to ensure he takes the brunt of the damage. Otherwise I will probably switch to dual wield.

Are boomerangs that much better? I haven't even tried them yet. I was able to craft a Divine Dagger +2 for Erik so I've just been using that.

The character in the furthest left slot(first) will be targeted the most. The furthest right will be targeted the least.

And boomerangs are just AoE. Daggers are better single target damage. I just don't like switching weapons so I'm going all in on boomerangs for him. Not a gameplay thing just a flavor/personal choice. You don't need to min/max everything to get through the game. Just build things how you like them.

Noooot to my knowledge? But yeah as said, left-most slot is targeted more often.

MC does get Sword/GS stances, which increase your parry chance by a good bit.

I've been rocking GS since the skills seem quite a bit better and you get mUCH more attack power over Swords.

Yes. Ish. There is a skill called Forbearance which lets the user take hits that target other individuals. This also means any AoE hits will all stack on that one character, likely killing them off.
The MC doesn't get it though, as far as I know.

I liked how Rab put it. "Worse evils have been done for less good" or however the line was.

Though the whole situation I think has a bit of a plot hole. The way Vince puts it, he's been doing this for a while, a few tournaments at least. But the situation of the missing fighters seems like it only started recently?

Convenient plot holes and deus ex machinas. My first thought was that the cave to the spider was literally in the garden of the orphanage. The kids would probably have been okay because it seems like the spider only wanted strong bodies, but uhh, Vince. I know you're a surfer bro bonehead with good intentions, but even you could see this was a huge mistake.

Tournament organizers should've been screening him for drugs after his wins, clearly.

I'm actually enjoying letting the AI run my party in normal battles. It's faster, less work, and the party AI likely knows exact monster hp and resistances.

Make sure to set Veronica to "No Mercy." Otherwise she will sometimes cast Frizz one one guy (and not kill him) instead of casting Bang on 5 guys.

  • The WolfmanThe Wolfman Registered User regular
The change to how turn orders work kind of "broke" the AI, especially when it comes to healing. Old games had you punch in everyone's orders at the start of each turn, then they play out. Well if you set your party members to AI, they would instead "decide" their action when they took it. This would result in your healer curing status ailments that were just cast, or healing damage you just took. Actions impossible for a human player unless you just guessed, or casted that heal at the turn start when everybody already had full health.

I say "broke", but nothing is broken or changed at all. But old games felt like I was cheating in my favor. With the new turn order, AI is more just a "I'm lazy and don't wanna deal with it" option.

They do cheat when it comes to knowing enemy health though, yeah. Veronica will only melee if she somehow knows her pitiful attack will kill an enemy.

I you talk to people in the town before you enter the cave, they mention that fighters have been disappearing for several years, not just one year. It's just not part of the main dialogue. So they did think about that plot hole.

This game also lets you run past any and all enemies, and I love it. Makes the default difficulty level perfectly fine - I just run past most fights and go through the game under leveled.

Running past enemies also weirdly inverts the normal balance of combat/exploration time. Usually in an RPG I expect to spend most of my time in battles, but in this game it feels like battles are a welcome break from exploring the endless number of huge towns the game throws at you.

  • The WolfmanThe Wolfman Registered User regular
I'm amazed they tweaked the exp and gold gains to balance. I've also just been fighting almost the bare minimum, each new enemy per area at least, and I almost feel overleveled. I utterly destroyed the Tentacular boss. In slight fairness... I am also rocking a Platinum Greatsword I won from the casino, so that's certainly helped things. I nearly ran back into problems with the Phnom Nhom boss, but I squeaked that one by.

Gold is... well gold earned through battle is still pitiful. Sub 100 a fight when shit costs in the thousands. However, I saw the fun sized forge list, and how it tracks every +3 item you craft... even store bought items. And the screen made my brain itch in the oh so familiar not friendly way. So I've been crafting +3 items of everything available so far, and selling the junk. And this stuff sells for a pretty penny. Between buying the later gear and buying the perfection pearls needed, my cash flow has remained pretty stable so far.
