DC Thread! Streaming Service is live! Aquaman out in December! Comics, I guess!

BlankZoeBlankZoe Registered User regular
Alright I waited for a few days to see if anyone else wanted to but here's the DC Thread
cg0nqxslvdku.jpeg
DC Universe went live last week! It is DC's streaming service with past programming, original series and a large rotating selection of comics. Its 7.99 a month with a one week free trial.

Current highlights are remastered BTAS episodes, all of the DCAU (except the Zeta Project, good riddance), a lot of great obscure comics runs, Young Justice and Brave and the Bold and more! Titans, the first original programming, comes out in October and looks....like a show you can watch if you choose to.

Aquaman is out December 21st

https://youtu.be/go6GEIrcvFY
Shazam is out April 5th.

Notable comics stuff:

G. Willow Wilson is taking over Wonder Woman with Cary Nord in November, wanting to rebuild Diana's roots as a mythic hero.

jyz18980g39f.jpg
Martian Manhunter has a 12-issue miniseries from Steve Orlando and Riley Rossmo out in December, exploring his origins while attempting to solve a series of murders, in his detective identity, that appear to have a Martian connection.

Batman and the Outsiders is relaunching from Bryan Edward Hill and Dexter Soy in December. Featuring a primarily POC cast an a team designed to tackle societal problems Batman isnt properly equipped to deal with alone.

Kelly Sue DeConnick and Robson Rocha are taking over Aquaman in December, following a crossover with Justice League that will shake up the nature of Atlantis and leave Arthur with temporary amnesia on a mysterious island for wayward sea gods.

December solicits are out and the best surprise is that Blue Devil is showing up in Justice League Dark

It turns out that prior to joining JLD, Detective Chimp joined up with BD and tried to resurrect Nightmaster after he died in Metal

It did not go well and now the magical dimension that Nightmaster was king of is overrun by the undead....and Bobo left Blue Devil to die there.

Blue Devil did not die and is now a very, very angry warlord.

Full cast/crew for the Joaquin Phoenix Joker origin film
"Principal photography has begun on Warner Bros. Pictures’ Joker, starring Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix in the title role, alongside Oscar winner Robert De Niro, and directed, produced and co-written by Oscar nominee Todd Phillips," Warner Bros. said in a press release.

"Joker centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.

"The film also stars Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Bill Camp (Red Sparrow, Molly’s Game), Frances Conroy (American Horror Story, Castle Rock), Brett Cullen (42, Narcos), Glenn Fleshler (Billions, Barry), Douglas Hodge (Red Sparrow, Penny Dreadful), Marc Maron (Maron, GLOW), Josh Pais (Motherless Brooklyn, Going in Style), and Shea Whigham (First Man, Kong: Skull Island).

"Phillips (The Hangover trilogy) directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with writer Scott Silver (The Fighter), based on characters from DC. The film is being produced by Phillips and Bradley Cooper under their Joint Effort banner, and Emma Tillinger Koskoff. It is executive produced by Richard Baratta, Joseph Garner and Bruce Berman.

"Behind the scenes, Phillips is joined by director of photography Lawrence Sher (upcoming Godzilla: King of the Monsters, The Hangover trilogy), production designer Mark Friedberg (Selma, The Amazing Spider-Man 2), editor Jeff Groth (War Dogs, The Hangover Part III), and Oscar-winning costume designer Mark Bridges (Phantom Thread, The Artist).

So people don't get confused, this is the first film under the label of Elseworlds, and has nothing to do with previous DCEU films which is now called World of DC

So Mister Miracle threw a MASSIVE curveball in the penultimate issue
The issue has Scott and Barda meet with Darkseid and Desaad, culminating in Scott killing Darkseid via a knife forged out of Orion's bones and celebrating with Barda and Jake

Then Desaad takes off his hood and reveals he is actually Metron and congratulates Scott. "You have slain the devil. You have seen fear, embraced fear, mastered fear. You have seen love, embraced love, been mastered by love. You challenged the unchallenged. You dared the trap of death. And you escaped. And now it is time, my son. Time to look into the face of god. And hear your cheer, and take your bow. Where you are is not where you should be Scott Free."

    And then

    This
    tzTqeXm.jpg?1

The issue ends Jake, Scott and Barda starting at Metron while the narration says all will be revealed next issue.

This seems to be how King's insistence that the story is canon will shake out, despite all of the New God stuff and even the brief Booster/Beetle appearance not lining up with the current state of the DCU.

I'm not entirely sure but if I had to guess I think this has all been a test to see if Scott still had the will to live after his suicide attempt? I dont want it to just be erased because that is hacky and shitty, and I think King is better than that, but that's REAL interesting.

Also hey maybe dont talk about the content of the spread since I specifically spoilered it
Characters like GL, Nightwing, Diana. Etc. Showing up is a big deal so far the only appearances from non-New God characters was a very brief appearance from Beetle and Booster out of costume

    Miracle Talk
I think most of it looks quite good, but I do not like its Superman or Wonder Woman, which is kind of dragging it down for me as a whole

Specifically it's their necks - they don't have a strong chin divide because of the angle they're at, and their faces and necks seem to kind of be merging together

    Mr Miracle Spread.
I think its a refreshingly naturalistic look for a lot of the characters (especially the faces) versus the generally stoic and overly posed nature that spreads like that normally have.

Superman looks like someone attached a bust statue to an entirely separate torso

I agree most of it is good but theres some really odd stuff in there that looks like a weird perspective issue maybe or... I dont know, I really can't tell what's going on with the wonder woman especially

I think this is one of Gerards biggest strengths as an artist
He uses models very frequently, he has said he uses his baby son as a model for Jake sometimes, and his work always feels very authentic and real in terms of the heroes looking like actual people versus generic handsome supermodels
