So I have figured out that this boss has a neat mechanic, buried in ALL THE BULLSHIT

This boss is 100% scripted. And by that I mean he has a very specific order to the bullshit he uses. Making him “tired” skips the next thing in his bullshit order. You can use this to try and manipulate him and heal during easier shit and skip his super bullshit.

Of note you absolutely have to use skip on his scythe move (when he says I CAN DO ANYTHING!!!) or you have to dodge it twice.

Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

I managed to beat him without too many attempts, but that was going in knowing what to do to win, and I got extremely lucky. Was completely out of recovery items at the end and the whole party was low, so I probably couldn't have taken even one more attack.

Honestly not sure if knowing that I could skip certain attacks would have made things easier. There were a handful of attacks that I had a lot of difficulty avoiding (the scythe wasn't so bad at first, but it was ruthless at the end), but there was probably only one or two attacks in his entire set that I was consistent in avoiding.

I have only gotten to his final stage once, but

There are two attacks you WANT to see: The one that he starts of the battle with (and it's pumped up variations) and the I CAN DO ANYTHING one where he summons up diamonds from the bottom.

Both are some of the only ones that you can avoid 100% of the time. A lot of the others you can maneuver yourself into a situation where you have to take damage because of random bullshit.

To note, you CAN avoid the scythe with shocking clarity, but you have to be insanely good about where you start avoiding it and then move in a pretty specific circle to avoid it.

You can avoid all the damage on the carousels but that requires you to memorize the pattern that it goes in since it quickly swaps directions and it hard to keep the heart perfectly positioned.

You pretty much should be making him tired whenever possible except to hit or avoid certain attacks. The problem is that I don't have the skill or patience to map out exactly what he does.

Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

So I have a few thoughts for people who have finished
FULL GAME SPOILERS TURN YE AROUND
    1. Everyone got the terrifying ending with the heart ripping right?

    2. I love how they said the choices didn’t matter but IMMEDIATELY the missing crayon was the color I chose. I’m also wondering if the chosen color impacts the 7 flowers in Asgore’s shop.

    3. The dropped hints that Kris was still fucked up like in undertale were pretty subtle but also obvious with the ending. Conveyed mostly through the reindeer girl and the way she responds to you. “Why did you go talk to my dad?” The story of hiding under her bed to scare her. A comment about ketchup on your hands.

    4. Toby’s writing is as sharp and hilarious as ever.

    5. I really love the twists on the old formula. Being able to pacify enemies by firing them out. The way you couldn’t control Susie’s aggression. The traps in the overworld and the twists on dodging attacks. Just, perfect.

I absolutely cannot wait for more.

Well yes but I’m talkin flowers here, not hearts.

Maybe the light greenish one was supposed to represent the yellow heart? But I chose green for my color so to then see two greenish flowers when I also noticed the missing crayon felt like it may be a thing.

So in some ways Delta Rune seems like a prequel but in other ways not. Asgore and Toriel are not the king and queen and appear to be separated. Undyne is a police officer, Toriel is a teacher. But on the other hand Asriel is alive and your character appears to be 'Chara' the fallen human... but the town is on the surface. Man, who knows.

Asgore and Toriel might be king and queen, but they were separated in Undertale too.

The biggest hints that it’s a different reality or a precursor to Undertale and not a sequel is that Asriel is alive and Undyne is not missing an eye.

Cause otherwise you could attribute a lot of the jobs the people had and how they acted to be part of their personality quirks and doing what they always wanted on the surface world.

    That... isn't a burn.

    Also, my theory
This is a game not just set in an AU, but about alternate universes.

You, the player, is controlling Kris to the point where your name is on the save file. It's possible you play as somebody different in later chapters.

The different save files have subtle differences in the overworld.

The locked door to the south of town plays the Gaster sounds slowed down, and your phone plays them as well.

Sans winks at you if you indicate you know him.

The nature of multiple realities in fiction is probably gonna be a key theme here.

Something I've been thinking about with the ending
Why is there a cage on a cart in Kris's bedroom? Is the ending actually like, a normal thing they do in their life and they have a cage in their bedroom for those times when they feel like ripping out their soul? Or the times when someone else's soul enters their body and they decide to remove it, if that's what that was?

decided to unpack my thoughts on the survey, full spoilers ahead!
Susie, and the associated gameplay mechanics of "trying to pacify enemies before your party member tears them apart" are both fantastic. I haven't seen a game really take the ball and run with that idea before, and I kind of love it? To bits??? It's like trying to keep a tabletop RPG party going where you've got a couple of serious players who are having fun exploring the world and talking to people, and one absolute jerkass who immediately resorts to violence, except, uh, it's fun instead of awful. I also really like how bad her eventual 'pacifist' solutions are.

I'm less of a fan of the story as a whole. The real meat of this chapter is the uh...game world? Which is, I'm pretty damn sure, supposed to feel like a condensed, half-realized Undertale. Asriel/Raslei/etc. is there and he's doing something similar to what he did back in 2015, right? He's trying to spend time on a fun adventure with you. He made an Undertale for you, though this one is like... a B- effort. Needs improvement, shows potential. Not a huge fan of making things deliberately awkward, but this is theoretically only a chapter of a larger work, so I guess it's fine?

toby fox has shown that some of these characters are from like, 2013 originally and I get the impression a bunch of them are just scrapped ideas from undertale or other early projects. Which honestly is super cool? Taking ideas that didn't work and using them in a way where they're supposed to not quite work is a hell of a power move.

All that being said, not really sure I'm into where this is going. I spent a good...60-70% of this chapter waiting for the other shoe to drop and when it finally did I wasn't super excited about the implications.

One thing I really like and respect about Undertale was how it committed to telling the player "you should move on". So, it's not necessarily bad, but it does bug me that this game seems to be so directly tied to Undertale and the backstory of that game. (I probably have a more negative reaction to this than most folks, though, since I was absolutely not interested in the whole player/player character split reveal in the last game. It just didn't do anything for me and I'm not interested in exploring it further).

BUT ALSO: the moment where Sans implies he fucked your mom is the hardest I have laughed in a while, so, s'alright.

  • GvzbgulGvzbgul Registered User regular
I enjoyed Deltarune. I don't obsessively love it the same way as Undertale but it was a nice chill experience.
I could see the fanart coming from a mile away. Undertale + teen angst?!?!?

I'm in the "alternate universe" camp.

    Secret Boss
Finally beat Jevil. I went back to talk to Seam the shopkeeper and that dialogue is very interesting. "And my view of this world has become darker, yet darker" has some implications about Gaster.

And "once you realize the futility of your actions, come back here and we'll have a cup of tea as we watch the end of the world" really gives me the vibes of a dark parallel to how you went back to talk to Gerson after the True Pacifist ending in Undertale and he finally remembered his story. Makes me very afraid for how the story is going to turn out. Especially since it's been hammering in "you're choices can't affect things" so far.

    Backtracking
Haha if you go all the way back to the beginning at the end the save point will have a new description ribbing you about it.

Also I just found out Rouxls Kaard changes his shop dialogue after he "switches sides" and it's great.

I played Deltarune in one sitting last night.

    Very vague impressions below:
It was...fine. Good writing and the combat changes are neat, but I was hoping for something...more different, I guess? Hopefully it’s just the first chapter that will heavily lean on references to the first game.
