My Aggressors and Knight got here today. It is done. The whole 2000 pts is in my possession.
I'll probably build the Aggressors tonight, but I'm waiting for a few things for the Knight. I've got some microset/sol coming for decals. I was able to get almost decent results using just gloss varnish and some cuts in the decal, but I think the solvent is a big deal to really get the decal flat and set in to the surface. I'm also waiting on magnets so I can magnetize his carapace weapons. I'm not a huge magnetizer, but on a $150 dollar model? Yeah.
Take your time with the aggressors. That is a fiddly ass kit.
I think I spent longer assembling 3 bolter Aggressors than the 20 intercessors in my deathwatch army.

Yeah, the connections between the guns and the backpack have been...interesting. But so far so good. Been taking it slow, trimming and dry fitting each piece carefully, coming up with a plan to fit it together correctly. So far I have one done in about an hour lol.
Such beefy models though, I really love the Aggressor sculpts.
Aggressors are really good, too. They’re what I would consider the ideal ‘space marine’ unit. Big beefy boys with withering firepower that aren’t slouches in combat either, and are priced accordingly.
All this aggressor talk prompted me to take a pic of a few of the ones I bashed together. The kit's good, but they're a little too guerrilla armed for my personal liking. I slapped on some Tartaros Terminator arms (woulda been easier if I also had the shoulderpads) for what is statwise, basically a stormbolter on crack, and a single powerfist (why do they only have 2 attacks?), then a cheeky wolfen launcher for extra dakka. Proper heavy shooty boys that should fit it pretty well with my other primaris (I did 1 more, but his shoulderpad fell off before photo).
Ignore the lumpy helmets. My glossing failed on that batch, but I wanted to see how they looked with the domes on.

I find them okay in my Deathwatch. But mine were actually turned into Oblits with green stuff instead of just aggressors. They get killed easily. I either have to teleport them in or use the overpriced primaris transport. I am not a fan.
Also as a Deathwatch player I have a lot of other toys that are as good or better at clearing hordes.

Yeah, I'm playing Ultramarines. I figure my Knight Castellan will take a ton of the early game firepower, but I know Aggressors will be high on peoples list to take out. I have some ideas on how to get them around the board without a repulsor and bail them out of trouble if I need to, but we'll see how well it works in practice.
Sometimes gw can still be quite annoying. Mostly because of their no model no rules thing.
KT autarch. Oh nice, the starglaive is an option. Oh, you only get a pistol when taking the wings and the power sword. Oh, you only get mandiblaster with that package, too.
Woah, Nurgle Commanders for KT seem about as mean as the rest of the warband. A lvl3 logistics Putrifier can ignore one point of AP, throw his hyper grenades in addition to another model using its blight grenades, use his injector pistol with st5 ap-2, give one model of his team a 5++ for the whole game, has his aura that improves damage of blight grenades and can either improve the range of his pistol by 6" or increase the damage of one of his weapons by 1.
And then there's the blightspawn's plague sprayer.
edit:
Looks like GW is going all in on the celebrity wagon for audiobooks. After Brian Blessed and Donna Noble they now have David Tennant and Billie Piper as readers for their Young adult books.
Pious Vorne and UR-025 really are my favourites.
Locarno and Taddeus are close behind.
Dayak is a very nice down to earth model.
Draik is ok.
The Halflings look a bit too much like regular Astra Militarum troops for my taste.
Shadowguide's artwork looks good.
While GW is swooping up Dr. Who actors, I'm looking forward to a "The Death of the Emperor" audiobook narrated by Capaldi and written by Armando Iannucci
Got a going away game for a guy who’s shipping off to some awful frozen mid country wasteland. Gonna bring 3k of genestealer cult and give him one fleeting moment of joy mowing down my ineffectual alien boys.

Big Pappy Robby G made sure the boys got hooked up with that custom Ultramarines swag
Stories for 8 year olds set in a universe filled with rotting pus zombies and brutal slavery and blood gods and oppressive dystopic regimes and fifteen titted sex demons.
I get that they want to hook kids on the franchise early before they're lost to videogames, but all I can see is the 40k version of that Watchmen Babies comic.

What I said before was, that I feel like either it's going to be inappropriate for kids, or it's going to be so watered down that it will be Warhammer in name only (at which point, I don't know how many of those fans will convert to 'real' WH40K later on). There's ways to do Warhammer without graphic depictions of gore and naked sex demons, but I feel like some of the thematic stuff should also probably be held off until kids are a little older and more savvy (like pg13), and that content is pretty central to the setting imho.
I’d wager most of us got into 40k when we were pretty young.
Also lots of players have kids now, and wanting a way to share the setting with them is a good thing.
Also also, while 40k is super oot in terms of themes etc its rarely explicit in terms of details. Al the slaanesh/DE debauchery is alluded to but happens off camera, people get blown up etc but its not like saw/walking dead level of torture porn.
Old Yeller was a book for kids.
The Devil’s Arithmetic was a book for kids.
Watership Down was a book for kids.
The entirety of Grimm’s Fairy Tales are stories for kids, and there’s more death and dismemberment in there than the harshest of Black Library books.
It's not that 40k actually is grim or dark, but that 40k basks in the aesthetic of grim darkness and it really ruins the mood when there's a 12 year old girl with a slingshot on the cover.

It's not about the death or dismemberment (I mean, no one has a problem with the OG Star Wars trilogy), it's about sympathetic portrayals of a genocidal authoritarian theocratic regime that is obsessed with conformity. You might roll your eyes at that, but let me tell you, stuff like that can help to normalize perspectives & attitudes in the right audience. Like I said, you want kids to be a little older than 10-12 before you start exposing them to it. Because let's not joke around, no way is this series going to consistently emphasize the tragedy & misfortune like the books badablack is mentioning, they're going to be scary but ultimately triumphant hero's journeys. It's corporate entertainment meant to hook young readers with exciting adventures, not Newberry medal-worthy independently written stories intended to teach valuable life lessons. And that's a key element of the theming that WH40K has, that everything is terrible & hopeless, and this awful regime is a product of its environment, but also very much a part of the problem.
Edit: also what Lanlaorn said; the bigger issue here is that I don't think a version of wh40k that is appropriate & appealing for kids that young is going to be successful in 'hooking them early' like this seems to be trying for, because of how much it is going to diverge from the main product. You can reinvent pretty much any IP into whatever kind of series you want (and that can be really fun to see sometimes), but beyond a certain point its value will be limited to how successful it can be on its own because any new audience it brings in simply won't be interested in the original version.

I actually think 40k steps over that line a whole bunch already. Its the consequences of so many stories from the Imperium/Space Marine perspective. I agree it is not a good thing
40k doesn't have a "sympathetic portrayal of a genocidal authoritarian theocratic regime" any more than D&D or World of Warcaft does when you play a Paladin exterminating kobolds in the service of the local human kingdom.

I disagree strongly. You don't need to get defensive over it, it is simply a part of what WH40K is. But it's presented in a context of persevering even in the face of inevitable defeat, or frequently delving into dark humor and bitter irony, which makes it okay for people mature enough to fully process that. I love warhammer 40K, so please don't think I mean any of this as an attack or criticism of it. I'm just trying to articulate part of why I think children's books based on it is not the greatest idea.

The Imperium is generally presented as the good guys, just with a healthy dollop of 'they technically count as the good guys because everyone else manages to be far, far worse'. I'm not sure at what age kids start to be able to get a good grip on that really important last bit.
Shut up, Mr. Burton! You were not brought upon this world to get it!
I somewhat agree with Knuckles, but....you don't need to know the lore to the extent where it celebrates the authoritarian might of the Imperium to buy figures, paint figures, and play with figures. Kids can easily participate in the hobby and not be exposed to that side of things.
The more adult stuff really only comes into play with the Codexes and the novels.

I feel that the "Are We the Baddies" sketch is relevant here.

I'm with Lanlaorn here. I don't have anything against the idea of it per say: I just think it's odd to see the 40k aesthetic applied to children's media. And I also think 10-12 is maybe a little young to start on a wargaming hobby, but I think 13+ is fine. Obviously speaking generally here: it would really depend on the child and parents.

I wrestled with the question of Imperial protagonist problem. I GM and play DH so I make stories and interact with possibly the most *problematic* portion of Imperial facions. I think about stuff like this a lot. To not give a grande deluge of an essay on the forum, essentially I feel from a participant view, you can criticize the Imperium and still be on the side of the characters within these stories. You’re not celebrating fascism, you want people inside this titanic edifice to win and/or survive. Like in Gaunt’s Ghosts, it is brought up all the time that forces in the Imperium and the galaxy are bent on fucking over the Ghosts. You can still cheer them on when they protect a city or storm a fortress and still think that while in-universe a collosal war-machine is probably necessary to keep humanity alive, it could be better and you’re not supporting fascism by wanting the guard to win.
Cause yeah most anywhere else in fiction the Imperium is unnecessary and should be destroyed. In universe it makes sense to have. Chaos aren’t freedom fighters looking for a better tomorrow though, and the xenos are not Star Trek style aliens you can truly talk to and diplomatically work things out most of the time.
I anticipate the kids books not even mentioning anything even vaguely related to genocidal corpse gods and their regimes
