Cursor*10 -- Suck on this, Portal.

This may be the most incredible game you play this year.

It probably will, in fact be the most incredible flash game you play this year. And it's only about two minutes long.

It's called Cursor*10, and for what it's worth, it's my current contender for GoTY outright. Of course, we're only four days into 2008, but for what it's worth, the game is that good. You will be blown away by the simple genius of it.

Really.

I can't and won't spoil it for you, because that's part of the game itself. So just try it.

cursor_10.jpg

But don't take my word for it. Comments from Kotaku and Metafilter, where it's already been posted:

"Okay... now that is an AWESOME mechanic..."

"This game is ultimate awesome"

"Wow, this is what I love about games."

"Got it, damn that is cool."

"Ingenious. Need more."

"Awesome game."

"This is amazing and great."

"Really clever."

"Seriously awesome."

There, that should be all the praise you need. Go. Try it.

Need help? Stuck on lvl15?
Note: Please don't look at this spoiler until you've "almost beaten" the game. Rly. It might ruin it for you.

If you're still stuck near the beginning of the game, this is not for you. Go back and play it again, and think.
Stuck on the 15th level? Already depressed all three pads?
Well, there's a fourth. You may have missed it. It's on the sixth level. Go back and depress that one as well as the three on the fifteenth.

All four need to be simultaneously depressed to get to the sixteenth floor.

Interesting, but it didn't really blow my mind. It demonstrated an interesting mechanic for sure, but I got bored waiting with my finger on a button after the third switch. I don't think it'd translate well into a longer game.

That was clever. And they give you just enough time so that you can mess around a bit at first, figure out what's going on, and make a mad dash to the finish on your first try.

Very nice find. I just wish there was a score screen that calculated in things like Cursor Life left at the finish and number of cursors used in addition to the pyramids cleared.

It's really interesting, but I think a UI change (making the current cursor more distinct, perhaps with an inverted palette) would have helped a lot, as it is, it's fairly easy to lose oneself in the mess of cursors moving around.

It's a neat concept, but yeah, it's tedious. They should add a double-click option that will make your current cursor remain in its position and just move to the next.

The game takes five minutes to complete in it's entirety, so it's only tedious if you have the shortest of attention spans.

    And more importantly
the concept behind it, co-operating with yourself is it's crux, you are doing something, whilst your also doing something else. I'm holding that button down, whilst I'm also collecting the pyramids, and also finding the box and so on. Each iteration is you, and that magic is spoilt if you can just tell it to "hold to the end."

Again I would probably agree with you if it was an hour long or something, but it isn't.

That and you don't even need to hold down anything till the time runs out, just the window of opportunity you think you need, then you can go after the pyramids.
(Behind spoilers for those who haven't played it - don't read until completed.)

Really? I got the ending where all of my cursors give their lives so that Sparta may be free. I thought it was pretty rad.

There are some acts so ruthless, some deeds so unpalatable, that only the Vlka Fenryka are capable of undertaking them. It's what we were bred for. It's the way we were designed. I would love to see this style of temporal gameplay in other games. Imagine an FPS where every time you quickload,
you get a ghost of yourself attempting the room, like a time trial in a racing game, except your ghostly clone has real physical impact on the enemies and items in the room.

Then make that necessary to solve puzzles and give limited lives/time like in this game. It would be grand.
