The Pro Controller is a pretty good controller, but the joycon analog sticks are pretty trash and the dpad isn't great.

Here's a Switch issue I wasn't expecting: explaining the buttons on the Joy-cons.

I've had people over for game nights, and trying to explain which button to push is suprisingly hard when they don't have consistent letters. You can't say X, because anyone with the left Joy-con doesn't have X.

How do you describe them to non-Switch-having friends?

Any game that uses single joycon controls has always used up/down/left/right prompts for this exact scenario.

Left face button, right face button, top face button, bottom face button. Like how in games that have single joycon play they show a diamond with one button highlighted rather than naming them.

Yeah I generally tell them to look at the screen. Or press everything and see what does what.

Yeah, all my friends and I do most of our gaming on PS, and we always just say the PS equivalent regardless of what platform we're on.

The Switch's on-screen prompts being based on button location instead of label is really the best on-screen solution. I swap between Nintendo and XBox just often enough that I can't associate the letters with their placement. That's another great thing about Sony using their own unique labels. There's no controller where square is on the top or circle is on the bottom.

Also, are we the only ones who say "cross" instead of "X" when we're referring to the PS shapes?

Yeah I always pause when a game says "Hit Y" since I've been switching between the 360 controller on the PC and the Switch.

My wife went to order a copy of Shenmue I&II for me last month, and they were sold out of the PS4 version, so she asked if I wanted the XBO version instead, but I knew the QTEs would destroy me.

I forget which specific game did it but I've had X drilled into my brain as being the top button for a while now. Some game that would be like QUICK HAMMER X NOW HAMMER B.

Joycons aren't perfect, but pretending that they're not a functional controller and the Wiimote somehow was is a bit bizarre. I don't even know what criteria you are using for that assessment.

While we're on controller talk...has anyone used any of the 8bitdo controllers? I like their aesthetic, and the dpads look like the style I enjoy. I'm looking for a new steam controller but I'd like something that can work with my Switch as well.

can I hold it without discomfort is my number one criteria for a controller. Thus far, the joycons rate at the very bottom while the pro controller is number one

Hey the gamecube controller is fine!

Itd be the best controller ever made if the dpad was bigger.

I agree that it's nice and comfy to hold, but it's lacking inputs, you had to sacrifice rumble for wireless, the right stick is weird, and while I like the concept of each button having a unique shape, I feel like the standard diamond layout is more practical. The d-pad is far from it's only problem.

You only want 8 directions in smash, corresponding to the 8 gates around the gamecube/wiichuck analog stick. With a regular 360 analog you don't know exactly where you are pushing. A microswitched fight stick might work, but you need instant access to shield and the like. So, its not entirely some dumb nostalgia gimmick.

The powerA GC fixes the d-pad at least. Actually it might be the best switch d-pad yet among those stuck beneath the left analog.

All of the 8-bitdo controllers have errant diagonal inputs when switching between opposite directions, making them barely any better than a pro controller for 2D games. EXCEPT for the latest n30 pro2, which basically fixes the dpad but features thumbsticks even smaller than those on the joycons. Some people have modded their 8-bitdos something like the pro controllers by adding some obstructing circular tape, but usually that trades off responsiveness for accuracy.

I'm kind of suspicious of the input lag from the windows bluetooth stack on PC anyway. (and don't get me started on Android...) Steam and xBox controllers offer wireless dongles for good reason.

It does amaze me the different uses people get out of their switch. Mine for example has probably gotten a total of 1 hour of docked playtime since launch but I use it handheld *all* the time. If I'm sitting down in my.livingroom I'd just rather use a console with a bit more oomph. Others use it pretty much only docked
Ninty definitely knocked it out of the park

Lately I just try to keep pokemon catch combos going while my girlfriend watches her misery porn on Hulu. I think it's call This Is Us or something?

I mostly play docked. I just enjoy having the screen real estate to really take in the eye candy for games like Breath of the Wild or Xenoblade. Even Hollow Knight had visuals I really wanted to drink in on 60 inches of digital canvas.

But catching the same pokemon over and over is totally a handheld activity. As is Picross.

I never would have guessed that so many people have problems with the joycons! They're not the luxurious comfort of the Pro controller / WiiU Pro (my current favorite controllers) but I've never had discomfort issues. For me, they're perfectly "adequate", which is fine (to me) considering they can be used in so many different ways.

Maybe I just have tiny baby hands or something.

You know I had to get Hyrule Warriors on sale now that all the extra content is wrapped up in a package. I don't understand why there's no rumblings of a sequel or of a new Nintendo IP Musou.

Well they do have a fire emblem game. What else could do they do?

Actually kirby sucking up huge amounts of enemies and spitting them out at other enemies and samus blasting waves upon waves of space pirates sounds pretty cool too.

I think a Xenoblade Warriors game could work. Sure, there's only three Xenoblade games so far, but Fire Emblem Warriors also only focused primarily on three of its games, so it'd be fine.

I'd want it more if they could get characters from Saga and Gears. I know KOS-MOS would be the obvious answer, but I'd love to see what potential moveset chaos would have.

    Golden Axe.

Edit: Oops, wait -- misread that as "Sega," not "Saga."

I still have four GameCube controllers (and the BBA, and the GBA player, and the component cables - I bought too many GC accessories) so I should probably look at getting a controller adapter. Can they be used for anything but Smash?

There are a number of games that the adapter can be used for, I can't find a good list however.

No, deleting also leaves the save file. The only difference is whether the icon remains. Save data has to be deleted manually whichever you pick.
