I am really guilty of one-sided conversations. Not that I particularly want to talk about me but people try to be friendly and ask me questions and I answer them but rarely think to ask stuff back. I usually only notice it's happened after the interaction is over. I'm just bad at human relationships.

    God dammit

I'm getting some kind of traffic ticket in the mail today according to usps informed delivery.

I can't afford a traffic ticket. I don't remember running a red light anywhere anytime recently... I've done it accidently once or twice because it would have been less safe for me to try to stop in the weather.

I have a date thursday with someone I met in real life. What I found baffling is that she gave me her business card the first night we might; I like a woman who knows what she wants and is not afraid to make it known.

interfacelift.com. It navigates like an old-timey Russian adware hive, but it's really good at letting you filter down to your specific aspect ratio and resolution and just browsing tons of pretty pictures.

Alternatively, just use NASA's Black Marble composites, like I have for the past decade.

Follow up date tonight with that one handsome fun femme from Wednesday. Gonna go see the holiday lights at the Zoo and I'm excited because I've never seen the Zoo after dark before. They also get really excited about cool animal facts so I'm excited to flex the field biologist knowledge a little.

    National Zoo in DC?

Zoo Lights are AWESOME, you will have a great time!

    That'd be the one!

we're both ex-Smithsonian too so there's an entire extra level of DC nerdiness here

They also do a Halloween event with some beer booths. It’s pretty fun.

It’s a big enough event where it’s fun to make bets on whatever the big costume will be that evening.

We saw a lot of Harley Quinn’s the same year Suicide Squad came out.

You can usually contest them, I think

  • JedocJedoc In the scuppers with the staggers and jagsRegistered User regular
Yeah, but the court costs for contesting them are usually close to the same as the cost of the ticket. Unless your state has some unusually punitive points system, it's generally not worth it.

So I did something a little reckless today

An online friend (whom I’ve never met) put out an urgent call for a home for a bearded dragon, needed to be picked up today

She had heard of it from her boyfriend who works at PetSmart who heard of it from a random dude who originally tried to surrender it to PetSmart

Another of her online friends (whom she’s never met) could give it a home but had no transport

I basically took off work, drove an hour to a random man’s house to pick it up (he turned out to be really nice!), then drove an hour in the other direction to drop it off with this other strange lady

That's not generally true? The court costs of the ticket are what make it so expensive. You generally don't pay court costs when you are innocent.

I admit that I was drawing from my local experience, which I should not have done when giving general advice. But I definitely paid 70 bucks in court fees for the privilege of a cop admitting that he pulled me over on the wrong side of a speed zone and erroneously gave me an $80 ticket.

Call up the court. They are usually very willing to work out payment plans and stuff, as long as the communication is good. I bet you could get away with 3 payments of $40.

I don't know if it's like this in the US, but sometimes just pleading your case to the judge will help reduce the cost if you have some valid reasoning

My uncle recently got a ticket and went in to ask for them to reduce the charge because he is unemployed and retired with a very low pension and they knocked a hundred off the ticket

    I feel very accomplished today

While working a friend's pop-up shop, I used that shop's leatherworking tools to fine-tune a guy's messenger bag strap so good to his specifications (esp that he wanted a leather knife sheath built into the strap) that he gave me $55 on top of the cost of materials and let me have a meal on the house at the restaurant he GMs for

I basically made $100 in an hour and a half which blows my whole mind

    This knife was crazy, too

Damascus steel with bronze trim and a handle made with mother-of-pearl inlays, all in one of the largest folding knives I've ever seen

I also tuned the folding mechanism a little, while I was working on the strap, since I could and had the right tools for it

That sounds like a mistake. Criminal court costs only get invoked if the party is guilty, and civil court costs are often invoked on the losing party.

In North Carolina this was definitely the case. Court fees are something on the order of $180 if you're called as a defendant for moving violations, which you are for 100% of moving violations because North Carolina's moving violation laws are just an extortion racket.

How... how did I not know that it cost money to do these things? I've been living my whole life thinking that "court fees" were only incurred if you had to hire a lawyer... and then, it would be thousands and thousands of dollars

I had no idea contesting a speeding ticket or violation by yourself cost money

The court fees are meant to cover the time of the people there. The stenographer, the judge, the prosecution, the clerks, etc. etc.

Like, a speeding ticket might have a fine of 20 bucks. And then a hundred bucks in court costs.

That's not the case with all court fees, especially the ones for speeding tickets.

Trust me, it takes all comers in traffic court. One woman even came in with a giant foam board explaining why she wasn't speeding.

She was wrong, but my boss was so impressed that she left her off the hook.

EDIT: Unless you mean the burden of paying the fees, then yeah. It really does.

I don't think that there are Court Fees for speeding fines in the UK, but if you fail to prove your innocence they can increase the fine for wasting everyone's time.

I know that there are court fees for bringing something to the Magistrate's Court like divorce or someone owing you money. Challenging the reduction of your benefits is free though, thankfully.
