With the Golden Globes nominations out it's interesting to see how the hookers and blow bribes to the HFPA panned out, because it looks like a mess. Maniac got snubbed, Jack Ryan got snubbed, Yellowstone got snubbed, Tim Blake Nelson got snubbed, Paddington 2 was snubbed, everything is for hack frauds.
As I get deeper into Schitt's Creek, this show has moved from a charming little background comedy to one of the more heartwarming and accepting shows I've seen in a while.
The show has an openly pansexual main character, and 3 seasons in I've yet to see it even come near being the butt of a joke, while still allowing the character his own flaws and foibles without being a stereotype.
I loved this conversation from an early episode, shortly after he had slept with the girl he had met, Stevie, who assumed he was gay, they talked about his sexuality in a wine store, using a real cute metaphor.
Stevie: So, just to be clear… I’m a red wine drinker.
David: That’s fine.
Stevie: Okay, cool. I *only* drink red wine. And up until last night, I was under the impression that you, too, *only* drank red wine. But I guess I was wrong?
David: I see where you’re going with this. Um, I *do* drink red wine. But I *also* drink white wine. And I’ve been known to sample the occasional rose. And a couple summers back I tried a merlot that used to be a chardonnay, which got a bit complicated.
Stevie: Oh, so you’re just really open to *all* wines.
David: I like the wine and not the label. Does that make sense?
Stevie: Yes, it does.
And it's never the butt of the joke in the scene and the characters accept who he is for who he is.
edit: Also seriously Daniel Levy ( who plays David) has some serious comedic chops and hope we see him everywhere in the future
Schitt's Creek is really strong. It's just so small and Canadian that I don't think anyone notices. It's really worth the watch, though. It will make you laugh and will make you feel good, full stop, no downsides.
I binged The Last Kingdom on Netflix (actually not bad!) which is about Wessex fighting back against the Danelaw, because I really enjoy this period of English history due to how shrouded in myth it is (Was Ragnar Lodbrok, one of the most notorious and important figures of the period, real? Who knows!!!)
The Christian women are all like, spectacularly homely (except one in Season 3/4 because she is the main character's love interest) and the Pagan women are all spectacularly hott

I was starting to kind of get into it as a cynical dark comedy about shallow Hollywood types, and then I hit the episode where Bojack meets his old best friend, and Jesus fuck.
That was one of the most soul crushing half hours of television I've ever seen, and I am now fully on board this weird fucking furry train.

Daniel Levy used to be a VJ on MuchMusic and it was clear even back then that he had the capacity to move on to bigger and better things. Glad to hear he's impressing on the show.

5 episodes into S3 of F is For Family, it's still really good, really coming into a TV MA King of the Hill. Vince Vaughn as the new all american Joe Top Gun neighbor works well and I'm hoping they don't go a predictable path with him (he's essentially replacing Sam Rockwell even though he still shows up), and it feels like they are able to do 4 solid subplots with the family in a consistent manner with solid jokes (Maureen's sort of attached to Bill right now). Bill and Bridget should be annoying together but they aren't because it's so foul, and Nguyen Nguyen works well in Sue's little world.

Vikings has a bigger budget, and on occasion that definitely shows, but outside a few characters, the acting is not great, and the writing is limited.
Last kingdom isn't good, but it's charming and has a much better sense of when to take itself seriously and when not to. It has a better understanding of what it is, and what it isn't.
The latest season of Vikings is especially dour, and the characters the show wants us to find interesting are hopelessly dull. I'm not sure there's anyone left that didn't treat charisma as a dump stat.
Like, they're both shit sandwiches, but Last Kingdom is at least served with a pickle.

I quit Vikings once it started focusing on Ragnar’s sons, who with the exception of Bjorn are all dull as mud, yes even the one they try to make interesting by having him be a psychopath.

The Last Kingdom isn't a high budget affair, but the cast is fun, and there are things the show does really well. I've also only seen the first season, but there is a really nice emphasis on writing the characters from the perspective of the time and building conflict from the differing worldviews.

I do like it a lot, actually. It's fun. Something Vikings often isn't, really, and doesn't make up for with quality drama/acting/whatever, either. It often just goes through the motions.
Not that Last Kingdom is always good, but I'd always pick it over Vikings (though, Vikings does have some really good episodes here and there, early on).
I binged the whole thing this weekend and it's really great. I like the broader focus on other characters and it continues to have that rapid-fire dialogue from S1.
Yeah, I binged S2 of MMM this weekend too and it was phenomenal.
I also made it through the first 3/4 of Happy's first season. I was really excited for the show based on the previews, then pretty much forgot it about it since I don't have easy access to live television. I got super excited when I saw it on Netflix this weekend. My only complaint is that I have to wait until tomorrow night to finish the last two episodes.
Not exactly streaming, but given that this seems to be our De Factor TV thread, is anyone watching SyFy's take on Nightflyers?
I watched the first 5 yesterday and while it's got an ok cast and pretty solid production values, the writing is not the best. Stretching out a semisexy space horror novella from the 80s into 10 hours of 2018 TV looked to be too tall an order. Instead of giving the creators room to flesh out the story and maybe even call in some of Martin's wider Sci-Fi universe (which is pretty cool), they butcher every character and use super cheesy on the nose modern sci-fi metaphors and/or tropes (being a dangerous telepath is like being mentally ill - being a computer interface expert/hacker/decker is like shooting up heroin - ugh, we get it, stop).
On top of it all, they added a crew complement to the ship when pretty much the entire point is that the Nightflyer is run by one man*. The only reason they added a crew is to kill them for TV. It's fuckin' infuriating.
I'm making it sound worse than it is, but as a fan of the source material, it is a letdown. They are burning off the rest of the episodes this week, so either it's all intentional to make it feel bingey, or Syfy knows it's a dog.

The dub ruined Fenneko, the best character in the show.
Dubbing quality has only gotten better since the dark days of the 1980s. (For the record, I was a sub only person during my teenage years, but have gotten more flexible in my consumption since then).
Cowboy Bebop was really a milestone when it comes to the sub/dub debate.
