Yes, the basic mode takes forever and ever to win. There's the Radiant "easy" mode (which isn't much easier, just less grindy) which still takes like 60 hours if you are new to the game. And every time your high level party gets wiped it just adds to the duration of the game. I loved the basic idea and the early game but I never got anywhere with the last dungeon.

Oof, good to know. Haven't had anyone die yet, but no way am I interested in grinding to victory if that's the whole game. And I'm already getting annoyed with things like the what's-his-name stupidly blocking off stress relief spots just to fuck with the player, or bosses that can unavoidably lop off 15-20 HP against one or two characters at once but are still somehow only first-level bosses.

If they could implement tiers for the changes so you can easily swap between patch verisons or something like that it'd be nice. I guess you could do it now via mods or whatever but I think we are beyond the base game modes that are provided

I was actually looking through the mods available today, as I had a hankering for being the world's most evil HR director and throwing mooks to the wolves

Sadly there didn't seem to be anything remotely like "Move the game back to Patch X"

Also realizing after looking around that I can't give advice on how to play this game anymore as too many of the mechanics have changed

Was the real horror of Darkest Dungeon that you own a game that is never the game you want to play?

All three medicine kits in this medium sized Weald run were within three rooms of the entrance. Two of them within a screen of each other. No one even drew a weapon

"All right guys, wish us luck, we'll hopefully be back in a couple days with the ohshititsrighthere."

Edit: Being brave and foolhardy adventurers, my team pushed their early fortune into a full dungeon crawl, ending with a "well, we did just walk through here unscathed, had a recent nap, and the puppy just had a treat..fuck it, let's light this Eldritch beacon aflame". Naturally, everyone broke, but thankfully my Houndmaster broke heroic. So we killed my first optional Shambler and pulled the Ancestor's Candle...worked out pretty well for everyone! Except for my Grave Robber...she's dead now. Poor girl was my new favorite, too

So I’ve been playing this again since the Color Of Madness hit consoles. Things I’ve noticed:
    • Allowing the Abomination to team up with religious characters creates many more fun team combinations. In particular, it’s easier to find a healer other than the Occultist or Arbalest.
    • It seems the Crimson Curse infestation is not as overbearing as before. There’s a lot β€˜Throbbing Cocoons’ curios about, so you can trigger fights if you need more invitations. Previously it seemed like 50% of all enemy types would be CC which made it hard to specialise for an area week to stun/blight. I mean it’s still a thing, but it seems a good tweak.
    • I don’t mind the Farm levels. They’re not really endless (so far). More like taking 4 or 5 fights in a row before getting a break. I beat the first mission ok, but I need to work on my team for the Miller mission.
    • The new enemies certainly seem interesting. They use existing mechanics in new ways such as activating stealth midway through a fight, giving their friends riposte, and one type has a riposte that never goes away.
    • The wandering boss is a bit evil. He cures bleed/blight at the end of every round, gets much tougher Prot below half health, and also drops exploding crystal things. I’ve beaten him a few times, but had to run away once as well.
    • There’s other mechanics I don’t fully understand. Sometimes the torch disappears in a normal mission for some reason.

Mostly what I like about this expansion, and what I liked about CC, is it’s more of the good old turn-based combat, but in a different structure.

I have been playing quite a bit since the latest patch hit and the game seems ok still. I was expecting a bigger difficulty increase but maybe I am just already familiar with the game enough for it to not matter. I should finish up my darkest playthrough tonight and then start a Stygian one. Thanks to the patch my favorite party combo, cleric plus jester, works with every group makeup now. I did take down the 16 pounder no problem with a cleric, jester, houndmaster, she barbarian. I will say I really like this combo but I did notice that the barbarian seems like an all around better leper. The only thing the leper really has going is the self health/stress heal.

I disagree. Using just if it bleeds, iron swan, wicked hack, and adrenalin rush you get a pretty well rounded character. She can hit the back spot (only from the front but still), can hit from anywhere but the last spot, and has a damage buff/self heal/cleanse in one move. The other moves are good closers, if you know your are going to get the final hit or absolutely must kill that unit now then go for it. I just avoid using them though.

I picked this up for the first time a little over a week ago. It'd been on my Steam wishlist for so long and it was on sale again - and I just finally caved.
Grabbed the Shieldbreaker DLC (and Musketeer, but free.) Held off on Crimson Court and Color of Madness for now.

It's pretty fun, but I think being an XCOM Ironman veteran dulled me to its supposed difficulty. I mean, it's no smooth sailing all the time, but after 40 weeks I think I've only had a handful of 'Oh crap oh crap oh crap' moments. That said, I'm taking my time and I haven't braved any Champion level runs yet. And those few Oh Crap moment I did have were interesting.

In week 7 I ran into my first Glowy Red Orb Altar. I knew, I knew it was a bad idea, but curiosity got the better of me. That was fun. I think everyone in my party saw Death's Door. They held fast, but my plague doctor eventually succumbed - to a heart attack. Found a nice candle, tho'.

I've been mad at the game autosaving everything just once - I was ready to embark on a quest, had already bought provisions 'n all, but wanted to check / do something at the hamlet first. I had just earlier realised that the game will remember your bought provisions between switching from the Embark and Hamlet screens if you don't change up your heroes, so that's nice. - It did not, however, remember which quest I had selected to go on, so my party ended up on in a different region's boss dungeon instead. Yipes. Alt-F4 during loading didn't help. Alas.

'course, when I decided to push on anyway and ran into my first party wipe against the boss that was entirely on me.

On a different note, once Champion level dungeons started showing up on the map I finally got tired of not being able to easily distinguish the difficulties at a glance. Deuteranomalous vision (weak red-green colorblindness) will do that. Hrmph.
Curiously enough, despite there being a million-and-one mods for this, I only saw a single one aimed at colourblindness - and for another part of the UI for another type of colour vision deficiency altogether at that. So - I dug into the game files, booted up GIMP, looked up some documentation files and uh... oh look, a shiny new mod:

What difficulty are you playing on? As a fellow xcom veteran even I was taken aback by how brutal Stygian is.

Darkest, I think? The "normal" one.
Left the optional difficulty tweaks set to default.

I did tentatively start a Stygian campaign yesterday. On week 3 now, I think? Yeah, it's rougher. Not sure I want to start all over at this point, though.

There's still a limit to the amount of punishment I'm willing to take - I bounced off hard from "Impossible" in XCOM. I'm sure it would ease up after some upgrades, but that initial hump remained too high.

Back to Darkest Dungeon - I'm probably spending way too much time in the hamlet. I don't really have any set teams, and I'm trying to level (at least) one of each class, too. Basically building a new team each expedition. It's fun, but quite a time sink.

Realising "whoops, I'm running out of lvl 1 & 2 heroes and there are still a couple of Apprentice bosses left." was interesting -managed it without sacking any characters for being overlevelled, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to keep that up for the Veteran bosses. Only one down so far, but part of my roster already considers Veteran expeditions beneath them. Hmm, I'll see.

Oh, and I'm playing a rather weird mouse / gamepad combo. Expeditions are entirely played entirely with the controller, the Hamlet mostly with the mouse. Kinda fun seeing the UI switch back and forth depending on which one I touched last, but it's kinda kludgey.

Just finished my first darkest game. Compared to 3rd run, the final boss was a chump. Started a Stygian game, The Dunwich Hamlet, and promptly gave Reynolds a massive stress boost by talking to the damn ghost. No loss of life so far but that made the first ruins run needlessly tight. Managed to get a jester in my second set of meat heroes so I can actually lower stress over the course of a run. Kind of surprised at how much I liked using the plague doctor after all this time. Real shame she takes up the same spot as a jester or I would use her more.

I always found Plague Doctor way more useful than Jester myself, but then I always felt his stress heal was too small to be effective, whereas her posion and stun game is super on point

  • KriegaffeKriegaffe Registered User regular
I like the PD as they can nearly be solo damage-dealer if the enemy is blight-weak. Plus they can clutch heal to get someone off death's door.

I use the Jester primarily in bleed-based teams, and then he stress heals for the last few rounds. If I'm feeling wild, I'll make a shuffle team and go for Finale. This always feels much more chaotic, but is fun when it comes together.

But I rarely find the two characters together. Their inclusion is very much based on the dungeon type.

  • TubeTube Registered User admin
The jester used to be a low tier character who could be made to work in innovative ways and they have steadily nerfed him into the ground from that point.

  • furlionfurlion Riskbreaker Lea MondeRegistered User regular
I use the jester in almost every run I make. With the right setup you can heal 17 stress per turn, plus his buff lets me focus on damage trinkets instead of worrying about accuracy. Plus the damn bleeds are so nasty. Apparently on Stygian the game does not give you the reminder if you start a quest without any trinkets. Still things are going well on my run. On week 13 and only lost one character (an abomination) so far because I forgot to bring any damn shovels. That run was disastrous.

And platinum trophy get. From November 2016 to December 2018. That may be the longest gap between starting and finishing a game I have. After putting so much time into darkest difficulty Stygian really wasn't that bad. I would not have wanted to start there though. I finished the darkest dungeons with 4 teams composed of a jester, a vestal, a highway man/abomination, and man at arms/leper/crusader. Actually I finished the entire playthrough with those 4 teams and only lost 1 character as I mentioned earlier. Not really interested in any of the dlc but this game is fucking great.

so i've been watching some streams because for some weird reason i really enjoy watching darkest dungeon. it's come up a few times but either i'm on mobile or can't say it in chat at the time, what is the advantage of leveling/not leveling a zone? i always just looked at whether the loot was worthwhile and whether i have (real life) time to run the given dungeon

There is no real advantage I am aware of, other then maybe having more low level missions available in that area for your fresh meat. Although I think the game will always create level appropriate missions based on your heroes.

I'd guess that the background story would be something like the Klondike Gold Rush, which certainly did wonders for drawing people to the otherwise inhospitable climate of Alaska.

Yes! Awesome premise idea. Someone discovers untold wealth in a desolate region and suddenly there's a huge influx of fortune seekers. Only it turns out people are actual mining into the protrusion of the Worst Thing or something similar. So the new hamlet equivalent would basically be a newly established gold mine camp that steadily grows overtime.

i could see this being a positive change. did anyone on their first playthrough really lean into the dependability of they hamlet occupants? i have nothing to support it but i'd assume most people tried to keep their heroes alive rather than dismiss and replace on a whim.
