Austin Walker just said he's gonna start culling his Twitter follows and means no offense to anyone who gets cut, and I always knew this day would come....
After the Dragon Age teaser at the Game Awards, and Waypoint talking about it afterwards, I started another run of Inquisition
I still mostly dig the writing and characters, but boy howdy this gameplay and open world suck
It's not really lampshading when the writers of the movie said they didn't know fridging was a thing and just wanted an easy way to make Deadpool suffer. Like, even if you do something bad ironically, it's still bad: it's even worse when they admit they're doing it sincerely.
Actually I guess Austin is catching up on the GOTYcasts because he tweeted some stuff he wanted to contribute about a discussion on those GOTYcasts, like "If I was there I would have said XYZ". Alas.....

I actually never finished Inquisition for that reason. The story is engaging but I completely lost interest in actually playing the fuckin thing. The open world is so like empty and lifeless despite being crammed with really boring shit to do

The word refrigerator is inserted very awkwardly in a bunch of the narration for no reason whatsoever. It definitely feels like it was self-aware. I guess it could be accidental but death of the author and everything.
Especially when it comes to intersectional criticism
What about Jan?
I'm also uncomfortable with the base assumption that any minority should be well versed in feminist critique. Like, yes, it'd be great if everyone on the site was, and I definitely would like them to be better, but the notion of calling out that "the Filipino guy should have known what fridging is" doesn't sit right with me either.
I mostly wanted to drive home the point that GB as a whole is still extremely white and extremely male and it's important to bear that in mind when approaching their discourse. They have a lot of blind spots.
but my gosh, fridging feels like such a well known phrase and trope at this point that it's actually quite unnerving that folks at giantbomb wouldn't know about it
Yeah like... The thing to me is just that, fridging is a 101-ass term and it's honestly surprising to learn that it's apparently possible to be a media critic who works on the internet and not have heard of it before
Like it'd be impressive if it weren't so disappoonting
Not to be all "well, actually," but from my recollection the giant bomb guys were familiar with the term as a trope that exists, but they flubbed the definition

I don't know about the rest but Vinny absolutely did not

Per my original statement, I wasn't trying to make the suggestion that because Jan is a minority, that he should be up on everything regarding every minority. My issue was you specifically spelling out that the GB staff is white as a reason to expect less of them, when clearly the problem extends beyond that, in how you had a room of eight dudes and not as single one, white or otherwise, knew what Abby was talking about.
Regarding your reply, going "I'm not surprised they fucked up, they're white" and also seemingly suggesting "It's okay that Jan fucked up because he's already a minority" is.. I get where you're coming from, but I can't agree with the conclusion. Should Jan be expected to know about feminist critique because he's a minority? No, of course not. Should he not be held to the same standard (or at least the same disappointment) that you're holding the rest of the GB staff to, though?
I listened to days 1 through 4 of Giant Bomb GOTY, but partway through 5 I had had enough. I don't really need to know how they arrived at the exact top 10 ordering.
I wish a little bit that they had included The Sims in the best ongoing top 3, just so that it wouldn't be 3 shooters.

Finally listened to Limetown season 2 on our road trip back home this past weekend. Not sure how I feel about it overall, but I generally enjoyed it I think. I guess I still have some questions about some character motivations.
These days, I mostly only have time for MBMBaM, TAZ, the Giant Beastcast, and occasionally the Bombcast. I throw in Wonderful! occasionally as well to lighten the mood after a frustrating day.

My apologies. It was meant as a joke since the entire beginning of the podcast thread was about Giant Bomb so far.
I didn't know anyone would get defensive about it.

I do enjoy Pete Holmes.
I mean, to some degree. Patrick and Austin aren't at GB anymore, granted
but they're friends with them
How can they have not have heard about fridging?
edit: And it's not even an age thing, because Ben and Jan were there.

I keep trying to think of examples in media that people should know, but the only one that comes to mind is Death Wish.

There's a pretty big one in the 4th biggest movie of all time that came out just last year?
