My apologies. It was meant as a joke since the entire beginning of the podcast thread was about Giant Bomb so far.

I didn't know anyone would get defensive about it.

The podcast threads have a long history of people complaining about when a specific topic winds up being the main focus for a while. There's definitely room for acknowledging that we get a bit to insular sometimes, especially when it's rehashing discussions that have already been done to death, but it's a thing often enough people can get ...touchy... about it.

Which isn't on you, I don't think you spend a ton of time here usually, so you wouldn't have known.

Back when we had a Giant Bomb thread people would constantly complain we kept talking about Persona. It's the circle of life.

Raijin, if you want a safe topic to get you back on track, you could talk about the podcaster Travis McElroy.

This post was sponsored by Tom Cruise.

I think it would have helped if Abby used a stronger argument there (the problem is almost less that Mom of War got fridged, but was objectified to the point of being a literal object the whole game, and it's hard to argue against that), but I also don't blame her for being nervous trying to explain it to both a room full of her (white, male) elders in industry while also being hyperaware that this critique was going to fill her inbox up with harassment

I mean I definitely go elsewhere now for feminist critique but it was pretty disappointing to hear how unprepared the rest of them were for that conversation, and also how unsupportive they were of Abby for making it

I did find they made a lot more space for Abby to talk this time when last year they talked over her a lot more, so that was nice!

Honestly my bigger issue was that Brad was so insistent about what a massive event Red Dead was, to the point where I had to take a break to remind myself there was stuff I liked in it because oh boy did he make me hate it

Said it before, say it again: every argument Brad had was some varying level of frustrating or badly concieved

But him saying we should applaud Rockstar for taking such an enormous monetary risk was actually fucking gross

These conversations always make me feel uncomfortable because of how people say "white, male" instead of "healthy white male" when talking about the privileged perspective of certain groups.

Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
  • SimBenSimBen Hodor? Hodor Hodor.Registered User regular
It's not so much the opinions Brad has as the way he states them. He constantly argues in bad faith and goes backwards from his opinions ("I like this thing so it must be good at whatever we're talking about").

privilege is not a binary state. Little about white privilege or mail privilege is impacted by chronic health issues. I'm fucking transgender but I still have hella white privilege and need to remember to check myself when issues of race come up.

Able privilege is certainly a thing as well but it's so extremely tangential to most discussions of race and gender.

Same could be said about omitting cis, heterosexual, American, anglophone, middle-class, judeo-christian, just-under-middle-aged...

there's a ton of facets to a person's privilege and I think using "white male" as a shorthand is mostly useful to keep the text readable but shouldn't imply we're not recognizing the other ways in which their perspective is privileged.

I haven't actually listened to any non-Giant Bomb podcasts on a while.

I did listen to Audio Entropy podcast Book of Mudora, but I'm a few episodes behind and I sort of dropped off on everything else I was subscribing to.

I wish Important If True would return.

I don't really get the appeal of the giant bomb GOTY deliberations, people only ever have negative things to say about them.

I really did enjoy the vast majority of listening to them. Even when they were talking about RDR2, they had a bunch of interesting things to say about it and hell, I'm more interested in that game now than I was before.

Also, a good Jeff or Alex rant is always fun to listen to and we were served.

i was mildly curious about rdr2 so I looked up a review of it and then youtube recommended me a video with the ending spoiled in the title so I guess now I don't have to play it!

my partner was interested in trying it on the condition hunting was optional and it was less misogynistic then rockstar's typical stuff but I couldn't really find any way to check on those without sitting through a let's play of it or something and god is that not a fun game to watch someone play.

I like hearing about people talk about stuff they like! The format change was good this year because they talked about each release individually and you got to hear them gush about a lot of games I wouldn't have heard of otherwise. It's basically a nice collection of game recommendations. I also like hearing them talk about games I liked in a different lens, and I get a vicious enjoyment out of Most Disappointing or Hottest Mess because sometimes it's fun to just hear a lot of dunks on bad things.

Like, I am graduating from "thinking hard about Obra Dinn" to "buying Obra Dinn this weekend" because of GOTY. I want to get Astro Bot and Tetris Effect when I get more money because I didn't realize they were PSVR system sellers.

Having the ending spoiled for me is, specifically, the thing that made me interested in the game.

It is generally better about the misogyny with the exception of one or two plot points and a few extremely Rockstar side missions. The women in the camp are easily some of the best written ones in Rockstar games, and there's a good number of them in main and sidequest form, too.

I guess it's just more interesting to talk about the moments that stand out and the moments that stand out in the GOTY deliberations are people being dumbs vs. the unremarkable greater portion of it where it's not tedious, so that's all that gets posted about?

Never assume too much of white dudes in gaming

Especially when it comes to intersectional criticism

    What about Jan?

I'm also uncomfortable with the base assumption that any minority should be well versed in feminist critique. Like, yes, it'd be great if everyone on the site was, and I definitely would like them to be better, but the notion of calling out that "the Filipino guy should have known what fridging is" doesn't sit right with me either.

I mostly wanted to drive home the point that GB as a whole is still extremely white and extremely male and it's important to bear that in mind when approaching their discourse. They have a lot of blind spots.

Per my original statement, I wasn't trying to make the suggestion that because Jan is a minority, that he should be up on everything regarding every minority. My issue was you specifically spelling out that the GB staff is white as a reason to expect less of them, when clearly the problem extends beyond that, in how you had a room of eight dudes and not as single one, white or otherwise, knew what Abby was talking about.

Regarding your reply, going "I'm not surprised they fucked up, they're white" and also seemingly suggesting "It's okay that Jan fucked up because he's already a minority" is.. I get where you're coming from, but I can't agree with the conclusion. Should Jan be expected to know about feminist critique because he's a minority? No, of course not. Should he not be held to the same standard (or at least the same disappointment) that you're holding the rest of the GB staff to, though?

boy those are extremely uncharitable reads on what I said

Okay. I'm not sure how to read "Never assume too much of white dudes in gaming" other than "they're white, what did you expect?", but whatever. This is edging a little close to "not-all-white-dudes" on my part so I'll drop it.

We have a tendency to give people we like a lot more credit than they've earned sometimes. Of course we should be disappointed in them when they miss stuff, but we shouldn't assume they won't until they've actually given us reason to.
