Dammit. I've ruined my wife's day and, by extension, my own, at least until the mail arrives.
I subscribe to that service that lets you see what mail you're supposed to get that day before it gets to your mailbox. I saw something addressed to my wife from the court system. It is almost certainly a photo-enforced traffic ticket, but I texted her anyway to ask if she was expecting anything.
She was not, and now she's incredibly stressed because she doesn't know what it is. She suggested that in the future I shouldn't mention something like that since we won't know until the mail arrives and until then she'll just worry about it.
I'm sure whatever it is won't be a big deal. I don't care about a traffic ticket but now I've got this sick-to-my-stomach feeling from worrying by proxy. Gah.
This exact thing happened to us last month. Except it was a jury duty survey. Also the new mail lady decided my wife didn't live at our address and didn't deliver that letter. My wife was stressed as hell for weeks.
Speaking of I convinced the nurse at my doctor's office to get a flu shot from now on by reminding her that she isn't getting the flu shot for her. She should be getting it for me and people like me, with compromised immune systems.
So yay for that, at least.
I still can't believe I have to argue with nurses and PAs about this on the regular.
These are people who should fucking know better.
I thought most medical practices required their staff members to get them. All of them up here do at least.
The fuck is wrong with people?
Not really a requirement and some of the most wrongest people can become doctors and nurses. I've had straight up evangelical/baptist like preaching from a nurse about vaccines because they were crazy. It doesn't really require a scientist's mind to get into the field, a lot of it is memorization and pattern matching.
A scientist's mind does help, though, especially with ochem. But a lot of medical professions like doctors you just have to impress a group of people to get accepted into the program. Things like volunteer work matter (almost) more than being a really smart or driven person. IME, religious people volunteer more than non religious people, even if they are in worse ways (like missionary stuff).
Occasionally a piece of shit manages to squeak out among the farts.

So, today at work, we were having a little meeting to hear updates about how they are going to fill the positions in my group where ~ 60% of the people have left in the past year, and 30% of the wider division has.
The manager didn't show, so he just got the 3 of us remaining in a room to bitch about our jobs together. It was kind of funny, but the other guys started to complain about how there was nothing that could be done about it. I suggested that we could actually get together with us, and the other folks like us within the division, and hash out some consensus recommendations for how we could increase job satisfaction and improve turnover.
Everyone responded really positively to that is all gung ho about collaborating and leading the charge on this. I think it's funny, and kind of awesome, because everyone I've ever spoken to here is super negative about unions, but as I make my way out the door I've kind of slid them into a bit of collective action.

Hey job thread, I hope you all had great holidays.
I'm back at work now and the new year is off running, had a sit down with the higher ups today and they point blank told me that they are, and I quote, "incredibly lucky to have me" and want to keep advancing me very rapidly.
They also said that the rate I am going to be advanced at, and into a position that I am essentially going to get to evolve and make as I am advanced, is going to cause ripples in the office and expect push back and maybe even a bit of target on my head from coworkers based on how rapidly I'll be chugging along.
So I am both very excited and a little bit terrified, wheeeeeeee

My mum is part of this, I don't know what you call it, a club? Like Rotary if anyone knows that. Pretty sure it's not a cult. Anyway they have dinner meetings once a month and usually get a guest speaker, and this month that guest speaker is... me. I am to go there and talk to them about my time in South Africa and show off some photos etc.
My problem is knowing what specifically to talk about, as I was out there for years and have to fit a talk into 15-20 minutes. As you guys kind of bore witness to my time there I was wondering if any of you have suggestions on any topics you think I should cover? What would you find most interesting to hear about?

Maybe a rough outline of what the job was and a couple of examples? I would definitely mention Elephants Vs Plumbing as a fun aside and iirc you did a tagging/vet thing with an absolute unit of an animal that had a lot of cool pics for slides.

You could probably fill 20 minutes purely on how you turned "I always wanted to do this" to "I did this".
I guess it depends whether you want to stick to your personal story (why you went, what challenges you faced, why you came back), or go for the wider environmental story and tell them about the challenges faced by the remaining creatures that we haven't managed to wipe out yet.
"Times critters disrupted our living spaces" might also work as a theme.
I'd happily look at your pictures and hear you talk about it for 15-20 hours, nevermind minutes.

In addition to the wildlife shenanigans, I always liked your stories about the new batches of volunteers starting out as helpless baby birds and then growing into more or less competent grown-up birds by the end of the season. I think a personal growth capper is always going to go down smooth for Rotary-style organizations.
Smof, I forget if you are also still job hunting, but if you are this is a good opportunity to flex a little! Who knows who will be in the audience. But you have so many good, fun stories (elephants vs water, all the big cat stuff, and more besides!) And obvious passion and knowledge of environmentalism, as well as people training skills! I don't doubt at all you could weave those three pillars into something with an aside about ," so I was delivering pizzas, but then kicked ass and did this super brave thing..."
You'll have a talk that's both engaging for everyone (personal conflict! Animals! success in adversity! Heartstrings!) But also basically a "smof is awesome" talk.
This got off the rails a little, but go you, don't forget how much ass you've already kicked.
Get your flu shots y'all. Never too late. Don't listen to docs and nurses about statistics, they are real real bad at it. Most people are. The CDC has people for that. They are good at it! Listen to them! (Yes earlier would have been better for your flu shot but it's like working out, may as well do it, even if it's suboptimal.)

What’s the audience like? General age range and where are they at in their life?
Like, for example if it’s a younger pre college crowd I would focus more on say how you turned your dream of going there into going there. Middle aged crowd that is likely to travel? Some of your experiences that show off the beauty and the wonder of where you were to make them want to travel. Are they older and retired? Speak to the life lessons you learned and how it has shaped you into a wiser person today.
As you said you need to condense years into minutes, so I would try to figure out what minutes would be most interesting to this crowd.
Also go picture heavy and talk about being in close proximity to these animals every day and the little things you learn as it's something they'll likely never experience or find out otherwise.
From what I recall from your posts here, you've probably got enough material just from talking about all the times elephants fucked around with stuff at the base/camp.
