PA Game Of The Year 2018 - Nominations finished. Voting thread up soon (ish)

It's that time of year. I can tell because my inbox actually gets messages in it.

You all know the drill by now. MCC did some awesome work with these and we now carry it on each year. @Infidel hosts and does all the wonderful techie bits. I just chuck up a list of all the games released in 2018 and you guys tell me what I've got wrong and what I've missed. We then vote on these and ultimately Beat Saber wins. Or something else, I dunno, I'm so out of touch this year.

Here's the bit I steal every year:
There are a lot of Game of the Year polls out there, but this one is special. Where most GOTY polls just give you a list of maybe five of the best-selling games from the last year, and ask you to choose your favorite, THIS poll gives you a list of EVERY game that came out in the last year (more or less) and asks you to vote for [up to] your top 20-- ranked by how much you liked them. Here's last year's poll if you want to see how this works. We actually wind up with a serviceable ranking of the top hundred or so games from the last year, with blockbusters, obscurities and cult hits mixed in side by side, and a pretty color-coded graph.

Remember, the point of this is to have the most comprehensive list of games possible! So any game that anyone might POSSIBLY put in their top 20 deserves to go on the list. This year more than ever I've likely missed a chunk of really good indie games, and included a shed load of titles I probably shouldn't.

The usual rules are:

* It must have been legally released IN AMERICA for the first time in 2018
* It must be a new game-- no ports, no expansion packs.

We can try to be flexible about these rules. But here's the underlying point of the rules: Every game gets one shot.

Now they WERE the rules. Many other GOTY polls have started to be flexible and I'd like to use this nomination thread to also discuss any rule amendments. What does Early Access really mean? When does a remaster go far enough to be counted as a new experience? This is our poll, and we get to decide what goes on it. Do we add in remastered? Complete editions? Early Access titles? Do we try to judge when a title has reached peak popularity rather than when it officially released? Can I vote for Night Trap? Do we want a separate "platform" for VR? Should it be split between PCVR and PSVR?

Anyway, here is the games list: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/17iUxJf5xgG73RMLXYQxO2i-RBGZGcYl6jTz5MHVsKDc/edit?usp=sharing

And here it is in text, I'll try to keep this up to date with any amendments made to the Google Sheet. You'll see that in the google sheet there's a column to highlight remasters/re-releases/early access. We might not use these but feel free to fill them in if you happen to know them, it might help inform discussion on if we keep them in or not.

If you add/remove items from the google sheet it'd be worth letting us know in thread:

Going to argue on Yakuza Kiwami 2.

It shares a story, but the game is brand new. New missions, new mini games, new side stories, new fighting style.

And added in a Majima Story mode which is completely new.

I think basically splitting the difference would be the core feature set (story, gameplay) of a game. If its mostly the same I'd argue for not including it, if it has an expansion pack attached to a rerelease... Ehhhh

Because by this stage of the generation we're going to reach that point where not only are all the timed exclusivity deals that Sony and Microsoft make going to start expiring, but every indie developer is going to start spooging their whatever on the Switch and that's just going to inflate the numbers

(I say this mostly because if left as is Katamari Rerolled would be the best game in this list and compared to most of the rest it wouldn't even be close. And that's not fair for the rest of these games! :P)

Yay! Thanks for putting this up. As always, I have many suggested additions, but I will wait for the link to add them myself. In the meantime, a couple of entries worth discussing:
    • Deltarune: is this a demo? Taking these notes into consideration, there's not really a guarantee that there will be a full version, but if there is it will only be one further release rather than multiple episodes. My personal inclination is that it stay on the list, but maybe retitled as Deltarune Chapter 1.
    • Fortnite Battle Royale: will this be the year Fortnite makes it onto the list, or will we do the traditional thing and wait for it to be officially out of early access? Are Battle Royale and Save the World the same game or two different games? Fortnite is significantly different even on a month to month basis, could it even make sense to just include it as an option every year from now on? It's probably the game I put the most hours into in 2018, but I'm afraid I have no answers to these questions.

Also, great work, Lawndart. But Subnautica came out of early access this year as well as getting console releases, and it looks like it was excluded from previous polls, so I think this is actually its time to remain.

Cheers guys, I'll get the changes and additions done and upload the google spreadsheet tonight.

Also I think Fortnite should go on, and that we should start to do away with the "No Early Access" rule. Early Access has changed significantly from when that rule was implemented. I think as long as a game is close to its peak of popularity (and it's fairly difficult to judge, I know) then it should go on.

Potentially the same with some remasters. Things like Spyro - it's been that long and the remaster involved so much work that I'd argue it should be eligible. (I'd probably vote for Shadow of the Colossus)

Regarding remasters, my suggested rule would probably be whether the two are different enough to count as separate entries if we were to run an 'all-time' poll, but I don't feel strongly about this.

I'm mixed on Spyro because they clearly rebuilt the games from the ground up and just did it in a way that remained faithful to the design tenets of the original titles. But then I could say the same for Katamari, which is technically remade in Unity with emulation of the finer points like physics from the PS2 files and stuff.

    That'd be super nitpicky though

Well, easy way to think about it:

Do people want to vote on remakes/remasters/early access?
Would anyone be pissed off if a remake/remaster came high up the list?

If the consensus is a "Yes" followed by a "No" then I think we just throw them in.

This isn't because it makes curating the list easier each year. Not at all. Nope.

I think the general rule of no ports, re-releases, and remasters is for the best. Unless there is a significant difference in either the game or a really big time gap. Like I would probably let Spyro in because of how old the games are plus they basically made a brand new game that just emulates the originals. But like dark souls remaster is out because it is mostly an upres with a few tweaks to the lighting engine. Just my two cents.

Was the Crash Bandicoot remake in the list last year?

Spyro looks like more of that, but I haven't actually played it so I can't say how different it is from the classic ones.

I would say something like the new RE2 is a good candidate for a remake in this list since it looks to completely look like a new game.

If you showed the two games playing next to each other to someone who's never seen it, would they able to tell the difference? Might be a good way to think about it?

I propose we run a poll just for voting yes or no on whether each remake should be included in the other poll or not. I think I'm joking.

+1 Putting Fortnite: BR in the 2018 list so it can get #13th place and we don't have to worry about it next year.

I'm still against putting early access titles on the list. It just creates an uneven playing field.

Either you're judging a game, that has not officially released, as if it was a fully released title, and thus dock it for excessive bugs, balance issues, missing features or whatever, even though the game may never even have been presented as being complete yet. Otherwise, you have make an exception for those issues because the game isn't "done" yet, which is kind of shitty when it's going to get compared to a ton of games that are "done" and thus will get dinged for any unfinished issues.

The solution, IMO, is to just wait for the game to come out of early access before it's eligible. That's the dividing line where an issue goes from being something you can excuse, to something you can judge on. Coming out of Early Access should be considered the developer going "We're ready for our work to be judged."

Fornite is a weird case where it probably should have come out of early access ages ago. However, Epic still finds it necessary to label it as Early Access, so that's on them if it's not eligible for the list.

    EDIT: Remasters/Remakes are weird.

My stance on it is how much of it is emulating the original, and how much of it is a game that's just inspired by the original. If it's the same levels and same characters, often with extremely similar controls and game feel, just with shiny new graphics on top of it, I would call that a game that already came out and thus as ineligible as a GotY edition would be.

I didn't play WarioWare and thought it was just a collection of the old games. Looking at some videos, it looks like they do some clever things and combines the different games in cool ways that I could see it in here. It's a bit more than just"play any of the WarioWare games."

The other ones mostly look like nicer versions of the original? I get that some of them were kind of made from the ground up (vs. just up-resed) but did they add much more to the actual game?

I don't play enough Early Access to really weigh in on that, tbh the whole concept still kind of confuses me. I thought Fortnite was out of Early Access when they added the actual Fortnite mode/put it on PS4?

Nope, it still says "Early Access" when you load the game as far as I know, even on PS4 (despite the PS4 having no Early Access system)

I think "Early Access" should not be a hard rule. Let us use our judgment to put a game in this years list or wait. Just keep the rule of only showing up once.

It makes little sense to me to have situations where the "real" #1 game of the year not even on the list because despite crazy popularity and review it's "Early Access." The industry has definitely changed over recent years.

I do think that there’s a distinction to be made between a port and a remake. If there are no objections, I think Capcom Beat ‘Em Up Bundle and Okami HD are probably safe to come off.

Noticed some old games, too: Hellblade (2017), Salt and Sanctuary (2016), & Stardew Valley (2016).

Red Faction Guerrilla is purely a remaster and not a remake.

For me a remake has to add or change the original game substantially to count. Tetris Effect should certainly be on the list, while Borderlands 2 VR is a maybe, while ports and remasters are almost always a hard no.

Keeping EA games off does make sure that games aren't judged too prematurely. I'm hoping Subnautica is in the top 10 this time but if it was being judged by its first few EA builds I doubt it would place that highly.

Like I said earlier, let Fortnite on, it'll end up mid-teens and we all move on with our lives. They're more than happy to charge microtransactions, so I'm more than happy to rank them as a game in Early Access in name only.
