People love collectibles, and people love the grumps

I'd say it was a great idea

Again, not for me, but super happy and proud for Arin. That's dope, and he works hard for that money.

Edit - subreddit comments coming in clutch. "He is the ARPEEGEE boy! HE IS THE ONE WHO PINS!"

Side note, first time going there in a while, but the subreddit is going crazy with Dan's girlfriend post on Instagram. I sometimes forget how insane the GG community is sometimes, but good lord.

I hope Dan is happy and can continue to be happy in his relationship without too much vile from the 'lovelies'. Arin & Daniel Avi-Daniel both deserve to have normal lives without being harassed.

Yeah as much as i love being part of groups some fandom's just make me want to avoid them with a 10 foot pole and the GG Subreddit is one of those places.

Threads like these are 100x better just a bunch of casual fans enjoying the content.

I'm super not interested but doing those pins was definitely a great idea, and great that he got to do all the art for them.

edit: I too frowned super hard when I saw the price tag before I remembered that they're always way too expensive like that.

I just hoke Arin doesn't get sucked into the hole that is "random bags"

Like it NEEDS to be done for pins because of the tradeable aspect. But its the same mentality that makes all that kind of thing work in video games now. Like, as much as people hate on RNG boxes, companies can get away with continuing to do it because IT WORKS. As Arin kind of saw. It works really, really well. So it is scary to see him see that massive success because he needs to know what to do with it.

Kind of a great power great responsibility kind of thing. Hes a super duper standup dude though so I don't doubt him. But he could literally be sitting on a goldmine there.

  • halkunhalkun Registered User regular
Well, I was wrong. Not only are the pins successful, but it seems he was charging too little. The product isn't for me, but gotta hand it to Arin for reading demographic. I stand corrected.

I dunno, the whole twitch streamer scene kinda horrifies me not necessarily in how much money people will give these guys, but how and why.

Like, pins, okay, alright, you guys have me convinced that this is just something I don't get and has value. Okay.

But when I watched the stream last night and saw people lay down $100 for their comment to be super-highlighted for the nanosecond that it existed on the screen?

Like, wtf people? On one hand, I'm glad to see these guys do well, but on the other, there's an entire culture here I will never understand.

  • Kai_SanKai_San Commonly known as Klineshrike! Registered User regular
Oh I don't understand that at all either. The reasoning is because in order to get that person to keep playing for them as much as they do, they need money so they are essentially paying to have them continue to do content. The name coming up thing is just a bonus. I would HOPE that is why most of them are doing it. But well, people who have money to spend (or don't and have no control) do weird things.

The bags actually did contain a small amount of weed.

You know, I never really thought about it, but they don't have a Patreon or any other way to really support them beyond merch, right?

I could definitely see people tossing in bucks via donations for how much content they've put out over the years. Especially with how much Youtube's been hosing them with The Algorhythm (tm).

Another thing I was thinking about with the Arpeegees and why they might be so popular - it's physical media drawn by Arin, which as far as I know is suuuuper few and far between.

I can't think of anything they've sold other than the Grump heads which Arin's drawn.

  • El FantasticoEl Fantastico Toronto, ONRegistered User regular
I honestly think it's a combination of things for the ArPeeGees.

    - Pins. They're so hot right now (see Pinny Arcade related threads and page on the PA store for all the proof you need)

    - Random loot/gambling addiction. Think about when loot crates were (still are?) popular. People love the perceived value of paying a sum of money for something totally random in their purchase, and Arin hit the jackbox with the video that got him two rares and an ultra. He could've opened a bag and got 2 commons and an uncommon, but the minute he changed the perspective of the value of the bag by opening it and getting way more from it, that probably triggered a switch for people who have the personality to want that rarity. Which leads to...

    - "Rarity." Unlike the pins sold on the PA store, GG's pins are already a full set, but only 3 in a bag, and some of them are rarer than others. The perception that there's something better in every bag has massive appeal to some people. PA sells blind boxes, but they're mostly of old pins that have been sold in the past, and maybe some current stock, if I'm not mistaken. But PA never put out a blind box of 12 brand new pins, never sold before, and told people that 50% of those pins are rarer than the rest.

    - GG Merch. I've no doubt that some people are just fans and wanted to buy the pins. It's a small collectable, and whether you end up with the whole set or not, you have something personally made by an artist you appreciate and support. As other people have mentioned, during their live streams, people are donating large sums just to get their comment visible and read live. People have disposable income, and they're happy to show their support.

I mean, I know we all gotta be outraged over SOMETHING but these look pretty dope. I was tied up in meetings all day or I'd have tried to get a pack.

I don't think people who have an issue with blind box purchases and the psychology at work with them are just looking for something to be outraged by. You're certainly allowed to disagree! But some people find that to be a valid criticism.

I'm on the tail end of my very first playthrough of the game and.....I dunno! I hated it at first, but then I:

    1. Started getting into the game proper, and started insta-killing whole waves of bad guys with Blizzara

    2. Built myself a giant-ass gummi ship with a million guns and heavy armor on it and just go pchoo pchoo pchoo to my heart's content.

That first hour or two, though. I nearly stopped playing, it was so bad.

I mean, I'm not saying that I personally am that type, but I know some people who get obnoxious after a few drinks. It's the kind of thing you see in other people that made me think "I will never that drunk because I don't want to be that guy."

I just get giggly and stupid when I've had a few drinks, but I've never slapped someone like what I've witnessed from people in my social circle.

No offense taken, and I knew it wasn't directed personally at me. I'd try to avoid those types of people, too. I'm all for like, rounds of drunk Mario Kart, but if I know you're an aggressive personality after a few drinks, don't touch my controllers, or be prepared to pony up for replacing them once you lose.

First few hours of Kingdom Hearts are slooooooooooooooow. Camera is clunky, the Destiny Island and Alice's world feature terrible platforming objectives, it's just not great. It does get better though. I wasn't big on the gummy system.

KH2 is insanely more polished and just a better game overall.

  • ThawmusThawmus +Jackface Registered User regular
I wasn't big on the gummy system until my wife was stuck on the phone and I was waiting for her to get off the phone (she's been navigating for me via her old game guide with stickers and shit), and decided to fuck around with learning the garage controls.

Then she got off the phone and I had a modified Gepetto with Ketchup and Mustard coloring everywhere and it looks like a spraypainted Borg Cube. She frowned, then laughed as I blew through missions, unable to even really take damage from anything.

KH2 isn't really any better with the slow start either. Roxas' starting area is one of those experiences where maybe it's tolerable the first time through when you don't realize what you're about to have to go through but once you've familiarized with it, it profoundly discourages future replays.

Here’s something that blew my mind when I heard about it:

You don’t have to do it.

Other than the actual critical story stuff, you don’t have to do shit. The mini games are superfluous
