It's been awhile since I've played the previous games but man, not only does the difficultly seem higher the balance of land and air per mission is tricky. Seems like almost every mission I have to pick one special weapon or the other, which makes half of the mission easy and the other half hard as hell. Maybe I should invest more in regular mission parts vs special improvements.

There keeps being a bunch of "attack lots of ground target" missions so I keep using the A-10 with the good ground missiles. These cut scenes with everyone flying super rad air fighters and then me in the butt ugly A-10 is hilarious.
You take that back right now!
But it sounds like farts when you fire that gun.
Well, I haven't played AC7 yet, but IRL it sounds like farts when you fire that gun.
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.

The Sukhoi Su-25 is a "cuter", less ugly ground attack aircraft. Of course, it's not quite as old (though it's hardly young either), and it has merits and flaws next to the A-10. And it's still "homely" at best.
It looks less like something out of Warhammer 40K. One could certainly make the case that it's a little boring by comparison.

Brazil produces a very good budget CAS option in the Super Tucano.
While it is the "budget" option, it is still really effective for the types of conflicts most people fight.
Actually Brazil and South Africa both produce very solid "budget" hardware for militaries. It used to be that smaller (economically if not geographically) had to either do with leftover NATO or Soviet junk. Thanks to Brazil and South Africa they now have a third option and it's a damn fine one.

The sound in real life is considerably more brown note inducing.
Yeah, especially if you worked as a field journalist for Al-Jazeera.
Just a reminder that the cult of worship around the A-10 is weird. There are plenty of military and civil jet aircraft, or older, that I think are masterful pieces of engineering (in some way, they virtually all are) and even aesthetically pleasing, but none of them even approach the weird fetishism that surrounds Fairchild's A-10.

I had a joke loaded about NATO junk, and my own very limited experience with it as a conscript, but the somewhat recent spell of AH-64 crashes mostly just left me sad and worried. :bigfrown:

Well the A-10 is ugly in an endearing way. Plus it is really, really, really good at its job.
The sound of its engines alone is enough to get most people to peace the fuck out of the fight. Then you have the sound of its gun which if there is anyone left they're probably running for it now too.
The plane can also take an absolute beating and still remain combat effective.
The Air Force hates it because they consider CAS operations to be beneath them, but let me tell you the guys and gals on the ground? They fucking love the A-10 and its pilots.
Another thing of note is that it flies low and slow enough that the pilots can actually see the people they saved cheering their asses off and CAS operations are one of very few in which the pilot is in radio contact with the troops on the ground. I imagine job satisfaction must be pretty high for A-10 pilots.
The Army loves the A-10, Air Force not so much. In fact the Army has threatened on numerous occasions to add the A-10 to its arsenal if the Air Force tries to get rid of it.
edit- Or to sum up.
The A-10 has an immediate and visible impact on the battlefield from the perspective of the troops on the ground in a manner no other aircraft does.
You call in an air strike and several minutes later there is an explosion and the enemy has stopped shooting at you.
You call in an A-10 and you hear the A-10, you see the A-10, you see the pilot, you're talking to the pilot on the radio then suddenly the sound of armageddon and the enemy has stopped shooting at you. The pilot waves, you wave, pilot tells you to stay safe and they're off.
Both accomplish the same goal, but they are two very different experiences.

Yeah, the reasons for the fetishism aren't surprising in the least. Just weird. If it hadn't been around for 50 years, that wouldn't be true obviously.

It's not about the plane or ground attack aircraft. The plane is a secondary concern of little importance. The fascination and love is for the GAU-8.

Probably. I just makes the fetishism weirder and creepier, and adjacent to existing gun fetishes.

Was going to mention this. This is 95% of the fetishism concerning the A-10. For those of us that are old enough to remember when the plane was in it's initial service run, the other 5% of the fascination was that it's design looked like a modern (at the time) take on a WWII design. Combine that with milk-bottle sized depleted uranium firing at 65 per second and, well...
The hub seems like overkill, but hey, you can never have too many USB ports.
I’d agree except that the flightstick takes up one, VR takes up one, wireless headset control unit takes up one, charger cable takes up one, and one more for the external hard drive. Adds up fast.
So update: the HOTAS 4 feels outstanding. I wish it had a bit more weight in the base but it feels great and responds awesome. Only thing I’m a bit baffled on is how to perform a high G turn with it. If anyone happens to know or find out do let me know.
That said after getting used to it I had a moment where I was being pursued, pulled back hard on the throttle to a near stall, enemy blows past me. I open the throttle back up full bore, feather behind them using the rudder control, and let loose a missile, immediately painting them with the gun reticle and taking them down in a hail of gunfire. It felt incredible.
I know I’m nerding out a bit here but I grew up on flight sims, yeah it’s just a plastic controller, but the feeing of the flightstick in one hand and throttle in the other and pulling off shit like that is just the best, it transports me right back in time to younger me with a Sidewinder Pro in hand flying through the virtual skies.

@Blackhawk1313 The left hand top thumb button is an airbrake button. Throttle full forward and hit the button.
Also, you can yaw with the joystick and not just the throttle rocker, if you hadn't tried it already
Figured this out immediately after posting, thanks though! And yeah you can twist stick for yaw as well, throttle control just feels better to me for it.

The question is did HOTAS+PSVR get you sweaty?
So the answer to this is it got my adrenaline pumping hardcore, didn’t get sick which was awesome, definitely have to take a break after one mission by oh my god it was incredible.
Story: 8/10 - Way better than AC6 but not as good as AC5. Maybe on par with AC4, hard to tell as nostalgia is powerful for those.
The plot was just kind of messy. I think you were part of 3 different groups by the end. I was hoping you might stay as the penal squad to save the day; having fake Martin Sheen berating you right till the end.
Gameplay: 9/10 - Overall I think this had the best mission variety. The physics were actually pretty interesting, having wind and getting pulled into drafts.
A good mix of ground battle, escort, and unique (spotlights in the canyon). Having to ID targets was painful but kind of rewarding. The final big fight was amazing. Docking 1 point for the tunnel...
Graphics: No score as you can't compare. I thought the cloud stuff was just going to be gimmicky, but I think it worked out really well. I can't wait to try the VR missions.
Music: As always top notch. I'd put it with AC6 for having a great theme that gets remixed in different ways. AC5 is still probably my favorite though.
Overall, really really happy to be playing AC again. Hopefully this does well so they keep making them. I can't imagine what AC8 would be like on the PS5 and/or PSVR2. I think my biggest beef is with the targeting system. Maybe it's just been awhile and it's the same in AC5/6, but when I'm pointed at a TGT enemy and the targeting picks the APC next to it first, there is an issue. This gets really bad in some missions that have a ton of targets in them. Sometimes it seemed to work right and others not at all, so I wonder if it's just a bug.
While I didn't like the Aircraft tree at first, it does give me a bit more motivation to play through again to get the SU line of fighters.

I agree with everything you say and yes, the targeting system in this game is trash. It really needs a second pass.

Agreed on the targeting being awful. Love every other bit of this game big time. VR is awesome, wish it was longer, but you’ll love it.

Wait, you have 5's story ahead of 4's?
Just barely and it's mostly just based on memory. I played AC4 a couple times and loved it, but I played through AC5 3 or 4 times. I mean AC5's story spawned Zero, which shows you it's at least one of the more popular ones.
Weirdly I never played Zero. It came out while I was still heavy into WoW. Is there a upscaled version of it out?
I still think 4's story is very minimal and barebones. I can say a little about some of Yellow Squadron's pilots maybe, but even excluding Mobius One...I really couldn't say anything about anyone on your side.

No, but it will run on PCSX2 with a little perseverance.
Well I got my code from Amazon finally so I'll probably give AC5 a crack. Weird how they went through this trouble to emulate it but it looks like they aren't offering it to buy outside of the pre-order.
It does, you just need to run it on software mode solely off of CPU, that's what I did with my backup.
Even then it does not run correctly. It "works" but there are still lots of graphical glitches, particularly involving the player's plane. IIRC there might have been hit-detection issues with missiles also.
I would check out it's emulation page. I know there is a sound fix I needed to apply. But I've played the game from start to finish on an old i5 without only about 10% slowdown in 3rd person view. I'm a stickler for visual glitches and on my run, the black terrain, weird sky box, and black plane only happened when I had hardware enabled.

Done the first mission multiple times on hard mode, spawning the Ace, and waiting for more enemies to spawn but it's still giving me A.
