There are always multiple active flu strains, and since it's important to start producing vaccine early they kinda have to guess which will be the major active ones that year.

It will pretty much 100% make them all less severe though, though that can be really hard to notice anecdotally.

Oh I know, I'm just kinda.... You know, mad, right now.

Our 8 month old has had a fever for 2 days. I am sure it is related to teething. It has been manageable with meds and seems like it may have broke just before bed time. Here is hoping.

I have been a bit nervous about it though because we know of two kids who recently had febrile seizures.

So I took my son out of his bed after his morning nap today and I was walking across his room to the sofabed there to sit with him while he woke up properly.

While walking and holding the baby in my arm, my foot got tangled in one of his toys that was out of my field of view and I fell.

I did that parent thing where you instinctively protect the kid and I managed to toss him onto the couch where he landed safely and laughed cause he took a fly through the air while half awake.

Meanwhile I was still falling, and I managed to completely slam my knee into the steel frame of the sofa bed. My knee got one of those cuts where the skin just bursts open from pure impact and it instantly started swelling. I couldn't stand up, I started shaking.

Luckily the baby was totally happy, playing with his toys, cruising around his room and taking care of himself. On the floor I called my wife who was able to come home from work and look after him because he's super active these days and I couldn't really see myself keeping up with him.

My knee feels much better now which I'm happy about. Hurt like a mother fucker for a few hours though.

The instinct is real. I fell off our porch while stepping down once, holding our son who was maybe 6 months at the time. I spun in midair so that I landed on my back, but I couldn't really break my fall without letting him go. Hurt real bad and got pretty scraped up, but he was totally fine aside from not being too happy about the sudden thrill ride.

I see I’ve stumbled into the super hero thread.

Couple nights ago I reflexively caught a dinner plate that our eldest daughter was trying to eat from but had made it start flying off the table. The trajectory was aiming directly for our youngest daughter who was set up in the bouncer next to us on the floor. All the food spilled but in a neat pattern around the bouncer and the ceramic plate was secure in my grip. My wife said, “good work” and we continued on with the evening.

3 hrs and some antibiotics + ibuprofen later, and she transformed from the miserable girl on the left to the happy girl on the right:

This morning I was chilling out and letting Abigail watch some youtube videos. She was on a Peppa Pig kick this morning, which isn't a surprise since she loves the show. But then I hear Donald Trumps voice and turn around to this...

Look, I get the Internet can be a wonderful and scary place, but I honestly don't even know what to think about this video. Probably best to block the page at the very least. Fortunately she didn't seem involved with it and moved on quickly, so that's a good sign at least.

Hey all, I need to rant about grandma, aka my mother-in-law:

Yesterday she stopped by for pre-Lunar New Year's dinner. When talking about the kids, I casually joked that maybe Luke will have tattoos when he gets older. She got so upset, saying her grandson will not be a hoodlum. Because we all know that people with tattoos are hoodlums.

Egging her on, I said that you never know what he'll grow up to be. She said, "He'll be a college graduate, working at a good paying job, and married to a beautiful woman."

"Or a beautiful man.", I quickly replied.

Oh man, she lost it. "I'd rather him have all the tattoos than be that." We went back and forth on that for a bit before dropping the subject all together.

Like, I already knew she was racist and sexist, so I shouldn't have been surprised she was anti-LGBT and tattoos as well. It's so sad and infuriating. She's lived in America for over 30 years and still has those ingrained Chinese prejudices that she can't get over.

Guess it just means that I'll have extra careful with the kids in explaining that grandma shouldn't be listened too for life advice or beliefs.

To be fair, those are not exclusively Chinese prejudices. You can find plenty of Americans with the same issues.

And on the flipside, similarly, you can have Chinese who don't have those prejudices (although I'll grant that the culture as a whole is more "conservative").

But yeah, based on your past stories I had a really good idea of where this was going right away :P. You have much more patience than I do!

To be fair there isn't that much in prevailing US culture over the past 30 years to disabuse her of any of that. I don't feel the need to sit here and pretend this country is or ever has been a safe haven on any of that stuff, it's all still plenty out there. So many people have grown past it, but you know.. they've grown. Especially when you consider that a lot of the stuff you're talking about is only finding wider acceptance over the past 10 years or so.

That said, we were definitely going to have to do something similar with my in-laws. Just because I don't expect someone to come out a fully-formed person because a law was passed doesn't mean my kids need to listen racist politics with dessert. :P

He shows a bit of it in the middle with some of the sexualized content, but there's much worse. And he's right that it's not a far jump from something seemingly innocent to something actually nefarious.

He gives the content creators too much credit, though. They're not all in it for the ad revenue, there is grooming going on. And videos that are meant to trick kids/parents, like 10 minutes of a cartoon and then suddenly in comes someone with a rifle and executes all of them.

It's just so fucked up. Look up "Elsagate" as one example.

I remember hearing about it peripherally, though I don't remember the specifics. Everything he shows in his examples is terrible, but most of it more obnoxious visual poison than anything. I hated watching my son stare at that kind of vapidity, and found them terribly unsettling, but that's the worst I saw firsthand for the most part. The one that really got me was of a little boy taping down a little girl pretending to be... whatever she was pretending. That was vomit-inducing. In cases like that, obviously it's terrible for the kids watching, but my heart aches for the kids taking part.

At one point I saw something on PDF (I think the segment was what actually got me watching him) about the channel with the guy who was gaslighting his kids (his partner helped sometimes) for views, and goading them into physically abusing each other on camera. It was awful, and posted as a "prank channel" with him saying everything was scripted and so of course there was no abuse there, the kids understood what they were doing, etc. That's not right and he is fucking those kids up while how many people watch, and last I heard he still had custody. I guess that's a whole other issue, but the fact that he can monetize videos of him traumatizing his kids and no one seems able to do anything about it is at least as upsetting to me as the abuse in the first place.
