AC7 does have the best "allied" super weapon mission in the series.
A combined air-ground defense of Stonehenge of all things as a counter to Arsenal Bird was a stroke of genius, as well as being a damn fun mission to play. They really nailed that mission.
Letting us roll around with laser weapons on our planes is kinda bonkers and I'm not sure how I feel about that. When I brought a laser cannon to the Mihael ace fight it went from being a classic Ace Combat duel to me going "oh, you think your railgun is cute? Watch this:"
It's saying something my favorite track pre-release is "only" my 10th favorite in game. :P However, there are some really, really good random mission tracks even better I think that some of the big trailer songs. Magic Spear and the boss theme for Mission #10 are some of the best in the series.
My only criticism is they reused the leitmotif maybe one or two missions too many, but that's like getting too much ice cream.

You can increase the game draw distances by editing the game's Engine.ini file located in "C/Windows/User/YOURNAME/AppData/Local/BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment/ACE COMBAT 7/Config".
Then add the following lines in the file:
[/script/engine.renderersettings]
r.ViewDistanceScale=10
r.SkeletalMeshLODBias=-2
r.StaticMeshLODDistanceScale=0.1
r.Streaming.HLODStrategy=2
I had been suffering from the super long menu transition bug. Turns out, for me at least, it was my keyboard causing it... Unplugging my keyboard causes the menus to immediately load.
Holy shit that draw distance fix makes a HUGE difference. If you've got a decent PC I highly recommend using it. I just ran mission 2 as a test bed for it since that's where I first noticed the awful draw distance and it was just trees as far as I could see with the fix implemented. 10/10 would dance with the .ini angels again.
The wingmen/women in this game are very, very good as well. No one was nearly as annoying as Chopper, and not a peacenik to be found (wanting peace isn't the same thing as whining about it DURING an op).
The game also does some pretty clever subversion of expectations with certain characters and countries. Major spoilers:
Pretty much EVERYONE who really studied AC lore was really bracing for die hard Oseans to be the "main" villain due to their economic takeover of Eursea via the Space Elevators. Turns out nope, Osea really was just trying to help their warmongering idiot transocean neighbors out of good will, and the former Free Eursean fanatics jumped at the chance to get Belkan drone tech to settle old scores.
Also, people were bracing for another "third front" situation like 5, with Spare squadron going rogue and uniting under the banner of the Princess. And again nope, the Princess was outright manipulated into shilling for an unjust war, and paid a horrible price for it.
You keep waiting for Count to get blown away for having the "gall" to be the one who's trying to rival Trigger and runs away when a fight is too dangerous. Only to get actual character development by becoming friends with Cyclops squadron and admitting he's not cut out for being a squadron leader. He also doesn't abandon Trigger during some of the game's most difficult missions and ultimately lives.
Of course Belka was at it again, but it was also directly address in game as, "this is totally a thing Belkans do", which wasn't expected at all.

Top to bottom, I think this is my favorite AC OST. Some of the other ones had better main themes and such, but so many good ones on this album. I even like the weird synth-y Space elevator track.
There's usually five or six killer great tracks in any Ace Game, even Joint Assault had Spiridus which was incredible. But overall, it's tied with 4 and AH for me for being the most consistently good like you said.
So the cutscene at the end of 19 makes it look like Count steered a missile into her that explodes, no parachute afterwards, and a helmet is seen falling and next mission she gets on the radio no problem
I don't know if I'm in the minority on this but I will still argue zero had the best sound track of any game. 7 comes in 2nd to 3rd depending on my mood
Campaign was pretty great 2nd best in the series. I give the edge to zero because of the ace fights and the amount of unlockables.
The rpg mechanics in this game are really fun. Turning my A-10 into even more of a bullet hose with the machine gun upgrades is really great.

The track for the towards the end of the game mission where you
Go to raid the Shilage Castle was a highlight for me. When the briefing started I was just like "...this is a terrible idea" and then the music kicked in and it was even more of a "THIS IS A TERRIBLE IDEA" feeling. Partly because you just know you're kicking the hornet's nest thanks to player knowledge, and partly because the music combined with the radio chatter really makes you feel less like a heroic fighter pilot and more like a raider just looting what they can to get by.
The Ultrawide Fix now has a slightly hacky, but working fix for the HUD. It does result in the HUD getting stretched a bit, but at least it's centered and usable now!
EDIT: Confirmed it works! The out of mission menus are a little goofy looking due to this being a pretty hacky fix, but they're perfectly usable and once you're in mission everything looks pretty damn great all things considered.
(The picture is small and crappy due to being a 2 second mspaint screenshot trim and resize)
Also pictured is the draw distance fix working fantastically.
Oof...the choices. So, I bought the game on PS4 and PC, but I only just today started playing. Well, wrapped up the second mission and can buy a new plane. The problem, though, is which tree to go down...
Option 1) as a child of the 80s, I absolutely loved Top Gun, so the F-14 is an obvious choice
Option 2) as an anime fan in the 90s, I absolutely loved Macross Plus...so the Su-47 is an obvious choice
I suppose I could do both: F-14 on PC and Su-47 on PS4...

F-14
(which leads to the F/A 18 so it's a double bonus to go down that tree)

Nice, I'm going to have to do all of these things.
Figured I should post a full resolution shot of both fixes and that plane in all their glory and I also included the tweak to turn chromatic aberrations off. I took the time to pop the screenshot open in photoshop to adjust it a hair this time :biggrin:
The most noticeable HUD glitch now in missions is just that the radio chatter text is off center but eh, I can live with that.
Finished up the last mission with 16 hours on the clock (including no mission replays and 4 MP TDM) - enjoyed the story overall, and even not being majorly into the Ace Combat lore everything else seemed to flow pretty well.
Final mission spoilers;
Seriously that mission can go to hell. Taking out the drones was easy enough in the Su-47, but the flying through the tunnel with randomly closing doors and the flying through the elevator caused me more mission restarts that I care to admit. That section was certainly frustrating and took away from an otherwise fun experience
End game lore spoiler;
At the very end, what was up with "Pioneer 1" - was that a call back to a previous game, or was that some sort of "flashforward"? That was the only part I couldn't piece together and I wasn't able to find anything relating to the callsign on the wiki

I hate to admit it but I actually 'beat' the mission and then couldn't find the way out of the base of the elevator.
I have no idea what the Pioneer 1 shit was about. It seemed totally out of left field and as far as I can tell was the first time it was referenced (at least in this game).

I was thinking that too, or possibly a DLC. Even still, it probably would have been better if it had been mentioned somewhere earlier in the game (maybe one of the earlier space elevator missions maybe, or during the briefing for the final mission).

Kei Nagase is one of your wingmen in Ace Combat 5. The unidentified voice on the radio could be Blaze. Anyway, I took it as a hint that they are planning a sequel to Ace Combat 5.
Spoilers for a mega old game, but it always cracked me up that the secret twist of AC3 was that you were an AI designed to see if it was possible for one pilot to change the course of a war single handedly, and the conclusion was that no, it was impossible.
Except for Mobius-1
And Phoenix
And Blaze
And Cipher
And Talisman
And Gryphus-1
And Trigger...
Did these corporate suits literally not even bother? :P

I kinda get the feeling that anything prior to AC4 is basically total horseshit.
The one thing I'm really missing in multiplayer is Assault Horizon's (or was it Infinity's?) matches with ground targets. I loved being a Su25 and just doing runs while the fights kept going around me.

So maybe I am being slow, but I still dont get it. An Ace from a previous game was given a Space-plane (in secret), to go and break up asteroids in the belt so there wouldn't be another Ulysses. And just by pure coincidence they want to dock at a space station (also a secret) at the top of the space elevator at the same time that Trigger liberates it from hostiles (that Pilgrim wouldn't even probably know about because the comms are down etc.
If that is it, then... why have that as a tacked on 30 seconds to the final mission. Sure, have it as a hook for DLC but then either leave all of it in DLC or have something about it through the whole game. e.g. The Belkan's really wanted the Space Station and set up the Eursea war as a cover etc.

All they needed to do was have a line in the mission briefing: "The Osean spacecraft Pilgrim 1 is scheduled to dock at the space elevator by XXXX. It is imperative that the elevator is fully under our control before docking procedures begin."

My take: This transmission is happening in real time and the Space Elevator leads to a Space Station that they're docking at. I wonder what KIND of ship they're in. I can imagine they went to the asteroid belt to break up larger asteroids like Ulysses
That was my take too, but I have no idea why they thought it warranted being in the finale of the game. It felt like they were trying to close a plot thread that had been cut earlier in production.
Kei Nagase is one of your wingmen in Ace Combat 5. The unidentified voice on the radio could be Blaze. Anyway, I took it as a hint that they are planning a sequel to Ace Combat 5.
Or something to that effect.
We're trying to keep Advanced AI Drones from transmitting their data to fully automated aircraft manufacturing plants and creating an Air Force that would completely control the skies and who knows where it would go from there. Who gives a fuuuuuuuck about Pilgrim One right now?
Plus, it was a 7 year mission. Even if they weren't at war I can imagine it's something that wouldn't be at the forefront of someone's memory

The first time I ever started with that set up it was fine, but ever since I can't start a game with special ammo.
Edit: For some reason the Mig-29 is fine with the exact same build, but the Mirage always bugs out for me in multiplayer.
The Mig has a fantastic alternate paint job though for beating it's ace so I guess I'll stick with that.
Edit: There is an ace guide here if anyone wants to chase them down. The first and second have great designs.
Edit 2: Some modders have worked out a fix for ultrawide monitors.

Faceless Soldier though is just life.
Have they fixed the hud issue yet? That's what I was waiting on.

Wat.
The game also does some pretty clever subversion of expectations with certain characters and countries. Major spoilers:
What am I missing?
Campaign was pretty great 2nd best in the series. I give the edge to zero because of the ace fights and the amount of unlockables.
The rpg mechanics in this game are really fun. Turning my A-10 into even more of a bullet hose with the machine gun upgrades is really great.
The track for the towards the end of the game mission where you
The Ultrawide Fix now has a slightly hacky, but working fix for the HUD.
(which leads to the F/A 18 so it's a double bonus to go down that tree)
I love love love this skin, I'm basically using the Mig for everything at the moment until I find a better one.
Nice, I'm going to have to do all of these things.

The most noticeable HUD glitch now in missions is just that the radio chatter text is off center but eh, I can live with that.

Final mission spoilers;
End game lore spoiler;
I have no idea what the Pioneer 1 shit was about. It seemed totally out of left field and as far as I can tell was the first time it was referenced (at least in this game).

I wouldn't put money on this, but I can see a scenario where it's hinting at the direction of the next game.
I was thinking that too, or possibly a DLC. Even still, it probably would have been better if it had been mentioned somewhere earlier in the game (maybe one of the earlier space elevator missions maybe, or during the briefing for the final mission).

I'd be 100% ok with them testing the waters via DLC for a SpAce Combat spin-off game.
TBH, it's a shame EA is busy completely fucking up Star Wars video games because Project Aces would be perfect for doing a new Rogue Squadron game.

And Trigger...
Did these corporate suits literally not even bother? :P
I kinda get the feeling that anything prior to AC4 is basically total horseshit.
