This song is stuck in my head pretty often. I hate being aware of this game but the only relevance it holds for me is that some speedrunners race it sometimes.

Oh, god, that Yu-Gi-Oh! game. It's terrible. Awful. I ought to know, I own a copy. Yes, the grind is just terrible and soul-crushing if you just want to beat the game. Nothing like pulling an amazing play to drop your strongest monster and then the computer literally dropping a monster that's nine times out of ten impossible to summon outside of a specific fusion (Gate Guardian, anyone?) and proceeding to annihilate it right from their hand. Good grief, Raigeki (think: Wrath of God) was pretty much required for the late game.

But seeing as this is the game music thread, allow me to drop a few favorites:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fy3s4Yaabfs

Earthbound. Quite literally the launching point into the final dungeon, and this music intrigued and terrified a younger me- playing and saving a quick bout of Earthbound before school and then thinking of this music as I was standing on the side of a foggy road, waiting for the school bus to appear, dark houses everywhere and no cars or life in sight... yeah, I was awake by the time the bus got there. Awake and terrified, but awake.

Pokemon, Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire. You're cruising Victory Road, almost at the end, and you come across your rival- in this version, a skinny little kid by the name of Wally. To say this kid's had it rough is nothing- in the beginning, he's really timid- you help him catch his first Pokemon, and over the game, you run into him a couple of times. The fourth time, during this meeting, he thanks you for helping to push him to get stronger- to show he could even have made the journey in the first place. Then the cute music that usually accompanies him fades out- and this starts playing, even right into the battle, as Wally outright challenges you, to show just how far he's come, and he just lets it all out. If you want, look up a video of this battle on YouTube; the amount of symbolism is amazing.

Pretty much anything Laura Shigihara takes on as a musical project seems to turn into pure gold. This is one of my favorite tracks she's ever done, based on "Corridors of Time" from Chrono Trigger. Just listen to it, and if you're not interested in the rest of her playlist, then, well... I don't know. She's also responsible for "Zombies On Your Lawn" from Plants vs. Zombies and the entirity of the game "Rakuen", as well as countless other projects she's given tracks to. But I think this one is one of, if not the best she's done.

I was always the one who went dragons in my early game build. Dragon scrolls plus rock monsters plus plant monster plus electric monster gave me a Twin-Headed Thunder Dragon, which was usually enough to beat the crap out of things. The only problem was unless you got the right hand, you could be fucked right out of the gate. And since any loss to anyone meant game over... it was worth it to simply grab two memory cards, start a play file on one and then a draw file on the other. Strip out what you wanted from the draw file and ship it on over until you had a deck for your preferences. I think I drew over ten decks and the best thing I managed was one Exodia piece...

But on to better music and better games.

Megaman X 3. Through the starting stage, it's looking fun, and- wait, X gets himself captured? Who's going to-

A panel in the ceiling pops apart, in comes Zero, and the music just got cranked to awesome. I don't care if it's already been posted, it's too damn epic to not repost.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lFsUvSI49I

Another Megaman track, this time from X8. I suppose someone figured that since the level itself is pretty much just a long, long gauntlet of fighting against smaller robots until you hit the top where the boss is, the very least they could do is give you a track worth rocking out to. I think they succeeded.

This one comes from Brave Fencer Musashi, a... platformer RPG? for the Playstation that Squaresoft brought over. This is from one of the ending areas, and it's probably the most cathartic part in the whole game. You've faced some tough fights to get here, and now it's finally time for a little payback as you emerge from the underground and start literally fucking up every enemy in sight. The track's title on the soundtrack pretty much tells you what you need to know- "Midair Giant Playground Battle". You've survived this far, and now it's time to cut loose and wreak some havoc.

Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, for the N64. Gorgeous Musical Castle, Part 2- quite literally the final dungeon. I remember the first time I got this far and just absolutely loving the music- because I had to play it straight through, no saves, because I didn't have a data cartridge for the N64, and not many games used internal memory for the saves! I do, however, remember keeping a save right outside so I could go and rock out and kick ass when I needed a nice confidence boost.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6cH_awyr8GI

While I'm on an N64 kick, Champion Lance's Battle Theme from Pokemon Stadium 2. Back in the days of Gold, Silver and Crystal, this was the big fun thing because it meant 3D competitive battling between two people. There was a mode by the name of Gym Leader Castle, where you had to beat a number of trainers and one of the Johto Gym Leaders per stop, as well as fend off a Team Rocket raid squad. After that, you had to face the Elite Four and then the Champion, all in one sitting. No saves, no breaks, no nothing. At any time, you flub up, you go back to the start of the Elite Four. Beat Will, Koga, Bruno and Karen? You get to face Lance and hear what I think is the most kickass theme in the game.

Sonic CD, Palmtree Panic - Good Future. The Sonic series has an absolute load of amazing music- Green Hill, Chemical Plant, Hydrocity, Flying Battery, Lava Reef, and more- but for something to just leave in the background while I get things done, this is my old standby.

Been playing Earthbound again, and found this. Smooth McGroove has always been one of my absolute favorite musicians- everything he does is acapella, and utterly awesome. Also, it's fun watching his vids to see when Charl (the cat) will show up. He usually makes one appearance per video.

Found Arathrum a while ago looking for Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon remixes, and he's got a bunch more stuff besides this, too. But I like his Goemon stuff.

Daniel Tidwell is another one I follow; and yes, I've played, beaten, and actually like Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. It's not the most complicated game, but it's a good stepping stone for people who don't want an overcomplicated game. Plus the music is pretty kick-ass, as seen with this from the final dungeon of the third area, the combination Volcano/Lava Dome.

There's a free option. I think it plays ads between every few songs.

That's the Capcom Sound Team page. You can listen to it all from there free, but you get ads and lower quality audio I think. You can pay monthly to get higher quality, no ads, custom playlists and some other stuff.

Fun fact: the time it takes for a character in Travis Strikes Again to hit the ground after jumping is more or less exactly the amount of time between the kick and the snare in the percussion line here.

I took advantage of that fact compulsively throughout this stage.

My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.
