Ah I love this time of year. This is the time of year where I get to use my scripted email that says, "Yeah the reason you're not able to log in and get your W-2 is that you don't work here anymore. You'll have to call Payroll."

In other news, my practice now has more women than men.

Not in the highest position though, don't be daft.

But in a few years who knows.

That's one of the shitty things in architecture. University, like 60% women, offices, maybe a 50-50 split, but as soon as you look at positions above maybe team lead it feels like 90% men. The whole field is at least partially stuck in the middle of the last century.

It's waiting on the current era of presidency and c-level positions within the architecture and engineering firms to finally fuckin retire or die. Seemingly the folks just below that layer get that changes absolutely need to happen. But the top layer is still insisting their world view is correct and its holding back the promotion of women beyond a certain level almost across the board. It's pretty fuckin infuriating to watch sometimes.

    Holy crap I agree!
As a consultant, change cannot come from the ground up. Once you try to change things and your manager/director/veep/whatever doesn't care, the change stops.
Great business for a consultant to basically take all the complaints that everyone tells you about the process or whatever, and give it to the managers paying you. Where they then completely disregard it because reasons.

But since they're determined to stick around and strip mine their company for all the value it has, the company just flounders and fails, but still inexplicably pays them a good salary.

So I've been pretty much just using Indeed and applying to random businesses that come to mind. Is Monster any good to use? Figure I could expand a bit. I do get emails from time to time from Monster but it is always some really random job that I have no business in like the medical field.

I've applied for some call center customer service positions and after thinking about it I felt some very serious dread about doing more call center work and dealing with humans.

I also wouldn’t discount Craigslist. I had better luck with getting responses through Craigslist than Indeed and both @Moriveth and I got our current jobs through Craigslist!

Edit: We both found more businesses advertising directly through CL, whereas Indeed is more of a base for recruiters.

I really hope I can grab our district manager next time he rolls through.

Our area absolutely was out of order. Things out of place, behind on schedule, and sharp hazards not properly disposed of.

The GM made the excuse of one of us was on vacation, rather than the fact that we are understaffed already, with one of us (me) working multiple departments because no one else can take on those duties, due to shit staffing.

    oh no

    we moved desks

i shoulda asked to stay sitting next to person i was sitting with before

new person next to me has um hm
    some BO issues hm

and there is no polite way to handle this tbh
i'm not gonna say anything i'm too scared

    oh no

I'm playing catch up, but this is something to bring to HR and Management.

Yep. Back at a previous workplace there was a guy that was essentially a social pariah because he had pretty bad BO.

I raised it with HR once I'd been there a couple of weeks and was told that no-one had ever actually raised it as an issue with them. I'd spent the weeks hearing about how smelly this guy was and how I shouldn't go near him or to hold my breath whilst walking through a section of the office and no-one had ever done anything about it, just bitched about it behind his back.

Turned out that it was a medical thing and he had just gone nose-blind to the fact that the antiperspirant he was using wasn't working anymore, so pretty much the day after he had a chat with the HR guy he was an entirely different person as people would then go over to talk to him, ask questions that would've previously been done over IM / email, etc.

It's a tough conversation to have but that's why you pawn it off to HR/ management.

It really depends on your area; different cities tend to rely on different systems

Monster in my town has always been the place to go if you want a gig in software and not much else. Eluta, Indeed or the government jobs site tend to be much more effective

Wife and son have the flu, so she is missing work. They closed the plant Sunday night for the Superbowl but didn't pay us. So now I have to work an extra shift just to hit 40 hours and then try and pick up another one to make up for my wife. At least I don't feel sick yet. Oh and we all got the flu shot which seems to have helped with my son at least. He is getting over it pretty quickly. Really wish we would have worked Sunday night. Fucking sports.

I need a different reason for why I want to leave my current job than the one about the whole toxic mold trashing my body and causing autoimmune encephalitis. I'm thinking about going with it wasn't challenging enough as they had just finished one major project and that a new one was indefinitely delayed. It has some elements of truthiness to it...

You've appreciated the job and everything you've learned from it but feel like you're ready for a new challenge.

I'm curious as to everyone's opinions on direct employer contact by jobseekers. I get these a ton, emails saying "Hi I'm Barry Pibblesworth and I'm a Voggo Specialist and I'd like to come and work at Penny Arcade even though you have no open positions for Voggo Specialists."

I've actually seen this as a recommended practise for jobseekers, which honestly kind of befuddles me, because I will, 100% of the time, assume this person is a schmuck who doesn't know how things happen. Could it be that I am the schmuck who doesn't know how things happen? Perhaps it's an American thing?

It's an older generation thing that I still see a lot where people above a certain age think 'just walking into a business and handing the manager your resume' is a good way to get an interview. You don't see it as much now, but it's still advice given by people over a certain age who thinks milennials not getting work is entirely due to laziness on their part.

... because when you've filled your head with things like tensile strength of 10 gauge aluminum wire, how to manually assemble heptane from those little atom balls, and how many 2 ohm resistors you need to use to get ~1.5 ohms of total resistance across a 3-path parallel circuit, simple things tend to fall out.

This is why I like managers at my work who are operators as opposed to engineers.

Engineers can take a spinning top and know everything about that top. Specifications, materials, calculations, etc etc.

Operators can actually spin the top.

I don’t feel comfortable driving my car in the snow (Moriveth drove it yesterday and confirmed that it handles spectacularly awfully) so I have asked Mori’s dad to drive me to work (he has a 4wd SUV).

Although I could probably work from home, more snow is predicted for the end of the week and the beginning of next and I need to get into work at some point, so these next three days are my best chance of doing so. I’ll take home some checks and a few files with me so worst case scenario I’ll be fully set up from working from home for the next few days.

I'm assuming based on Dyna's background that these were mechanical engineers as well? I could see an electrical engineer not needing to know (professionally, at least) things like Stress = Force/Area (or maybe it was a joke). I know I've jokingly written things like V=IR.
