Alright, let's specifically get into it

It's derivative of a bunch of things, but three of the specific things it's derivative of are Alien, Halloween, and Poltergeist

These movies might not seem like they have a whole lot in common at first - they're all horror movies from the late 70s/early 80s

But they're also all horror films with female leads, the equivalents of which, in Stranger Things, get consistently pushed into more passive roles by their male co-stars

I am of the opinion that Stranger Things does not improve upon its sources, and it is not a great use of my time

I would rather watch any one of the things Stranger Things ripped off than watch Stranger Things

I do not begrudge anybody for liking I thing I do not, of course. That should probably go without saying, but some times folks take such opinions personally

I know this is just changing a quote for comedic effect and I shouldn't be worried about misquotes and all of that

But the line is "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy"

The world exist doesn't appear in it, and is a common misquote

I didn't like it much because all of the nostalgia stuff is aimed at completely different people to me and goes right over my head. Without that the main things that stuck out were just the things they flat out stole.

I believe people that it's good though, I'm just not in the catchment area.

Netflix is a stronger sell here because shows on services which haven't migrated to Australia tend to wind up on there, but we'll see whether that holds up over time, since I think the CBS thing is coming here. What surprised me is that we didn't get Disney+ because Stan struck a deal to (seemingly) get all of that content on their service, which is impressive.

I'd want all their shows that Disney are terrible at putting out on DVD before I consider getting that, though.

One of the local bars turned their entire interior into the Upside down one year. And my friend, dressed as 11, asked me my thoughts on the show.

The Goonies is actually a very specific example of why I like Stranger Things

Stranger Things is derivative of a lot of things I'm aware of, but don't actually like that much

So the pitch for me is "Hey, what if The Goonies was any good" and that's a pitch I'm on board with

I imagine me and my wife will get a lot more use out of our Netflix account once we're off on parental leave.

We've just started watching Brooklyn 99. I think we watched the first two seasons a few years ago.

I don't remember the first season actually being this good!

Mainly keeping Netflix around for The Last Kingdom.

I really recommend Derry Girls as well. I think it's on American Netflix, whereas in the UK it's on All4.

This is kinda the point is that not all the things that stranger things is derivative of are like super progressive in any sense.

Linking its derivative nature to a reason it should have handled its female characters better is missing that the grander portion of things it's derivative of are like super bad at a bunch of that shit.

It's much easier to say, "It treats its female characters poorly", rather than trying to walk it through its derivative nature to that same point. Cause while it, by its nature, does pull from the movies original listed: aliens, halloween, and poltergeist, it also pulls inspiration from brat pack movies and stuff like the goonies which are super duper problematic in hindsight and didn't throw much if any strength to its female characters.
