well a fair number of people didn't like it to begin with, I think one of the common criticisms is that it's too derivative
then a few more people thought the second season was kind of just more of the same
Th-the whole fuckin point is to be derivative
Alright, let's specifically get into it
It's derivative of a bunch of things, but three of the specific things it's derivative of are Alien, Halloween, and Poltergeist
These movies might not seem like they have a whole lot in common at first - they're all horror movies from the late 70s/early 80s
But they're also all horror films with female leads, the equivalents of which, in Stranger Things, get consistently pushed into more passive roles by their male co-stars
I am of the opinion that Stranger Things does not improve upon its sources, and it is not a great use of my time
I would rather watch any one of the things Stranger Things ripped off than watch Stranger Things
I do not begrudge anybody for liking I thing I do not, of course. That should probably go without saying, but some times folks take such opinions personally

Stranger Things is a dude elbowing you constantly and pointing out he shares the same dvd collection with you.
Stranger Things exist in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

I am of the opinion that Stranger Things is just Fine and was baffled by some of the stronger reactions to it

You know I had a feeling that if anyone was going to respond, it was going to be you
I don't know if I mean that as an insult or a compliment, so take it as you will

I think it's a mostly harmless thing, but I got ragged on by the entire friend group for saying I thought it was "fine, but derivative" until I was a hissing cockroach of hate for Stranger Things.

I didn't like it much because all of the nostalgia stuff is aimed at completely different people to me and goes right over my head. Without that the main things that stuck out were just the things they flat out stole.
I believe people that it's good though, I'm just not in the catchment area.

Netflix is a stronger sell here because shows on services which haven't migrated to Australia tend to wind up on there, but we'll see whether that holds up over time, since I think the CBS thing is coming here. What surprised me is that we didn't get Disney+ because Stan struck a deal to (seemingly) get all of that content on their service, which is impressive.
I'd want all their shows that Disney are terrible at putting out on DVD before I consider getting that, though.

Yeah I don't think it's terrible or anything
It's just one of those largely unimpressive things that got very popular for a minute there
Which always tends to make me dig my heels in with my distaste

I mean it's also fairly derivative of the goonies which is literally a 2 hour dick joke.
I liked Stranger Things just fine. It was maybe not quite deserving of the amount of praise it got, but also I feel that way about so many things.

Well I've never seen The Goonies so I wouldn't know about that

I hated goonies as a child and was baffled by the amount of love people showed in when I became a camp counselor.
I thought “maybe I was thinking of a different movie”
But nope, it was the Goonies and I hated it.

If Disney+ has the old cartoons, and the Disney Channel Original Movies, those alone will get my subscription. If they offer a +Hulu subscription I would be double all in. That would be an amazing deal.
I remember liking The Goonies when I saw it, but then again that was at a theater screening of cult classic movies, so I think being around a crowd that was into it helped.
You know what was rad, though? Dead Alive.

I read that as “Dead or Alive” at first.

This is kinda the point is that not all the things that stranger things is derivative of are like super progressive in any sense.
Linking its derivative nature to a reason it should have handled its female characters better is missing that the grander portion of things it's derivative of are like super bad at a bunch of that shit.
It's much easier to say, "It treats its female characters poorly", rather than trying to walk it through its derivative nature to that same point. Cause while it, by its nature, does pull from the movies original listed: aliens, halloween, and poltergeist, it also pulls inspiration from brat pack movies and stuff like the goonies which are super duper problematic in hindsight and didn't throw much if any strength to its female characters.
I will give Stranger Things season 1 the credit that I sat down to watch the first episode, and it gripped me enough to watch the entire first season unintentionally.

I know this is just changing a quote for comedic effect and I shouldn't be worried about misquotes and all of that
But the line is "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy"
The world exist doesn't appear in it, and is a common misquote
I don't know if I mean that as an insult or a compliment, so take it as you will

One of the local bars turned their entire interior into the Upside down one year. And my friend, dressed as 11, asked me my thoughts on the show.
I just looked at my feet and shrugged defeatedly.
Stranger Things is derivative of a lot of things I'm aware of, but don't actually like that much
So the pitch for me is "Hey, what if The Goonies was any good" and that's a pitch I'm on board with
it wasn't quite as overblown as boondock saints but it was close
I thought “maybe I was thinking of a different movie”
But nope, it was the Goonies and I hated it.

We've just started watching Brooklyn 99. I think we watched the first two seasons a few years ago.
I don't remember the first season actually being this good!
Mainly keeping Netflix around for The Last Kingdom.
I really recommend Derry Girls as well. I think it's on American Netflix, whereas in the UK it's on All4.
I think that Groundhog Day is just TOO easy a line to drop
Heyooo
i had a phrase from it pop into my head last night, so i searched for it and ended up watching the first episode.
...still pretty good!

the loudest of them sounded exactly like Dylan from American Vandal
and I mean exactly, I had to take a close look to make sure it wasn't actually him
would y'all like to guess where this happened
