I remain moderately happy with Stargate.

    Some quibbles, of course
the constellations have probably moved quite a bit in the intervening 10,000 years. So they wouldn't match perfectly. Which would actually be a point in favor of the film if they had been adjusted to be an inspiration instead of one-to-one.

it's almost an issue that they hadn't just brute-forced the lock; they've explicitly tried the first six symbols in the right sequence, so it would be trivial to just try each of the remaining ones to see what happens. But this gets a pass because it's clearly putting a strain on the system to get that far, and they definitely don't know what would happen if they put in the wrong one.

On the other hand, they gloss right over how they activate the gate at the end without the hardware, so that's less good.

And I'm not sure what they were doing with the Stargate in the intervening 66 years (1928 to presumed-1994). The last attempt only lasted 'two years', though it's not clear if that's effectively 1992 to 1994, or if the project's been on and off hold for a while. But they can activate the gate without the tech (see previous point), so I'm going to leave that alone.

There is something funky with how General West interacts with Colonel O'Neil, but I'm not exactly an authoritative source there, so.

whole lot of people I half-recognized, from Richard Kind to Gianin Loffler (dude who dies on the ramp towards the end; the actor had a recurring role on Babylon 5). Would not have guessed that was James Spader, but then my only known exposure to him is in Age of Ultron. Had a John Denver vibe in this.

The people on *checks wiki* "Abydos" should probably have been cast from a more Egyptian pool, but then I'm not sure about the resulting optics.

    Overall I'd say it's a fine movie. B+.

The wildest casting choice in Stargate is making one of your special forces soldiers French Stewart.

    Saw The Lego Movie 2

It was solid and enjoyable but compared to the first movie, which is one of my favorite animated movies, it fell short by a fair bit

The music was good, but I think they went even harder on the constant jokes pace than the first one did, to diminishing results, and the big emotional crux of the movie didn't hit nearly as hard.
I like the message against shitty teenage boy masculinity and being unafraid of embracing silly and "girly" stuff with his sister, but it felt like there was more Real World stuff this time around and they were a lot lighter and jokier for the most part. The stuff between the kid and his dad in the first one was handled with a lot of weight which made it stand out from the rest of the movie and in this it kinda just blended in.

I don't think I could disagree more regarding the meta story
brother being a dick to his kid sister and coming around was way stronger than kid/dad for me, and I thought the way that fed into the film's gender politics was really interesting

Also, this movie had the absolutely brilliant joke of "crank it up to 11 times two" "22!"

    Also also, the credits rap

I know we were talking about that Color Out of Space movie announcement a little bit ago and I think @Straightzi had the idea to shoot it all in black and white except for the color itself

Well there was already a German-language adaptation in 2010 called Die Farbe ("The Color") that did exactly that

I haven't watched it yet but it's free on Prime and I likely will soon

Edit: Amazon has it as The Color Out of Space

I loved Lego movie 2 but Im gonna have to side with Blank. The meta-stuff destroyed me emotionally in the first one and this was just a neat use of the concept.
