I think all those tips and unique mechanics are pretty sweet and add depth.

Except for knife damage being tied to FPS. GTFO of here with that, Capcom, that's stupid.

I doubt it was intentional, but as this point it would be way worse for them to fix it.

Eh, they could just lock the knife to a reasonable damage for each of the hidden difficulty levels and use the ticks purely for detection rather than overall damage (basically just give it flat damage with active frames for hit detection, like any melee weapon in pretty much any modern game). Don't see how that could possibly be bad for the game, provided they don't pick a stupidly low level of damage or something.

I can use infinite samurai edge to go raccoon hunting? It’ll be nice to meander and enjoy the scenery instead of rushing through the game.

There's just not enough of a good reason to fix it. The only benefit is that you fix a bug, at the price of pissing off a lot of speed runners and people using knife strats to go for S ranks, which is basis of replayability for the game.

The only thing that infinite guns lock you out is S+ rank. So you can use the infinite samurai edge to, conceivably, assist with getting the LE-5 on Hardcore, since it only requires an S rank.

My recent S attempt was 4 minutes over. That math does not check out and its pissing me off.
I was at 3:23 with 7 and some change on the self destruct timer. I beat tyrant at 5 : 19 then got right to the exit. I should have made it or at worst been like a minute over.

Traditionally the knife is always on and doesn't take an item slot. They merged it with the defensive item from REmake. Not a choice I really like but eh

I think the knife did take up an item slot in 1 and 2 at least, but couldn’t be used defensively and was infinite by default.

It was also immediately put into the box on 1/2/3 . It being limited is a good trade off for it suddenly being useful.

I might be doing that later. Normal S was easy enough, 2:41.

Guess I'll see how weak lickers are to the knife... considering a tick against them does almost as much damage as a pistol shot, according to the spreadsheet.

So I'm playing RE7 and I'm wondering something. Should I go for a speed run or a madhouse run first? Which is easier to do without the other's unlockable? I did the Not A Hero speed run with little difficulty after an aborted Professional attempt; should I expect something of a similar difficulty?

I’d say complete your speed run, then go to town with the circular saw on Madhouse.

So has anybody looked at some of the unused concept art in the gallery?
Looks like they were toying with the idea of zombies shedding their skin and becoming lickers.

That wasn't so bad. Glad I got the extra inventory slots, though. G3 was a pain, I went through both heals I bought with me and the spray that was lying around, and still finished on Danger (didn't help that I whiffed a couple of grenade throws).
Super-X was easier. A mixture of flamethrower, shotgun and grenades and he went down, and I just needed one heal.

I immediately went on a victory lap for some catharsis:

Honestly, if Rick had gotten one of these, I'd have watched the show for longer.
Got the Frugalist trophy, but it was a close thing at the end (G3 takes multiple rockets, he got me down to Danger so I had to limp out of there).

Now to collect my wits, and take a stab at Claire S+ tomorrow.

I want to know is what's up with the dead scientist in the Plant 43 area who is not a zombie, not mutated, not decomposed in anyway, not injured or bloody. Just a perfectly clean unique npc model laying on the ground. What was he going to be used for I wonder.

This is the route I followed for my hardcore S+.

It doesn’t use any speed running tricks, just notes the most efficient way to go and what pick up/drop/take. They have one for Leon as well.

I'm up to poor Ethan's elbows in ammo thanks to how useful the knife is. It felt like a death sentence in 2.

I usually knifed the zombie right beneath the dumpster you climb up on in the alley in the beginning of the A scenario in 2 to save a few bullets, then stashed it as soon as I hit the police station.

Yeah I know there are people that can do knife only runs, but for us mere mortals if you run out of ammo in the original RE2 than the game is already over.

The knife is pretty amazing in 2. Its only limitation is durability and if you get the infinite knife then even on consoles you have one of the best boss killing weapons in the game. Shoot out a zombies leg, then walk around behind it and knife it to death. There, threat permanently removed. See a future zombie napping? Start knifing its legs and they'll dismember before it can get up or you'll just kill it outright before it can finish getting up.

I've actually been replaying 7 after RE2 as well because I only did one playthrough of it. I started with a speedrun and got the circular saw and well.... that weapon kind of ruins the game.

I don't know why they got rid of head stomping. Feels like incentive to shoot out the legs is, well, shot.

    wVEsyIc.png
  • ViskodViskod Registered User regular
The incentive to shoot out the legs is that it severely limits a zombies mobility and allows you to walk around behind them and finish them off easily without wasting any ammo. Its also more reliable than headshots and headshot stagger.

Should still be able to crush their heads.

Yeah, ground stomps are probably the thing I find myself missing the most from newer games in the series. I get that not allowing us to stomp is what keeps zombies a threat for so long. So from a gameplay/balance perspective it makes sense. It just feels weird not being able to do it.

  • Dark Raven XDark Raven X Laugh hard, run fast, be kindRegistered User regular
I may have hallucinated it by being sleep deprived, but I thought they do still have those kindsa defence animations? I had one where Claire got grabbed, tackled to the ground, chomped, then she punched the zomber, grabbed his head and smashed it into the ground, whereupon it burst.

    Oh brilliant

Well yeah, but having the circular saw means you've played through the game at least 2-3 times already, so it becomes more of a hilarious cathartic device than anything else. I think my favorite bit was easily clearing the circular ramp in the mine with spinny slicey death, then looking around at my leisure.

He basically does if you get the Circular Saw by beating the game under 4 hours. You just aim, hold down attack and whatever you walk into dies. I did the chainsaw fight with Jack, without even picking up the chainsaw, I just held up the circular saw and walked into him. It kept him stunlocked and he never hit me.

It really does feel like I'm playing a different game now that I'm out of the damn house. The first hour or so was the scariest thing I've ever seen in an RE game, if not any game, period.

I like what RE7 did to refresh the series and on Madhouse without using any NG+ items its a very challenging experience. But I can't help but hate the game thematically. The Bakers are stupid and gross and completely uninteresting and that's before you get to their fucked up mutations. Its mostly personal. I tire easily of ignorant backwater hillbilly bullshit in games because I have to deal with those types of people actually being real in my day to day life.

  • LucascraftLucascraft Registered User regular
I've said this before, but I actually didn't like the Baker family residence section very much. It felt too much like Saw with all it's crazy dismemberment and death traps and stuff. It did not feel like a Resident Evil game to me while I was in the house (other than having to collect random keys to access various parts of the house). Gore and torture porn isn't really my thing, and I almost quit RE7 because of the Baker home part. I'm glad I persevered through it because the game really was pretty good the rest of the way through.

Once you get outside it felt way more like a RE game to me. So for me, the part of the game that takes place on the property, in the swamp, mines, boat, and anywhere else were much better to the first section.

While all that is true, that first section felt very fresh, and above all, scary. That part with Mia in the end of the prologue is just constant tension, I was damn near scared to go anywhere.

I think it scared me the first time I played it. Maybe shocked me is the better word because I wasn't expecting it to be so gory. Creeping through the guest house before Mia was scary because I didn't know what was coming, as was going down in the basement. But the whole crazy Mia encounter I though they just tried too hard with and it became repulsive and boring. It also just drags on and on and you can't skip any of it.

That's a big chunk of the game--"Oh, the Bakers are hunting you down in their bizarre bayou estate with hidden walls and horse-shaped keys and shit." Like, easily the majority of it, from what I remember.

I also agree that the first part--before "Welcome to the family," I suppose--is the scary part of the game.

RE7 is the pinnacle of the franchise for me. Back to a relatable setting, back to being fucking terrifying. It was a big swing that gradually revealed itself to still have a great deal of affection for classic RE. I didn't think the moss moops were very good, but the whole thing generally really hit for me.

To me, RE had pretty much been on the downslope since 2. I recognise that the RE4 line of action games was probably great fun, but I didn't care about it and it wasn't what I wanted from the series. RE7 pulled off the amazing feat of getting back to the series roots while also being the freshest and most innovative game in the series. RE2 Remake then showed a complete mastery of the Classic form of RE game.

If the molded were as threatening as the zombies in the RE2 Remake I don't know what the game would even look like, it would probably project an anti-life field that kills weaker players
