Why the fuck are we moralizing license plates in 2019. Who are we protecting?

Generally governments don't like these kinds of plates because they don't want to be seen as endorsing the joke/message.

    By who?
I don't think anyone seriously gives a shit.

I demand a referendum on joke license plates :)

Blocking everything that's even mildly offensive helps the government keep their ability to block the very offensive stuff without constant lawsuits over where the line is drawn.

They let this guy go though then some goose is gonna legally change his name to "Bob WhitePwr" and demand he gets a licence plate too.

Basically, do you think someone should be able to put "Deth2n****rs" on their license plate?

The government has a vested interest in what goes on people's license plates. Whether or not "Assman" qualifies as something you shouldn't be able to have is a matter of where you draw that line but the line very clearly exists.

It'd be a lot easier to shame assholes if they put their asshole-ness out in the open like that :)

Manitoba recently had a news story about revoking a vanity plate that read ASIMIL8.

    https://cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/manitoba-mpi-asimil8-licence-plate-1.4966661

Turns out it was a huge Star Trek (specifically, Borg) fan and not actually a horrible person. The government still cracked down on it, though.

Unfortunately, the world doesn't work like that. We've had an ongoing demonstration of what happens when people are allowed to be racist openly, and what happens is that it normalizes racism.

Drawing a very restrictive line also solidifies that licence plates are not a space for individual expression, they're a way for the government to keep track of cars.

Especially in the US where our free speech laws are so strong, you gotta make that distinction loud and clear.

License plates are already used for self expression and they get revenue from it.

You cant have ASSMAN in Saskatchewan even if its your name but it's cool to have PRSEGOD (it's available, I checked).

So yeah, back to my original comment that this is stupid moralizing by the govt.

Bad News: Man scams friends and family out of nearly a million on fake Super Bowl tickets.

Good News: He gets caught after being shitty to a teenage service worker.
A man who was wanted in a $1 million Super Bowl ticket scam in Georgia has been arrested in California thanks to one quick-thinking teenager.

Ketan Shah, 48, of Lawrenceville, Ga., allegedly collected nearly $1 million in exchange for Super Bowl tickets and VIP treatment that he never delivered on to victims, who include his own mother and other members of his family, according to Atlanta news station WSB-TV. He then skipped town a month before the game.

    ...

David Halliday was working at Pechanga Resort and Casino as a spa concierge on Tuesday when he encountered a difficult and demanding customer.

Halliday told San Diego news station KGTV that Shah demanded service ahead of other guests. “Just from the offset, he seemed a bit different from the usual guests we have in the spa,” Halliday told the outlet.

He was also put off to learn Shah was paying in all cash. And Halliday had a gut feeling that he had seen Shah somewhere before, so he Googled his name, KGTV reported.

Smart Criminals don't have news stories about how they were caught by doing something dumb. Because they aren't dumb, and probably weren't caught. Fortunately for the continued employment of law enforcement everywhere, there's no shortage of dumb criminals.

Kevin McAllister is upping his game, apparently:
These houses can often initially be a hazard due to years of neglect or having been inhabited by squatters, but the last thing one would expect to encounter is a potentially deadly booby trap, just waiting for an unsuspecting visitor.

But that’s just what one real estate investor discovered, when walking through a home in Southwest Philadelphia. Ekrem Uysaler, sales executive for ABC Capital Investments, was doing pre-rehab scope with his crew on a property when they encountered a staircase covered in broken glass and what appeared to be a trip-wire.

After making sure everyone was clear of the stairs, one of the men triggered the would-be booby trap with a board and down came swinging a single crutch with a long knife attached to it.

Thankfully, they caught the trap before someone had tripped it.

Yeah, the people making the show apparently thought that people always refer to the episodes as "The one where X happens" or "The one with whatshisface" or the like anyway, so they might as well be cheeky and name them that way to start.

He asks what difference it makes where in NH he votes for Trump. True, it doesn't matter for that.

But not all elections are state wide. He's voting for local council members or millages or sheriffs in a jurisdiction he's not subject to, while not voting for all the same where he does live.

  • evilmrhenryevilmrhenry Registered User regular
Honestly, these cases just seem like a step or two beyond the problems around voting in college. The question of "where do you actually live, for voting purposes" is more complicated than you might think, and people can have a different opinion on that than voting officials. There's a reason they're not actually pursuing charges against anyone involved.

  • valhalla130valhalla130 13 Dark Shield Perceives the GodsRegistered User regular
They're not pursuing charges because the perpetrators are older and white and Republican.

Bank worker told customer 'vegans should be punched'
A customer who called a bank to apply for a loan was told "all vegans should be punched in the face".

The Bristol woman, who did not want to be named, went to NatWest for a loan to pay for a £400 nutrition diploma.

The application was rejected but after listening to a recording of the call, NatWest offered to pay for the course.

The woman said after the man told her "all vegans should be punched in the face" he explained it was because vegan activists had drawn pictures of animals and written messages such as "friends not food" in chalk on pavements near where he lived.

He felt "vegans were forcing their beliefs on to him", she added.
Who am I allowed to punch in the face for all this pro-Brexit stuff forcing their beliefs on me? (I hope it's Nigel Farage, he's so punchable.)

Nobody remembers the singer. The song remains.
