Never used Target Sport USA before. I’ve used SGAmmo a couple times with good results.

They’ve got a neat item I might grab. It’s a box with 100rds of American Eagle FMJ and 20rd’s of Federal JHP for $50. 4 of those would be a nice way to break in a new gun.

Those are probably the Federal Hydra-Shok’s off the top of my head, the old technology of defensive ammo. Nothing bad about it, but gets left by the wayside now. I’ve got a bunch in .40 that goes bang every time and feeds well.

Google “lucky gunner ammo test” and they have a whole slew of results with different ammos in ballistic gelatin. Worth checking out.

Yeah, they’re Hydra-Shok’s. I think the idea is they feel and perform the same as the FMJ’s in the box to help with training. It’ll probably do just fine as carry ammo for the price.

I will check out that video though. Doesn’t hurt to have a box or two of the really good stuff as well.

Edit- hmm, checking lucky gunner is seems Federal HST are among the better defensive rounds, and it seems for about the same price as 4 of those 100+20 boxes I can get 5 100rd boxes of the American Eagle FMJ and 2 50rd boxes of the HST’s. That is not too shabby at all.

I just bought my first gun! A Yugoslavian clone of the Tokerav.

Uh, what do I need to keep it well? Would a gun sock and a soft case be enough?

For Safety I was going to go with a trigger lock. Idk if I want a safe yet.

That depends greatly on your state and local laws, if any, regarding gun storage, some of which can be quite burdensome.

I would at least go with one of the thousands of handgun vaults-- Gunvault is a good brand, https://www.gunvault.com/-- which will also keep it dry and dust-free. You will need something portable to carry it to and from the shooting range, a soft case should take care of that.

Don’t store firearms in soft or foam cases, they can and will trap moisture hastening the rust that will form on your gats

So what do I store it in long term?

A gun safe. It really shouldn't be a question of whether you want one or not. At least a small pistol one that you can bolt down somewhere. With either a plug-in dehumidifier or those disposable ones you can buy at the local stores. I did make the mistake of storing a gun in it's case long term and it did develop a fine patina of rust. Luckily it was able to be re-coated.

Long term, gun safe is your best bet.

Short term, buy a keyed deadbolt door knob and install it in your closet door. Now your gun is more secured. And not left in a drawer or under your mattress or something.

If you're looking for a cost effective, short term option, you can always get a small pistol vault and mount it to the wall inside of a closet, then install two cut resistant pad locks on the door.

The primary deterrence effect of any security is denial of benefit because burglars are not trying to stay in your house over the weekend to finely comb through your belongings.

Or if you can afford it a steel security cabinet installed inside of a closet in a way that it is impossible to remove and difficult to get leverage on the door with a pry bar.

And then also put a lock on the door.

Yes, I would like it more if my safe were inside a closet but it wouldn’t fit. It is in the bedroom,’I have to my wife’s chagrin. It does match the bedroom set though.

Well, after heming and hawing over it I finally ordered my 1911. I went with a Springfield TRP, black with the rail. It should be waiting for me at my local shop when I get home from my run at the end of the month. Now I’ve got a month to also order a light for it, some magazines, and find a good deal on some .45 ammo. Besides being a range toy this is going to be my ‘truck gun’, ie the gun I keep in a portable safe in my semi so I’ve got something on hand just in case some shit goes down in some of the sketchy places I’m forced to park sometimes.

The light is going to be a Surefire, either an x300 Ultra or maybe an X400 because I’ve never tried a laser before, and it’s already a heavy gun so why not go with a big freaking light? I’ve been looking at a couple different online ammo places for a good deal on some .45 FMJ. Gonna try and get a 1000rd case of something cheap and decent, like maybe American Eagle 230gr, and then a couple hundred rounds of a good JHP like Federal. The mags are going to be the annoying part. I’m used to just buying OEM magazines, but it seems that’s not really a thing with 1911’s. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Wilson Combat and Chip McCormick mags so I’ll order like 2 each and see how they run.

I've run Wilson Combat 47ds in everything from a budget rock island gun up to a Dan Wesson Specialist, across like 5 different guns from commanders to GI models with no issues. Same with CMC mags. Had bad luck with kimber mags, though and good luck with the act mags. Can't go wrong with WC really, never had a gun not run with them in. Plus they seem to run sales on brownells and their site every year where they end up costing like 20 bucks or so a mag. Which seems like a lot but really isn't considering most of my other mags are typically 40+ a pop (I'm looking at you CZ, mec-gar save us please).

Make sure to do some research on safes to get one that isn't easily cracked. there was a pistol safe that Police agencies were recommending that if dropped in a certain way would just pop open. Or ones that are defeatable by big magnets, or number pads that are easily bypassed. Things like that.

    Speaking of safes...

Anybody have any experience with the Steelwater brand? I've been eyeballing one of their safes, but have been a little hesitant dropping $800 (yes, I realize that's kinda silly as I relatively recently spent $750 on a Ruger SR1911).

I’ve been looking around online and decided to order 2 of the WC47 8rd mags and 2 of the 10rd mags to go along with the 2 7rd mags the gun comes a with. I figure that’ll do for a start.

I’m learning though that getting a Glock as your first gun kind of spoils you. You get too used to cheap mags and aftermarket parts for days.

A safe is not really a safe. We call them safes, but unless you’re spending $$$$$ you’re getting a residential security cabinet. RSC’s are not created equal. Like it’s been mentioned in the thread before, your gun safe is not going to be impenetrable, it needs to be good enough to discourage people from spending the time to get into it.

A smash and grab is less than ten minutes. If it’s sturdy enough to withstand brute force attempts (pry bar), and bolted down to the concrete or to the wall studs, you’re probably okay. If for whatever reason you broadcast you’ve got guns all over your car or social media or home, it’s not unreasonable to expect somebody to bring an angle grinder to cut through.

If it’s not bolted down, and you think a few hundred pounds is enough of a deterrent, it only takes a few individuals to flip it and push it out and tackle it at their place.

But, if it’s secured to the frame or foundation, and somewhat discrete, you should be okay for your opportunistic criminals, a dedicated individual with knowledge of your home and access to power tools will still likely be able to defeat most safes given enough time, so home security and denial of that time to access is imperative.

I spent about two months reading up on safes before I bought one and that’s pretty much what stands out to me.

    Agreed.

Locks, safes, etc. are generally just to complete two of the "Ds" of physical security, Deter and Delay. A dedicated attacker who knows what they are doing will be able to defeat any security measures that your normal individual is going to be able to afford to put in place.

I would say look at what you don't have and then look for something on the market which would fill that niche. Or look at something you do have but that has affordable alternatives.

For example, I didn't have an 18" barreled shotgun suitable for defensive use I only had a longer barreled shotgun meant for fowl or other game. And I saw a Mossberg with an 18" barrel for a decent price (I also didn't have any shotgun with me where I'm currently at) so I got it. I have a full size polymer pistol (a gen 1 PPQ) and I have sub compact sized steel frame pistols but I don't have a compact polymer frame pistol for carry. So I'm contemplating getting a Glock 19. I test fired one at the range last weekend and the only thing I didn't like was the OEM trigger (the PPQ factory trigger is on par with after market triggers and I'm used to that). So I'm looking at getting a Glock 19 soon. I also don't have a modern manual bolt gun, so something I'm contemplating is a Ruger American or a Savage in 30-06 or .308.

Also if you don't have a rimfire .22 a good alternative is a CMMG drop in bolt conversion for an AR. I got one last week on sale with three magazines and test fired it yesterday afternoon. Out of almost 500 rounds of .22 lr I only had a handful of FTF or FTE.

I'm not an attorney and this isn't legal advice:

I would be very, very wary of having an aftermarket trigger in a gun intended for defensive use

From my understanding there isn't an issue with aftermarket triggers. But you absolutely want to be careful when it comes to things like custom finishes and parts which say things which could be pointed at as intent, like Punisher logos, phrases like "you're fucked" etc.

When it comes to internals that are otherwise lawful but aren't factory the worry is really reliability. You don't want the Gucci lightened internals (lightened striker, striker spring, recoil spring etc.) shitting the bed when you need them.

Yes, unfortunately agents of the state seem to have more weight given to their perception of danger of lethal force or GBH. I would prefer something similar to Florida's 776 ("Stand Your Ground") which gives more latitude to private citizens to defend themselves or others in public but which outlines exactly what the limits to that are, which our statute does ( for example, when lawful force becomes unlawful).

  • NSDFRandNSDFRand FloridaRegistered User regular
An online dealer had polymer 80 glock frame kits for sale at $100 with free shipping, so I grabbed one of those. I'm kind of on the fence about building it out and just buying a used stock Glock 19 and eventually building out the kit gun or ordering a stripped slide and parts and just starting with a custom pistol first. I'm leaning towards getting a stock 19 first because I actually like how the frame fits my hand, even though I like the aggressive texture and the trigger guard under cut on the polymer 80 frame, because I would like to have an OEM Glock. Something else I've considered is getting a 23 and a 9mm conversion barrel. Since many agencies around the country are switching back from .40SW to 9mm there are plenty of Police trade-in Glock 22s and 23s available. And that gives me two cartridges on one frame and slide.

There's no telling when you'll see them in your local store but I imagine they'll be available online sooner.
