    Charizard is a dragon in the same sense that Magikarp is a koi fish (and Gyarados is the koi fish who turns into a dragon after climbing a waterfall); it's not a description of an elemental affinity, it's a description of physiology not necessarily related to typing

    Within Pokemon itself, as a fictional universe, there are type classifications that reflect elemental affinities, but also taxonomic classifications that detail which ones are able to reproduce with each other. These latter classifications are generally broader, and are referred to as "egg groups"

    Charizard (usually) is a fire/flying elemental type, but it can reproduce with any other species belonging to either the Dragon or Monster egg groups

    no the children always are of the same species as the mother (or father if the mother is a ditto)

    Except for the Nidorans, since they kind of predate the whole breeding thing.

    I'm kind of surprised they never changed that.
