Hey how many people would have to worship Satan to make Satan real, like a whole planet worth or what

At the moment Be'Lakor is probably the closest to a Satan stand in there is.

Although the name is kinda already in use by the Necrontyr.

Satan at least lets you live a full life of sinning before the whole eternal torment part, he’s practically a benevolent figure by 40k standards.

Retiring to the Eye of Terror is not dissimilar to the sentiment that Hell is one big party.

You spend an eternity fighting/rotting/mutating/in pain. Which is a good thing to those who follow the various Chaos Gods.

fakedit-I was curious about the Chaos Undivided Primarchs, as the ones that follow just one of the four have been caught up in the eternal war between the Chaos Gods, but what about the ones who serve all of them?

Lorgar, the religious one, has been meditating for thousands of years.
Alpharius was never that into Chaos and didn't ascend to Demon Prince. Also, maybe dead? Mayyyybe? Same with Konrad.
Perturabo, still planning war against Imperium/fighting other Demon Prince Primarchs.

Why was I making this post? Oh, hell. The Eye of Terror is not great for most, the Demon Primarchs got the best deal there is when it comes to Chaos. Most followers would be in a bad position but at the same time, they probably like it?

Does 40k have oblivion as an option? I remember reading something about all souls, Chaos followers or not, returning to the warp on death. Which, sounds horrifying. But maybe it's more of a Buddhist thing where your spirit returns to its origin similar to a drop returning to the ocean. Not quite oblivion but "you" no longer exist. I think that'd be nice.

IIRC, Big E psyker'd Horus so hard he ceased to exist entirely.
Outside of a similarly powerful psychic attack, I don't think opting for oblivion is a reliable retirement plan.

I will say that Warhammer occult pleasure enthusiasts really veer into the Hellraiser conception of pain-pleasure in that it's almost entirely pain, like barbed wire tentacles ripping your nipples off for ten thousand years and never once like a sensual massage

Look, you know how folks fall down the internet porn hole and eventually veer into really obscure fetishes?

Imagine that, but with every sensation at once for a thousand years.

Barbed wire body-flossing at that point is like a morning cup of joe!

Khorne takes his black and as hot as possible, Nurgle likes lots of flavored creamer, Slaanesh likes a big sweet Starbucks type thing but with like an uncountable amount of espresso shots in it.

    Tzeench drinks tea.

Edit: also Nurgle drinks his coffee from one of those old ass Mr. Coffee dual-pot machines you see in the lobby of every tiny mechanic or tow-yard, the kind that has had coffee brewing in it since it was plugged in and hasn't stopped.

The thing is, it seems that Slaanesh isn't about pleasure so much as about sensation. They start with pleasure, they advertise the pleasure, but that because it's a lot easier to talk people into "Hey, wanna do some drugs then hit up an orgy?" than it is to convince a newbie to follow you to nipple removal and barbed wire colostomy night at the cult hangout.
Eventually, it seems the pleasure gets burnt out and only the desire for greater sensation remains which gradually turns to the sado masochism and the like.

I kind of really, really like the idea of Chaos just sorta settling down for a minute for a cup and a chat. The Warp just kinda stops being all warpy for about thirty minutes, Khorne is kicked back in a little beat up wooden chair in a retail break room, one leg up over the other, foot bouncing as he chews the cud with ol Papa Nurgle.

Coffee shop AUs really are the best, damn

There's gotta be some non-Chaos part of the warp where things hang out. I can't imagine, like, Gork and Mork are constantly battling against or being tortured by Chaos.

Gork and Mork are gods in their own right though, presumably they hold sway over a portion of the warp that the Chaos gods avoid.
But, if anyone's getting off on the idea of an eternity of fighting Chaos gods, Gork and Mork are at the front of that crew.

Edit: Except Khorne, he comes over, drinks all their beer then starts a fight.

As far as I remember most human soul just flicker a bit and the become part of the warp. Only souls of people with psychic powers can linger in the warp after death. That is why eldar used to be able to reincarnate and now hide in the eternal twilight of their spirit stones and psychic networks of their craftworlds. Staying sentient in the warp after death means getting ripped apart by daemons and getting swallowed by slaanesh.

One of the heresy novels has Magnus describing how the Emperor forged his soul at the same time as his body, and he was able to psychically commune with the Emperor before he was even born, and that all the primarchs were made that way, with their bodies and souls in perfect harmony.

So, basically, they were daemon princes of themselves right from the start; Magnus, for instance, could change his appearance at will, including size, and phase in and out of reality even before his ‘ascension.’

To be honest I’m slightly surprised Corax is the only one…

I have developed a mild interest in 40k lore from my exposure to it through video games and such and while I doubt I'll acquire any tabletop hardware I would like to understand the different factions and history better. I've looked at some online wikis and found them a bit disorienting. Can some of you recommend a book or other source for me to do my toes into the grimdark future?

the ciaphas cain novels are about a very clever coward who bumbles his way into being HERO OF THE IMPERIUM constantly

Do you have any particular faction or force you want to know more about? Most of the books are from the Imperial POV, mostly Space Marines and Guard, though the other forces have some books too. But if you have a specific alien race or force that can help to narrow things down.

I see that Cain was already mentioned, consider this a second vote for that.
Alternatively, the The Tanith First and Only is a good place to start if you like the Imperial Guard.

If you're feeling more Chaosy, the there's a Word Bearers trilogy that's pretty entertaining. I think it started stronger than it finished, but your mileage may vary.

Oh dear… unfortunately you’re looking at forty years of written work with basically zero central oversight of what is ‘canon’ so that will be difficult…

Personally I still reckon the second edition (1993) Codex Imperialis, that was one of the three books in the boxed starter set, is probably the best intro, even if some of it is a little out of date. Stupidly hard to get ahold of these days too…

Honestly you can’t go too far wrong with Warhammer40000.com, especially the timeline.

I think it would be pretty fair to say that Cain is as much, if not more, afraid of being found out as he is of death, which is a nice tension in the better stories featuring him.

The best part of Cain is that the administratum is so tired of declaring him dead and then alive that he is no longer allowed to be declared dead. Cain is the immortal HERO OF THE IMPERIUM and all shall fear his name.

    My gateway to 40k:

The games: Dawn of War 1, Dawn of War 2, Space Marine (a decent look at pre-return Ultramarines), and more recently Space Hulk and Battlefleet Gothic Armada: 2.
For 40k books, the Cain books, anything by Dan Abnett.

Also 1D4Chan which although it has NSFW pages (for serious), it DOES do a good job of pointing out a lot of fan-favorite stories and material that you just won't get reading the official wiki. Read a few articles and see if you like it.

Bruva Alfabusa's NSFW due to language If The Emperor Had a Text to Speech Device. It's a fanfiction of 40K whose premise is that the Emperor has recently gotten hooked up to a text-to-speech device, and must be caught up with the state of the Imperium while he was out bustin' demons for the last ten millenia. Needless to say, he's not very happy with what he hears.

As for its canonicity? Everything related to the Emperor by the Captain-General is canon, but everything that is physically depicted in the videos is just an interpretation.

Also, this was made before GW moved the plot forward and made a few things "clearer" regarding the Emperor's character, so don't be surprised if you actually like this version of the Emperor.
