[Xbox/XBL] Battlefront II SP Sucked (but Gavankar was great): A Retrospective

Hey, I used to play that!

It's another Xbox, console hardware and Xbox Live thread! Here we talk about absurd Game Pass discounts, Play Anywhere titles, backwards compatibility, cross-platform play, Terry Crews, the dreamy lads at Digital Foundry, and what games we loved from the turn of the century! Wow!

Games with Gold

As always, for those with the paid XBL membership "Xbox Live Gold", four free titles are made available for download for limited timed--two on Xbox One (which require continued membership) and two on Xbox 360 (which are yours in perpetuity). Additionally, all Xbox 360 titles are among the backwards compatible (more on that below).

Xbox Game Pass

Like the Xbox-only service EA Access, Xbox Game Pass is Microsoft's own subscription gaming catalog service ("Netflix for video games") with over a hundred periodically rotating titles, making it attractive for digital only libraries and people who want to try first party new exclusives (which will make the rounds on the service at the time of their launch). There is no limit on how many games you can download and install from it, and access is for as long as the subscription holds--permanent purchases made from the catalog are discounted 20%, and DLC by 10% It does not require Xbox Live Gold (though you would need that for multiplayer access). Game Pass also extends to Xbox Play Anywhere games on Windows 10, just look for the separate download and purchase buttons on the Microsoft Store app.

Xbox One Backwards Compatibility with the Xbox

It's not just for the Xbox 360 anymore! In addition to more than four hundred Xbox 360 titles, more than thirty 'Original Xbox' titles are now playable on the Xbox One (both 'base' and 'X' variations), with some visual upgrades (such as resolution bumps to 1080p and beyond, not capable on the original console, and improved framerate). Most recent additions include a truckload of classic Star Wars titles, including both original Battlefront titles (the non-microtransaction ones), Republic Commando and KOTOR II. They work the same way as Xbox 360 titles and do not have additional achievements, and can be purchased from the Xbox website or played from a physical disc (break out your old libraries!). Want a list without the box art? There's one!

The Next Xbox Console/"Project Scarlett"

What is it? What are they? Details are still scarce, but signs point to proximal launches of two consoles to replace the current Xbox One consoles: a less expensive, lower-powered system that will be similar in performance to the current Xbox One X, and a more expensive, higher-powered system that will be the Xbox One X's performance successor. Whenever more details come, be sure I'll be adding them! In the meantime, Microsoft has consistently promised continuity with existing Xbox One libraries, possibly to extend to Xbox 360 and original Xbox libraries. Forwards compatibility between Xbox One and the next machines? They're not ruling that out either!

Oh damn, I had totally forgotten about Arcade Squad until I read the OP, and I made the bloody thing!

I got stuck between a chair and a wall in Metro Exodus and the game auto saved before I could load the last checkpoint. The last manual save is two hours old.

    Guess I'm done!

Yeah, ironically I am not doing this from home (though I did get off my shitty work), so I ended up updating the OP a few times to actually be worth people's time.

Yeah Metro Exodus has an absolutely awful save system. And on the highest difficulty quick saving is disabled entirely. So you are at the mercy of check point saves. One streamer had to save another streamer by copying a good save to fix his fucked one. If you're on console you're just flat out fucked.

I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.

It's only a seven-year-old fighter at this point (I had to check and double check spelling before I continued typing), but I played through the DOA5LR story mode a couple days ago in preparation for DOA6. I'd played it before but couldn't remember anything other than there being yet another Kasumi clone hanging around, and I didn't realize it had a bunch of Ninja Gaiden references in it so that was neat.
Also Hitomi totally should have won the tournament.

Other takeaways: I think the AI for story mode is hard coded to counter every attempt at a throw, and I hate both playing as and playing against Brad Wong with a fiery passion.

    From last thread:
I should play Ori while I have discounted Gamepass. It looks really pretty and I understand they patched it to be a little easier.

Definitely. I love Ori, and think he should be the Xbox mascot.

Hadn't heard about the patch, though.

Ori would make a good mascot...if we were still in the age of console mascots. It's a shame Ori and the Blind Forest wasn't around in the original Xbox's life cycle, when the console was looking for a mascot (and tried various things, most of which are long forgotten). The Master Chief basically became the unofficial mascot, but by then, I personally think the console mascot era came to an end. Crash was obviously the Playstation 1's mascot, but I don't think people were saying "Oh yeah, he's Playstation's mascot" the same way by the PS3's long life cycle. Mario is more of an exceptional case, but that's reflecting Nintendo's unique formula of retelling existing stories in new games (the Zelda effect)--plus, he's Mario, a juggernaut of the industry.

Ori definitely belongs in a sort of "pantheon" of Xbox heroes and heroines, protagonists, or whatever you'd call them--along with the Master Chief, Cortana, the Arbiter, multiple "gears" from Gears of War, Cuphead and Mugman, Sam Fisher, and the survivor from Sunset Overdrive (just because that's such an excellent game). Maybe Ryu Hayabusa too, as his most famous modern incarnations are still very closely associated with Xbox, but as discussed in the last thread, Team Ninja basically killed Ninja Gaiden as a franchise very shortly after it went multiplatform, so maybe not anymore. It's hard to say if Ori is more deserving than all of those.

Basically, these are the characters I'd "draft" if Microsoft suddenly decided Xbox needed its own version of Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale (probably don't call it that). Of course, considering how well that worked on Playstation--and how much stronger its historical line-up is then Xbox's--it'd probably be at least as big a mistake.

Heh, I guess Microsoft could do what Sony did, and try and get a few characters who are barely associated with Xbox but technically on it. Noctis, 2B, Senua, Dante or Virgil from Devil May Cry. And a Big Daddy, why not?

1 and 2 were good, 3 was made by some other studio and was terrible, IIRC. Colonies was the online only MP game I think.

edit: Colonies was the gold version of LP1, with extra maps and modes.

Pay KT some money to make an Xbox Warriors game like Warriors All-Stars and my $60 is theirs. Go all in on long-forgotten Xbox games. I'm talking Blinx the Time Sweeper, the lizard guy from Brute Force, someone from Armed and Dangerous, just go through all of the C- and D- listers, mash them up with a paper thin story about mixing dimensions or something and put it on a disc.

Is there a Rare team working on something else besides Sea of Thieves and avatars? Surely they must be. And now that Microsoft's desire for "games as a service" seems to be dying down, maybe that means they'll finally let Rare be Rare?

Lost Planet going BC is awesome.

Lost Planet 2 having global leaderboards that never reset and are nigh impossible to crack for but being tied to several titles, accolades and achievements? lol.

    LP 3 was fun too.

Colonies is just fancy Lost Planet 1.
