I was playing Bette Davis Eyes as a clue for something for my trivia players tonight, and there was just a tinge of sadness listening to it and remembering The Final Girls.

Right then, saw Alita, with about a half-litre more wine in me than intended, since i screwed up the movie times...again.

And, i liked it in the main. Ended up at a 3d showing (well, there wasn't a non-3d available), and for once it actually worked for me. i loved the scenery-porn aspect of the movie, and could have happily watched had the whole thing been slightly-goofy new-born(-ish) Alita exploring this world she's ended up in. Actually...that was a minor negative, though. i mean, in the comic there's almost nothing (that i can remember; i seem to have sold off mine at some point) redeeming about the Scrapyard, so it makes sense people would do just about anything to get out. The movie version, i dunno, seemed kind of a cool (if lawless, natch) place to live.

Sure the story was kind of goofy, and the dialogue could be pretty hokey, but i got to the end of it and...i wanted to see more? Like, it was like my brain hadn't even clocked it at 2hrs. If they'd crammed in another arc, i probably wouldn't have noticed.

One thing kind of put me off, if just a bit (also, if i screw up the spoiler block, sorry. i don't use them much)
So at the end Alita just straight up murderizes Vector. Like, i know he's got it coming to him, and she's got every reason to want to see him a stain on the floor, but...like he's not even armed and/or aggressive. Hell, he's still being meat-jacked at that point. The thing just kind of sat wrong with me?

Oh, minor detail, but Zapan's got the cross of confusion branded/scarred on his forehead, just like in the comic. That's a nice bit of attention to detail.

Hey, since I really enjoyed Happy Death Day I’m in the mood for more stuff kinda in that vein. Anyone got any recommendations?

This may be too obvious a suggestion

But have you seen Final Destination?

A more obvious suggestion would be Happy Death Day 2U, presumably

I heard really good things about The Souvenir from Sundance, and now A24 is releasing it, which is always promising. It stars Tilda Swindon, her daughter Honor Swinton Byrne, and I dunno, some other people. It looks absolutely lovely.

    https://youtu.be/t9Al2nC0vzY

Ahhhh that music is excellent! That *looks* lovely.

I really just need to track down every A24 release and watch them all.

I mean, last year they had First Reformed, Hereditary and Eighth Grade. This year the three movies I heard the most hype about in Sundance were The Souvenir, The Farewell, and The Last Black Man in Sam Francisco. A24 is releasing them all this summer. Of course not everything they release is great, but their record is bananas and they don’t seem to be slowing down.

Polar has some really dumb scenes for no reason. Like, the woman beater? He rents a room to a woman-hater for ko reason? And the the gratuitously violent fat man kill scene? It makes no fucking sense, isn't funny in any way and makes the rest of the movie worse with its inclusion. It could've been a fine movie but it's terrible.

I'm sorry, I really wanted to like it but it felt like the director was trying to be "edgy" with tits and gore. I liked almost every scene mads was in but everything else was rough.

We watched Anna and the Apocalypse last night, you know, that Scottish zombie Christmas musical?

It was delightful. It's very much Shaun of the Dead mixed with the Buffy musical and I wound up being charmed by it.

I just thought it was disgusting. I've never played a Dead Island game and didn't plan to, but that figurine just represented everything about gaming culture that turns my stomach.

Oh shit, the couple in the flat below me must be rehearsing for a movie. This explains everything.
