ADHD Resources

Would anyone here recommend resources related to ADHD? Things like how to deal with kids who have it, things they can do to help themselves in school or while doing homework, etc.

Thanks!

    How To ADHD

She's so much fun, and while I was already diagnosed when I found her channel, I think that until I watched some of her videos I never realized how severe it actually is. Hers is quite severe, and aside from being generally more cheerful than I am, it's like she's talking about me. Watching one of her videos is crazy-easy for me to follow, I wish she taught my math classes in college.

And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn

I always found the lectures from Dr. Russel Barkley insightful for understanding my own ADHD. Here's one specifically covering some of the things he thinks parents should know.

These videos are amazing. Thank you.

    it's hard.

our kid has it among other things. The diagnosis should get him classified to get an IEP. That gets accommodations which means less behavior issues. You might have to fight for that IEP but it is worth it. We have an amazing team at my kid's school. We just had his meeting, and one of his accommodations is basically he only has to do an hour of homework, after that its not happening.

big thing to keep in mind that many of the things your kid will do are beyond their control. If you want to send me a dm, you can, I am more than happy to share experiences. Also be prepared for other things like anxiety to show up.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I just watched "How to ADHD" and now I'm feeling like a total asshole for how I've been dealing with my 14 year old son. The lack of real information that is general knowledge is astounding. I will be spending a good portion of today watching that channel's videos and then talking with my son when he gets home from school.

p.s. I've not been name calling or being derogatory towards my son, just having hard times understanding why he can do his homework, but can't turn it in? Stuff like that.

There are a lot of misconceptions, especially surrounding ADHD and gender. I probably should have been diagnosed as an adolescent rather than 4 years ago. :P Sometimes I wonder what I could have done with my life if that had been the case, what would have been different and what I could have accomplished. Not worth spending too much time on I guess.

There is a video in which she talks about trying to learn to play the ukulele. She could be talking about every attempt I've ever made at anything my entire life and the thought process involved. Again the kind of thing that, if it had been addressed when I was younger I would know how to play 8 different instruments right now.

My nephew has ADHD, so one resource I've watched, but not enough of, is TotallyADD

I don't know how it compares to How to ADHD, as I didn't even know that existed until this thread! However, despite only stating ADD in the title, there are a ton of videos about ADHD as well.

Holy shit those How to ADHD videos are like immediately good. Little too heavy for me to dig in on right now cause she's getting a little to close to home on shit and that's gonna fuck me up the whole day if I let it, but from the first couple of vids I was watching this series looks real good. I've been diagnosed for like 28 years, and I literally just learned some new stuff while I was watching. Emotional deregulation is totally new to me conceptually, but like totally makes sense for physiological reasons and explains a whole shit load of stuff immediately. So that was a fun video to watch...

I sent my mom some videos from the channel about a year ago just so she could see how I tend to think. She said it makes so much sense for me, and then gave me the "hmm maybe I have ADD, sometimes I get lost in thought." No mom. No you don't.

Also "is this because of your ADHD?" Oh my god mom I'm 35.

Just got done going to his school and getting the IEP ball rolling. Already dropping PE for a grade recovery class that may help him not repeat 8th grade.

They are pushing for the 504 program over IEP as they say it’s faster to get started. We’re in the last quarter and I need whatever they can do sooner than later.

Thanks again for opening my eyes.

    yea fight for the IEP

504 are not nearly as helpful as IEP. it is infinitely harder to get the IEP if you settle for the 504. Its basically them not wanting to have to give services.

Thanks everyone for the responses. The videos are great, and I'll definitely follow up in this thread as more unfolds. If there are things you'd like to share with me that you don't want to post here, please feel free to send me a PM at any time.

For some background, my nephew was recently diagnosed (he's 8), and it's heartbreaking to see how he struggles. While doing homework, he will sit there and cry because he's so frustrated. For some reason my sister doesn't seem to be taking it seriously, and I'm trying to figure out a way to get her to get him the help he needs. A few things:

    (1) He was diagnosed by his pediatrician - while I don't doubt his doctor's competence I think part of the issue is that his mother doesn't trust (or want to trust) the diagnosis. She has thought of getting a second opinion, and I've supported her in going to a specialist to follow up (hell, it might be something else that isn't ADHD, or a combination of things), but I'm not sure she'll actually follow through.

    (2) I'm thinking of taking some time each week to help him with things like homework. Does anyone know of any resources beyond the treasure trove of what has already been provided that might be helpful there? Things like lesson plans, specific techniques he or I can use, etc. (If there is already stuff like that in the earlier links, I'll get to them over the weekend.)

    Thanks, all!

How To ADHD does have a video on misdiagnosis, as in things that can actually be dismissed as ADHD that are not ADHD, and vice versa. A misdiagnosis can have effects ranging from "no change" to "actively detrimental," so it does pay to make sure diagnosis is thorough. There is also a lot of comorbidity, which means that ADHD can mask other problems, and vice versa.

You will need a psychologist to officially get the diagnosis I think. At least iep/sped thinking. Without that, you probably won't get a classification (assuming that is your goal)

So I wanted to add that last night we showed our adhd kiddo the video linked above and threw a switch in him. Was asking a ton of awesome questions and seemed like it helped explain some things for him. So yea approval on that video
